@rckins
“i’ve been talking to the crew. . .seems like most of them are pretty brain dead. tlaloc surrounded himself with zombies as called it freedom.”
@corinnv
she places a hand on the young woman’s shoulder, “as we redbloods rebuild and reform and try to move on from this. . .we’ll need more people. you’re welcome to stay with us if you like.”
captainlvna:
“ you and i both, pal, you and i both, ” an understanding nod comes from him. juan knows what it’s like to live desperately, he knows what it is to starve and he knows that it takes a lot of grace to remain kind while living in such circumstances. he doesn’t blame them, he really can’t bring himself to try even though they held kitra captive. he knows that he would’ve done the same if it were him in that position. “ but hey, no hard feelings, alright ? believe it or not, i look up to you guys for persevering. sometimes you gotta do things that are hard to swallow as a leader, and she’s doing just that, ” juan wants to reach out and pat the man’s shoulder like he always does, but he refrains from it. “ sounds like you guys know leti, though ? ”
elos chuckles, glad to have found someone that wasn’t so tightly wound. everyone in the universe seemed so tense these days, and rightly so. but the constant gunfire, lying, and yelling was getting tiring. sometimes elos just wished he could sit down at a bar and get along with someone without having to worry about picking sides, “ i don’t agree with her all the time but she’s kept us a live for this long and that’s a to more than i could do,” she admitted, and then sighed, “ yeah we know leti, she used to be one of us. that’s pretty common actually. except most the time when one of our own comes back from the alliance they don’t bother to talk - they just start shooting.”

There’s something unsettling about boarding the Alliance ship. Pax has heard stories, whispers. Gossip travels fast through the medical community, but Pax had never really taken the time to stop and care much about it. He’d never thought he’d get this close. He’d never thought their paths would cross. And why had the ship requested their presence in the first place?
Crushing the coldness in his stomach down, Pax takes his first step onto the vessel.
Gemini crosses the halls of the grand alliance ‘medship’ following the same path that she does every day. It is routine by now and she no longer needs to cling to the arms of a guide to remember her way. As she walks, fast but still unsure, she catches the eye of a passerby who looks even more uncertain than her. she takes a moment to look at him, but cannot get her eyes to focus and feel as if she is looking through him.
She can feel her brain working to connect dots, but every attempt is a near miss. So she decides to ignore it and keep walking.
rckins:
“uh, no. i’m totally good the way i am, thanks. i think the scrap adds to my charm.”
tlaloc shrugs, “suit yourself. but in this day and age you might be denied a good job for looking so . . . thrown together. but i suppose you aren’t looking for the easy, well paying jobs.”
corinnv:
god she wanted to remember anything. something small. the way her mother looked. or maybe her dad’s laughter. even if this man wasn’t who he said he was she still wanted something. back at the hospital, she spent so many days just trying to force herself to remember something. but there was always that block that stopped her. but that day saving kitra from that ledge something flashed into her mind. she had just written it off to be a delusion but maybe it was something. “there was water, rushing water. i pulled a boy out of the water.” she said closing her eyes to try and see the scene again. it was small and fragmented but there it was. a memory? or just a daydream.
“cy…” the small nickname rolled off her tongue without her even realizing. looking up at her brother she studied his face more. did he look like his dad? or maybe their mom. his mom. she didn’t know. she wanted to know.
“i don’t know if i am who you think i am. there is a lot i don’t know i’m learning. lies that have been told. i don’t know what to believe. but….what happened to your sister? to me…to…what did the alliance do?”
“you grew up here,” he said, “could scale the canyons like nothing we’d ever seen. it was like you were made to scurry up the crumbling rocks. i could never catch you.”
he nodded, a flickering smile passing across his features, “yes, you saved someone. a kid. his family was so so thankful and mom and dad had no idea how to reward you or even what to do with you. technically you weren’t supposed to be out there on your own but if you hadn’t defied them . . .”
at the sound of her calling him ‘cy’ he felt the tears well up again. it wasn’t much but it was familiar, not so cold and quivering in fear. nicknames, even ones so simple, made him feel like maybe she sensed it too: she was home.
“you were supposed to go to the city, but you never made it there,” he sighed, “one day we were saying goodbye, promising to stay in touch, swearing we’d win the war, and then we never heard from you again. it was like you disappeared. but there was no body, so we knew they’d taken you. but honestly, part of me hoped you’d died instead. the rumors we heard about what they do . . .”
@paxrinne
“paxton rinne,” he chuckles, a warm smile on his weathered face, “i’ve heard your name in the medical community.seems like your quite an asset. once this debacle is terminated i’d love to have you on my team.”
@rckins
“well, aren’t you a scrappy looking little thing. i could fix you up real nice, for free, would you like that?”
@captainlvna
standing at the cargo dock of the ship with his hands on his hips, tlaloc looks out over the desolate landscape with an expression that maintains a perfect balance between disgust at every moving creature around him and his own self-satisfied pride. as the little rover appears on the horizon, his smile creeps wider. when he called, people came, and that power meant the world to him.
when the rover stopped at the base of the ship tlaloc waved down at the crew, and offered a welcoming smile, “welcome, we’re glad you got our message. juan, it’s good to see you. i always knew you’d end up somewhere like this. i need to speak to you alone, for just a moment and then i can meet your rag-tag team of misfits.”
corinnv:
your brother.
no that couldn’t be possible. it couldn’t be possible at all. she had no siblings. just her parents killed in the same crash that took her leg and memory. no brother on the record. the alliance had told her.
why wouldn’t she believe them? it’s what she’d always been told. what she always believed. but was it true? she never questioned it before
she took her head. “no…no…” cori braced her head back against the wall, letting herself sink down. the world was spinning.
