          alli HATES bars — well not always, but she’s really hating them now. there’s a reason she doesn’t come to these places without a friend in tow ( seriously, if she wanted to drink ALONE she’d do it in the nice comfort of her own apartment, thank you very much ). she hadn’t originally come alone tonight, but her friend has been in the bathroom like fifteen minutes now which is making her doubt exactly what’s going on in the bathroom. not really wanting to go find out personally, she makes her way back to the bar, hand up to flag the bartender who places a drink down on the bar in front of her before she can even get her order out. she picks up the glass, question OBVIOUS in her eyes before the woman jerks her thumb over her shoulder. the picture makes itself clear once she leans to the side to spot him, eyes rolling as she raises the glass in his direction in mock toast. but a quick survey of the room confirms that the other guy who’s been bothering her all night is still staring her direction in a way that feels a lot less friendly than her perpetual flirt. with LUCA, at least, she knows exactly what she’s getting into and that is enough to send her in his direction.     “ so what’s the occasion, sport ?? ”     she asks cheerfully, squeezing into the minimal space next to where he’s sitting, a perfectly shaped brow rising ( courtesy of des, certainly not her work ). red lips take a pull from her drink,     “ having trouble picking up ?? ”     somehow, she finds that unlikely.

silas was shocked when alli didn’t immediately accept his offer, shrugging as he gave her appearance a once over. “i can fix that. i know a pretty decent stylist with great tits. want me to give her a call?” never one to miss an opportunity to call up slyvia, silas reached for his phone and opened up his contact information. “i bet we could get you looking hot as hell in under an hour. you’ve got hella potential, ya know?” sure, she looked a little hot mess express currently, but with some fixing up, silas had a feeling she’d be bangin’ in no time.

         weight shifts to on her hands as she leans back, feet knocking gently against the cabinetry. eyes narrow as she examines silas before her ; he's serious, she realizes suddenly — though really that's not a surprise, she doesn't know why she finds it so.     " wow, you really know how to woo a girl, champ — "     she says dryly, which doesn't answer the proposition in the slightest. one hand pushes up a sleeve that's already sluggishly crawling its way back down her arm, a sigh leaving her lips that purse not long after the sound leaves them. she fixes silas in a RESIGNED stare, brows rising in a tired question,      " — can you please just find me the mop ?? "

          alli steps back into their apartment after dinner out with some friends --- a true rarity considering how few things she does that aren’t confined to work or their rented square footage. she knows that smell ; it’d soaked plenty of her college memories, even if she actually had never consumed an awful lot of it ( made her stomach upset ).     “ ramen again, bonds ?? ”     she states the obvious, kicking off her shoes at the door.     “ isn’t this like, the third night in a row — i know my cooking is no gordon ramsey but i’ll make you something REAL, if you want. ”     consider her being a bit more generous than normal. most nights, it’s all she can do to stick the food she prepped on sunday into the microwave in time for dinner.

          “ reid !! — my favorite flower boy. ”     faux surprise coats alli’s voice, as if she hasn’t come to the shop as frequently as she HAS. she turns from where she’s examining some arrangement with cut ferns that looks very nice ( but what else would she expect from this shop ). if only they looked that way FOREVER, huh ?? she still has a faint dream of having a place that looks more JUNGLE than apartment, but it’s fading out quickly. just too much maintenance for her LOW maintenance tendencies. there’s cut frond from a fern in her hand that she’s rescued from the floor, the wispy green leaf swishing through the air as she twirls it between her fingers.     “ what’d’ya got for me this time ?? ”

          “ sometimes i still think i’m back in COLLEGE — how different is it, really ?? ”     quite different, actually, but alli’s only paying attention to the similarities. she shifts the container of ice cream in her lap so it’s no longer dripping condensation onto her thighs.     “ me on the couch eating ice cream and pretending to watch things on netflix, YOU all dolled out, trying to get me to put a clean shirt on and go out. ”     there’s no real heat in her words, like she said, this is an ALL too familiar scene in her opinion ( even if going out now is hardly like the RAGERS back in ann arbor ).     “ c’mon, el — ”     brown eyes plead ( in what she suspects is in vain ) with her friend,     “ cut me some slack here. my brain needs ALL hours of the weekend to rest and recover before monday. ”

          “ they’re in there — ”     gaze still focused some game on her phone, alli points toward one of the dryers humming away with a load of laundry.     “ sorry if you’re one of those that hates strangers touching your clothes but i wasn’t waiting god knows how long for you to show up, and the other one is still broken. ”     she’s actually sitting atop the broken washer in question, bare toes curled over the edge with her knees drawn in toward her chest, nike slides abandoned on the laundry room’s floor. her own wash still has six minutes left thanks to some miscalculation on her part ( and that’s not worth going all the way back up to her apartment and back, so here she is waiting ). brown eyes finally raise as she loses her game with a small noise of frustration, brows raising at what she sees.     “ oh — actually that’s probably not your laundry, huh. ‘cuz you don’t really seem like a lace thong type, but maybe that’s just me. ”

          “ oh thanks — ”     it’s not OFTEN that alli gets complimented when she’s just out in about, and certainly not on a day off when she’s not at least somewhat put together in business casual. fingers pluck at the t-shirt in question ; the pattern is interesting, that’s probably way she’d picked it up in the first place and certainly not because of the coffee stain near the hem that still hasn’t come out. ( oh well, adds character or something, right ?? ).      “ thrift shop, i think. or like, a garage sale. ”     fingers drop the fabric and she flashes a smile up at the obviously prettier girl.

