The Importance of Mary Sue

When I was in Ninth Grade, I won a thing.  

That thing, in particular, was a thirty dollar Barnes & Noble gift certificate.  I was still too young for a part-time job, so I didn’t have this kind of spending cash on me, ever.  I felt like a god.

Drunk with power, I fancy-stepped my way to my local B&N.  I was ready to choose new books based solely on the most important of qualities…BADASS COVER ART.  I walked away with a handful of paperbacks, most of which were horrible (I’m looking at you, Man-Kzin Wars III) or simply forgettable.  

One book did not disappoint.  I fell down the rabbit hole into a series that proved to be as badass as the cover art promised (Again, Man-Kzin Wars III, way to drop the ball on that one).  With more than a dozen books in the series, I devoured them.  I bought cassette tapes of ballads sung by bards in the stories.  And the characters.  Oh, the characters.  I loved them.  Gryphons, mages, but most importantly, lots of women.  Different kinds of women.  So many amazing women.  I looked up to them, wrote bad fiction that lifted entire portions of dialogue and character descriptions, dreamed of writing something that the author would include in an anthology.

This year I decided in a fit of nostalgia to revisit the books I loved so damn much.  I wanted to reconnect with my old friends…

…and I found myself facing Mary Sues.  Lots of them.  Perfect, perfect, perfect.  A fantasy world full of Anakin Skywalkers and Nancy Drews and Wesley Crushers.  I felt crushed.  I had remembered such complex, deep characters and didn’t see those women in front of me at all anymore.  Where were those strong women who kept me safe through the worst four years of my life?

Which led me to an important realization as I soldiered on through book after book.  That’s why I needed them.  Because they were Mary Sues.  These books were not written to draw my attention to all the ugly bumps and whiskers of the real world.  They were somewhere to hide.  I was painfully aware that I was being judged by my peers and adults and found lacking.  I was a fuckup.  And sometimes a fuckup needs to feel like a Mary Sue.  As an adult, these characters felt a little thin because they lacked the real world knowledge I, as an adult, had learned and earned.  But that’s the thing…these books weren’t FOR this current version of myself.   Who I am now doesn’t need a flawless hero because I’m comfortable with the idea that valuable people are also flawed.

There is a reason that most fanfiction authors, specifically girls, start with a Mary Sue.  It’s because girls are taught that they are never enough.  You can’t be too loud, too quiet, too smart, too stupid.  You can’t ask too many questions or know too many answers.  No one is flocking to you for advice.  Then something wonderful happens.  The girl who was told she’s stupid finds out that she can be a better wizard than Albus Dumbledore.  And that is something very important.  Terrible at sports?  You’re a warrior who does backflips and Legolas thinks you’re THE BEST.   No friends?  You get a standing ovation from Han Solo and the entire Rebel Alliance when you crash-land safely on Hoth after blowing up the Super Double Death Star.  It’s all about you.  Everyone in your favorite universe is TOTALLY ALL ABOUT YOU.

I started writing fanfiction the way most girls did, by re-inventing themselves.  

Mary Sues exist because children who are told they’re nothing want to be everything.  

As a girl, being “selfish” was the worst thing you could be.  Now you live in Narnia and Prince Caspian just proposed marriage to you.  Why?  Your SELF is what saved everyone from that sea serpent.  Plus your hair looks totally great braided like that.

In time, hopefully, these hardworking fanfiction authors realize that it’s okay to be somewhere in the middle and their characters adjust to respond to that.  As people grow and learn, characters grow and learn.  Turns out your Elven Mage is more interesting if he isn’t also the best swordsman in the kingdom.  Not everyone needs to be hopelessly in love with your Queen for her to be a great ruler.  There are all kinds of ways for people to start owning who they are, and embracing the things that make them so beautifully weird and complicated.

Personally, though, I think it’s a lot more fun learning how to trust yourself and others if you all happen to be riding dragons.

okay this is from my au where the 3 of these kids realize Konoha is corrupt a lot sooner. Naruto and Sakura also communicate with Sasuke better and are able to provide a better support system, thus stopping him from being manipulated into leaving the village with Orochimaru. The three of them run away from Konoha and train on their own and travel, meeting and learning from all sorts of new people. They become the next new 3 legendary sanin ame trio style and overthrow the corrupt system

Why does everyone hate Boruto? Boruto is not that bad people just want give him the chance

I have deliberately avoided answering Boruto questions on this blog any longer due to the fact it gets me heated. 