“i’ve never been to this planet before… i don’t remember this. i don’t remember any of this. i would remember something like this. i….”
how did he know her name then? there would be no way for him to know she was coming here. no way for someone to get her name. but maybe there was.
blinking back tears she frantically looked around. her breathing hitching as she looked for something, anything she might remember. this man, her supossed brother. “i would remember a brother…i couldn’t forget something like that. how does someone forget something like that. maybe you think im someone else? maybe i look like someone else.”
when cori had been taken away from him cyprian thought that was the end. that he was declared a terrible brother and he could never reclaim the title. if he’s lost her how could he be trusted with a family ever again? so he’d closed himself off to all possibilities of connection, no one left to truly care about and no one to forget if the alliance ever got to him.
but here she was, broken and with pieces missing, but still his sister or some distorted version of her. part of him wanted to hug her - to hold her close and not risk letting go. and part of him wanted to run away, the feeling of being chased by the ghost of his failure forever at his heels.
“corinna,” he said softly, ‘”i know that you don’t remember, that you can’t. I know they took that from you and you won’t be able to get those memories back. nor, do i think, you’ll ever be able to trust me just on that basis of my words. but if you can look back on your life and say that there’s nothing off - no spaces that feel empty, that’s fine. but if you can’t and you want some help filling them in: i’ll be here.”
corinnv:
dark eyes grew wide as she felt him grab her shoulders. she could run or yell for help. she could scream. but she felt stuck frozen as he talked. “mom? dad? i….i lost my parents years ago. they were killed. i’m sorry i…” she didn’t know what to say. she didn’t know why but the more he talked the sadder she got. the more that spark flickered in her head. “of course i feel empty! anyone wouldif they lost what i did” cori snapped back. “but it was an accident that took them away not the alliance.” even as she spoke the power in her voice seemed to fade. “who are you? your name….i cant get it out of my head.”
“i know exactly what happened to you parents! to our parents! i’m your brother corinna!” he exclaimed, practically yelling at her. he didn’t mean to be aggressive, but the rage was building up in his chest like a storm making him churn with a bitter illness. but then he stopped, drew a breath and gained his composure, “you used to be here. fighting with us. then the alliance captured you and i thought you died.”
corinnv:
cypriah. the name that hadnt left her mind since the moment she heard it. she had probably said it over and over again hundreds of times. there was something about it but she didn’t know what. still hearing the name it felt like a tiny spark flickered in the back of her mind of a second. small but it was there. she felt it. and now standing here she didn’t know what to feel. “they?” she asked. “i don’t think anyone has taken from me…i dont think so. only given, at least lately.”
he shook her shoulders, “is there really nothing left of your memories? mom? dad? i knew the alliance cut up peoples brains and took out the stuff that made them human but i didn’t think it was like this,” he rambled, the horror and disgust curling in his lips. “you are nothing of what you were. don’t you feel empty?”
@captainlvna
“she didn’t used to be so mean. not until we started getting desperate. granted we’ve been desperate for years now. i’m just glad she didn’t shoot ya.”
@corinnv
“how much did they take form you?”
@sparrow-zero-three
“that girl, the one with the robotic leg. . . you’re her friend, right?”

Pax feels more at ease on the base than he does on the spaceship.
He’s never really felt like part of the military hierarchy—the medics tended to be in a class of their own—but he’s accustomed to the system, so being on A9 isn’t quite nice but it’s certainly familiar.
His eyes slide off one officer after another, obviously unconcerned by the heavy military presence they run into as soon as they’re off the ship. He shoots Leo a grin. “It’s not Hybrov, that’s for sure,” he says and for a moment he allows himself to picture sand beaches instead of grey metal and flat lighting.
He opens his mouth to quip again, but he’s cut short by the sudden approach of an officer. A piece inside of him whispers that this is odd, but he decides to give them the benefit of the doubt and smiles politely. “Can I help you, officer?”
there is something rigid in the way A9 is, as if the base is not teeming with living, breathing things, but mechanical and methodic, like a well oiled machine. in a way, leo isn’t entirely unaccustomed to it –– his years with the alliance exposing him to a lifestyle of a similar nature, after qualas –– but there is still a tinge of unease thread through the lines of soldiers’ shoulders as they pass him by. unnaturally blue eyes flicker and flit from man to man as they pass, his visual interface picking up small details here and there ; shed hair on shoulders, residue from that morning’s meal speckled on a cuff of a sleeve.
his gaze is intent and curious, even as he listens to the doctor, before leo’s eyes move back and catch on pax’s smile and, momentarily, he forgets to breathe ; the soft blue circular LED light at his temple flickering, processing, before he’s blinking ( metaphorically –– and physically –– shaking himself out of it ). ❛ no, doctor, ❜ he says, a furrow dipping his brow at what seems to be an obvious observation. ❛ it is A9. ❜ but he pays no mind to the officer approaching them until pax does, steps slowing at the doctor’s side, eyes unblinking, intrigued.
Arvel was not what people would call ‘a man of the law’ he did not read or execute the letter of it. Instead, he preferred to pick and choose when it was convenient to him. More than it was about executing justice, it was about exploiting the power given to him and inflicting it upon anyone who gave him the opportunity.
“I need you see identification from both of you,” he demands quickly, hand held out and eyes prompting. “We now better than to keep many of his type around here so I know you two are visitors.” At the words ‘his type’ Arvel nods in the direction of the synth, a small grimace forming on his features.