However despite this, I still am sent questions regarding this shithole series and people are still curious about what I think of it now, 40 something episodes in. To the person who sends me continuous information on the series: I don’t care and never have. Please stop. To everyone else: I haven’t always been entirely honest about how I really feel about Boruto, sarcasm aside.

So here you go.

Warning: This answer is not pointed towards you individually (anonymous). Please don’t take everything I’m about to say personal or as a direct attack on you. 

Naruto might’ve “ended” fifteen years ago, and people who are still angry have every god given right to be.Because when you “end” a story in a mediocre, anti climatic, unsatisfactory bullshit way, it’s going to piss a lot of people off—as it rightfully should.Because when you disrespect your own characters the way Masashi Kishimoto did, a lot of people who spent most of their childhoods invested in the livelihood of the characters only to be told at the ending “I don’t actually give a single fuck about these characters or what they were primarily intended to represent” is a huge bitch slap to the face to the people who supported the creators work and art after all that time. It’s disgusting, it’s triggering and it’s horrifying. Sasuke’s character is primarily so popular due to how savage his creator treated him. Kishimoto started this universe off with a child suffering from traumatic loss by someone he adored with the essence of his existence—to end it by making that character not only a dog to the system that betrayed his entire clan, but rooted him to character that understood him the absolute least of all people. As an invested reader (as many of those were) this is disrespectful as fuck to do to a character. Kishimoto spent so much time reiterating to us about this broken, fucked up system only to have the one character going against it suddenly lay down and accept it, no more questions asked, silenced forever. If Sasuke Uchiha was at least handled and written correctly, people might’ve accepted the ending far easier, in time. However, this was not the case. Sasuke Uchiha represented oppression and injustice yet the ending made him even further ostracized. As in; his problems weren’t solved, his trauma wasn’t mended and his heart was still crushed. This hurt very many people, as it should. Your favorite character at the end of the story doesn’t even have a last word.

It’s the way that the Boruto series despite branching off into its own supposed direction and storyline continues to rob and borrow ideals from its predecessor in horrendous ways. In a way, I’m glad Boruto happened. I’m glad that the world sees something like Boruto because it highlights in clear depiction everything the studio and the “people” care about; ships, ships, rehash, ships, rehash. These are the people who watched Naruto and Naruto Shippuden to see Hinatits collapse while talking to Naruto, to see Sakura regress significantly when Sasuke is present—Boruto: Next Generations is aiming for those people and the studio damn well knows it and they are bringing what those people want to see, what’s going to get them to keep coming back. Because who cares about a child shinobi system highlighted as brutal in the original series? Not them! Let’s romanticize missions. Who cares about the Hyuuga Clan branch system? Not them! Let’s make sure we show everyone how important Hinata truly is. Oh and Neji? Yeah let’s never mention him again except for comedic relief. Who cares about punishing criminals and imprisonment? Not them! In fact let’s continue to bring in the main villain and even better let’s give him a child that he openly experimented on and portray him as a good parent! Who cares about all of those things? The true fans did. It’s the way they wash these important issues under the rug and never mention them again. It’s the way the issues that were tackled and prevalent in Naruto are no longer even discussed or mentioned. Because that was Neji Hyuuga, Sasuke Uchiha and Yahiko’s duties. Guess where all of them went. Notice that Sasuke is never seen in the village. Want to know why that is? Because he would challenge the system. Nope! Can’t have that—twelve years out on the hunt for a make believe villain you go Sasuke! The creators seem to not understand that the series can most definitely thrive if they were not continuously shitting on the old one; they could have created this universe in the Naruto realm that everything still exists without destroying the previous characters development. Naruto and Sasuke struggling against a battle with a weak minded villain with foolish ideals was atrocious—not to mention Sasuke goddamn Uchiha couldn’t dodge kunai. If the creators had actually paid attention during the original series, they would know that the Uchiha clan were one of the clans to master weaponry. So to have Sasuke—a Uchiha—struggling against them was a massive “fuck you” to his character and everything he made of himself. It definitely shows. Then they had Sakura attack the weak minded villain with a sneak attack, despite his entire cranium was shrouded in eyeballs and not seeing that attack coming. They really want us to buy this? Oh but wait—Boruto: Next Generations can’t have logic in it, people can’t read that deep into it. It’s a show for the new generation, it needs to be kid friendly. Maybe we just won’t notice, right? Yeah. Let’s pretend we don’t notice. In another way I’m glad Boruto happened, it reiterated to us significantly how unoriginal their ideals were as well as the incompetence of Kishimoto as a writer. Want to know a secret, my friend? We could have excused shitty writing if the story was satisfactory. We could have excused improper and rushed pairings with shitty writing, if the ending were justified and believable. Oh..but..that isn’t the case. In fact, the ending outright proved to us just how shitty of a writer Kishimoto actually is. So guess what? We’re pissed. The bullshit excuses of him being a young mangaka at the time is insanely inexcusable—it’s your profession to create stories and content and you fall back on discrediting your profession as undermining your own ability? My favorite outlandish lie that Kishimoto spoke was when he admitted he could not write romance—but Naruto was a series he wrote about the essence of the budding relationship between Naruto Uzumaki and Hinata Hyuuga. 

Wait—excuse me? But Kishimoto, you just said you are not very good at writing romance. My god..so why did you aim to write a romance story if you cannot write romance? Is it because…that isn’t what Naruto was about, perhaps?It’s the way that the authors intended dream for the protagonist became so undermined that he had to change his entire wording in order to make us believe that..it made sense. Yeah..believe it! Get this: Naruto Uzumaki an orphaned Konoha resident is ostracized due to harboring a demonic beast within him that wreaked havoc on the village years prior. Despite the sour looks and disdain of others, he perseveres on the journey to becoming Hoka—marrying Hinata Hyuuga. How fucked up would that make you feel? An average reader in the beginning would not derive that bullshit notion upon first picking that manga up. Could you imagine Masashi Kishimoto using that as his pitch? They’d throw him out the door quicker than Rock Lee’s downfall of being a relevant character. It’s the way that the own creator contradicts himself with his own wording. Stating he could not write romance and goes on to develop multiple—mutual—ships that take a back seat to underdeveloped asspull pairings. It’s the way that Boruto also fleshed out his inner shitty writing abilities by creating light novels. Here’s the thing about Light Novels; they are intended to explain situations, storyline or anything that does not initially fit in the manga itself or did not have time to be explained or developed. They are meant to help the reader themselves understand certain aspects or criteria that otherwise they wouldn’t have found in the original/initial material. Masashi Kishimoto decided now was his time to help everyone understand just how it was Naruto Uzumaki’s dream of becoming hokage was actually a fluke—it was to marry Hinata Hyuuga instead. Now this is after the disaster film of The Last. We’re still asking questions and here comes our Lord and Savior Masashi Kishimoto about to deliver us some tea!What the—there isn’t anything? There’s just Naruto boinking Hinata and..creating two children? Fine. You know what—you win this round Masashi Kishimoto. As a reader, we’re still confused about Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno, though. The Last showed zero development between them—we’d like to understand how it was they got together. Bless us with your Light Novels Kishimoto. Deliver us answers!

Okay, well so far this prologue is looking promising. Looks like we’ll be given answers regarding Naruto and Sasuke…okay, then..

What the devil….okay. So this is Sakura and..Sasuke’s relationship? He just—returns. And says he’s back. I mean this would be acceptable if he just returned from grocery shopping but haven’t you been gone for years, man? Okay..let’s uh..see if Sakura’s provides some insight about this..relationship.

For a summary, at the end of Sakura shinden, we are not provided answers regarding Sakura and Sasukes relationship in the slightest. Throughout her book she’s constantly..wet over him, that’s primarily all. In short, Kishimoto didn’t deliver us with answers to shit, except exposing his piss poor writing abilities. But wait! Wait, I forgot something! Oh that’s right—Gaiden! God how could I forgotten about Gaiden!? Maybe he provides some answers there for us?!Yeah to save you the trouble—he doesn’t. You’re welcome, I won’t torment your eyesight with the images. Kishimoto in Gaiden went on further confusing the relationship between Sasuke and Sakura. The point I am making here is that the reason those Light Novels and Gaiden became so popular was that people were expecting to read the material and gather information or answers that supported these relationships. To provide hindsight to their explanations or to at least give light as to how they started to develop that perhaps wasn’t in the manga. And the creator disrespects his fans so much that he doesn’t even give them that. He doesn’t provide answers, he doesn’t further explain information, he downright doesn’t do anything except appeal to what people want—I actually am not even sure what that exactly was for the Light Novels themselves, it all seemed like a mass of bullshit to me since they didn’t go on to explain particularly anything. People supported that man from beginning to the end and they were punched in the face repeatedly with the nonsensical explanations. Rightfully so, people should be pissed.

It’s the way the creator robbed a vast majority of people their time and investments to provide nonsensical endings with illogical pairings to support his work and art.People are pissed because he doesn’t care and all the evidence points to..he never did.

As I’ve stated previously; it’s not that we hate Boruto (the character included) it’s that we hate what it did to Naruto (the character included) and Sasuke for the sake of fan service and shipping bait. None of the questions we have were answered and absolutely nothing for these poor souls were justified. They are, instead, making a mockery of our childhood.

And that is what’s utterly disrespectful most of all.

Yes. I don’t like it at all. For many, many, manymanymany reasons. I wish I could I explain it in much more detail but my english is too broken for this haha.  First of all - Character Design. 

Besides Sasukes and Narutos Hair, what’s wrong with Saradas Outfit? Like…what kind of Shinobi is fighting in such short skirts?? This is so weird and out of …everything. So ‘’Non-Ninja-Like’’. The only design I kinda like is that one from Mitsuki and this other weird kid that reminds me of Zabuza …Iwabee?  ahh… That brings me to the next Point… Every character reminds me of failed replicas of already existing Characters. Why? When I watch BRT it feels like, I’m watching a bad written fanfiction that got it’s own show…

Character development-

Remember Hinata repeating NRT’S words? Never giving up, finding her own Nindo…blabla…Yeah, she gave up on being an Ninja. I never liked her but oh that made me dislike her even more. Just like Sakura, always calling the Names of their loved ones, instead of doing something influential by themselves. I don’t know, Kishimoto made me fall in love with his amazing male characters but I cant stand his females. 

But the Most Important thing -

This is how he sounds like to me You clearly can see, if you read the Manga, or watch the Anime, that Kishimoto doesnt really work on it (he’s keeping a watch on) , since it’s his assistant. Was it worth the money Kishimoto? Sasuke left the village and doesnt give a shit about his child for 12 years.  Naruto for some reason, is the only Hokage that DROWNS in Paperwork so he has to send his Bunshins for every kind of shit that happens?  Way to go to rape everything out of your characters for money. Instead of making everyone in this series a (horrible!) Parent, or a…’‘trying hard Naruto remake’’, I would have prefered a prequel of…the fuck what do I know….. Madara and Hashirama’s past. Or the life of Orochimaru.  I’d pay money for this shit. Yeah.. 

Don’t get offended if you like it, I honestly don’t care.  Everyone has their taste, that’s fine! But, it’s not my cup of tea. And now excuse me, 

I’ll go and watch the adventures of BORUTOS DAD.

Another addition to the world after Naruto. This is Nanashi in some of their more intense moments . They are from the “other” continent, a continent discovered by refugees once the one village was formed. They were a child soldier who now seeks to relive their childish whims and help Jakuro (for a fee). They equate money with power and seek to become rich enough to have status. They were experimented on to create what they thought a jinchuriki was back then, because the details were lost to time. They developed an uncontrollable ability that absorbs chakra from their surroundings. In order to curb this ability and save the lives of those around them, seals were placed on Nanashi that acted like chakra batteries. The seals absorb natural chakra at a regulated pace and release it to feed Nanashi’s chakra uocnless under duress.   They typically wear old sea faring jackets to cover their seals. I can’t wait to draw more of them!

Welp this one has quite a bit of story to her. I have an idea for a naruto fanfic/comic that instead of directly following the ending goes 50+ years in the future and follows a new set of characters (which is what I think Naruto should have done instead of Boruto but I will rant about that in a another post).

In order to try to regain the glory days some scientists decided to attempt to clone these ninjas from their names on the sealing scrolls. They started with Jiraiya of the legendary Sanin, creating Rikkimatsu. Rikki grows up under the tutelage of the researchers and an extreme amount of pressure to be like her forefather. She is much more reserved than Jiraiya and slowly begins to show that she has little to no talent with sealing, however due to the chakra infused in the sealing scroll which had the dna used to make her which is a doorway to a different realm she develops the ability to summon the dead using her ink. They appear like drawings with more or less detail depending on her chakra. She cant really control who shows up and the amount of chakra used to control them depends on how powerful they were in their time. She has a few weak well meaning ghosts that act as almost parental figures. She eventually escapes the labs taking the scrolls with her hoping that they would never be able to do this to someone again.

My Naruto Ending Pt.1

I will start this post saying I do not dislike Kishimoto and I will not spout hate. I disliked the ending for all the plot holes they created by letting Naruto live and the random pairing of characters and children. I wont go into detail because many people already have and I want to keep things positive :3.

My Au of sorts is kinda what I would have done with the series personally. Its not better or worse its just what I would have liked to see. Naruto dies at the last battle or soon after. Despite the fact that he didnt become hokage he had gotten what he wanted love and respect. This leaves the world reeling without Jinchuriki and really with a broken village system. The next series would be set 70+ years in the future focused on the consequences of the characters actions rather than them themselves, and allow fans to come to their own conclusions. The villages have come together under a sort of umbrella government that seeks to keep everyone unified, like during the Fourth war, by force if necessary. Many clans with kekkai genkai were forced to marry outside of the clan in order to create a sense of equality. Now most of the bloodlines are rare or have had negative draw backs due to different bloodlines clashing. They are often eradicated under the notion that is everyone is the same physically they can prevent another Madara. There are plenty of underground orginizations and civil war plagues the outskirts of the nations but many favor this to all out war. Many children do not know about their bloodlines or if they even came from a clan at all. During these years they also began to explore off of their continent meeting other nations if only recently.

Most of the Fourth war and everything leading up to it has become myth or legend. The concept of Jinchuriki has been changed to simply mean human weapon. The idea of Biju has been chalked up to ancient fairytales. Those who still believe that Biju existed have tried to imitate their power through way of experimentation with occasional success. The successful children were used to quell uprisings and display power to the foreign countries, however things backlashed and the children escaped.

Orochimaru has become a kind of fabled monster. No one has heard from him in years, then again no one has confirmed him to be dead. He has been quiet waiting from Indra and Asura’s reincarnation curious to see where it leads now that the curse of hatred has been broken, but even more so obsessed with the two believing one of their souls to be the key to perfections and Hagoromo’s power.

The main story follows characters not directly linked to the main cast. Some of them are but they are their own characters not carbon copies of their predecessors. Other clans have been formed underground. The story also flashes back to the years immediately following Narutos death through broken bits of text and through Rikkimatsu who I have already made a post about.

There are several other nuances but the world is more developed and has a bit more technology.

Phew I finally wrote it down. I hope to turn this into a comic or fanfiction but for now its an idea. Im sketching out the main characters and already have one up.This really sounds fun to write for me so lets see what happens :3 I have my own comics in the making but this is something I really wanted to do and gives me an excuse to practice without so much pressure. This is the second addition to the World After Naruto. With many clans and tales of great shinobi existing only as rumor or legend, one legend stood out the most, the legend of the Hatake clan. They were a clan that fell to disgrace but regained recognition once upon a time in the village of Konoha. After the passing of one Hatake with transplanted eyes, they continued, against his wishes to pass down said eyes generation to generation. The eyes slowing degraded over time and needed the help of seals and various augmentations to keep functioning. Each decendent was instructed to keep the sharigan safe, being the last vestige of Konohan pride. However all this is a folk tale, the Hatakes were said to have died off and no tale accounted how they looked. That doesnt stop Seekers from hunting down possible look a likes and gouging their eyes, or worse. It is a said that the Hatakes leave only madness and despair to in their wake.

This brings us to Jakuro, the last member of his clan, not unusual seeing that it was only one family. His eyes were given too him against his will and the seals keeping the eyes functioning also limit the eyes abilities. He can only copy a move once before the eyes lose their effectiveness. He can store moves away for later use but its one and done. He also needs glasses when his eyes are strained. He’s snarky, has extreme social anxiety and has a talent for creating weapons to get around the one time use clause. He wants to find a sealing specialist to remove the limiters to  use a time reversal jutsu to prevent the eyes from being transplanted in the first place and causing all the pain and suffering that they did.