          it’s EMBARRASSING, really, but alli isn’t above much when it comes to making the best boxed mac ‘n cheese the world has to offer. she raps on her neighbor’s door, still barefoot ( because really it was all of six feet or whatever across the hall ) and swathed in what would be a signature oversized flannel if anyone really saw that much of her. the longer she stands there though, the less certain she is in this course of action. luckily, she’s just debating retreat when there’s signs of light behind the door.     “ heeeeeeey — ”     she goes for a friendly smile as the door opens,     “ sorry to bother you at this hour but do you have any MILK i can use ?? forgot mine went bad and i dumped it out this morning but like i’ve already boiled the pasta and while i’m not ABOVE eating buttered pasta, i’d really prefer not to, y’know ?? ”

                 with slightly raised eyebrows, ezra is surprised at her candid response, washed over with relief as he realizes he won’t have to justify having no whereabouts or special plans for the infamous saturday night, again. as that’s usually how the conversation would go with most of his colleagues and friends alike, who seemed to spend all week anticipating this day. and he was no different, yet, his reasonings coincided more with alli’s, so he’s quick to confide the same sentiment.     “ well, that makes two of us. ”     … perhaps too quickly, as he almost chokes on his coffee when he takes a moment to think TWICE about his previous statement.     “ i meant, you know, MY bed. not, uh — … ”       in disbelief, he simply shakes his head at himself, looking away momentarily because, is the coffee hot enough to turn his face RED ?

                “ yeah, something like that. ”     his shrug is bashful as he takes a moment to consider his words more carefully, not wanting to bore alli.     “ just … heading up to lincoln center. i’ve got a solo recital coming up, they somehow convinced me to open the show, to make matters worse. ”     despite scrunching up his nose, his tone is lighthearted. simultaneously, ezra was aware of how counterproductive his worrying was, and he also knew himself well enough to acknowledge he’d be nervous all the way up to the moment he began hitting the keys, his anxiety dissipating as he focused on the music instead of the CROWD.     “ i reckon none deserves to hear me practice this early in the morning. ”       with another sip, he sighs lightly.     “ apartments, right ? it’s like college all over again. ”

         " right — "     alli hides her smile with a sip of coffee to spare ezra at least SOME of the embarrassment. she had known what he'd meant, but it was cute, him trying to backpeddle out of an easily misconstrued turn of phrase ; truth was, she'd felt she'd figured out months ago that he wasn't literally trying to get into her bed unless he was playing the world's longest con, in which she probably would have to commend the dedication. no, she's decided that ezra is harmless as far as things go --- a REFRESHING take, really ; even with her habit of very rarely ever going out.

         " c'mon, champ — "     she says coyly, a comeradic punch directed lightly at his shoulder.     " if you're talented enough to open the show, i'm sure no one who lives in your building's filing a noise complaint : it'd be a shame. basically a free show, y'know ?? "     'course, alli's a little biased, having never progressed past mediocre middle school recitals when she was ten and her parents were putting her through the paces of EVERYTHING ( spoiler : nothing had really stuck, except maybe field hockey, but that'd been more luck than anything else ). in her opinion, she remained utterly TALENTLESS, unless you counted her ability to successfully complete uni projects the night before they were due. and it's not like she had a problem with that ; the problem was when other people had a problem with that. head tilts to the side, smile gentle,     " but you're right, incredibly similar to the college experience. have physically remind myself that i'm still not there sometimes. "

          “ just because i complained once in the elevator about not wanting to look TIRED doesn’t mean full make over, des. ”     alli isn’t normally one to WHINE( it doesn’t get anything done and she is frankly just too cool to whine ), but there’s a certain high pitched tone in her voice that might classify as one. whatever, she’ll completely deny it. the pile of make up looks incredibly intimidating if she’s being honest --- and way more than she has time for in the morning considering just brushing her hair sometimes alludes her.      “ i, like, don’t need to look hot to lay on my couch or even like, to go to work. ”     the two things that take up most of her waking lifetime. pathetic, actually, if she thinks about it.

silas’s forehead wrinkled as he looked back at her, once again completely lost by what she was telling him. “isn’t that what the machine is for? it’s the one job the thing has, and it can’t even do it right? that’s bullshit.” leaning back against the wall, silas watched as alli rolled up her sleeves, and reached into the pocket of his sweatpants, rather than do the same. “or…” he retrieved his wallet, and pulled a couple bills out from inside. “what if i pay you to do it. plus a generous tip? and… if you finish fast enough, i’ll take you out with me tonight. ever been in a vip section before? they’re way better than the regular, trust me.”

         " you don't put regular octane in a race car — SAME principle. "     okay, maybe the metaphor is lacking a little bit, but she's still pretty proud of it all the same. brown eyes watch him as he pulls out his wallet, rolling yet again at the sight of the money and subsequent offer.     " i just said i wasn't your maid, champ. "     hands drop from her hips to the counter, hoisting herself to sit atop the fancy marble in one smooth motion ( at least all those half-hearted pushups were good for something ). she's not offended, more BEMUSED than anything, though she supposes 'rich boy tries to pay his way out of actual work' is the least surprising headline in her mind.     " do i LOOK like a vip — "     she gestures to her overall SCRAGGLY appearance. not a self deprecating comment, just a fact.     " i don't think so. besides, got a half a world to beat in poly bridge tonight and gotta say that sounds like way less effort. "

ofezra​:

               although he’d describe it as painful to leave his apartment this early in the morning, ezra quickly took solace as he left his apartment building to encounter quiet streets ; the city was still asleep. from his walk to the station, that let him ponder and dwell on his own eternal internal monologue, from finding a seat in the subway, which would give him an opportunity to breeze through a few more pages of his book. often pessimistic, he enjoyed finding the good in most situations, it almost kept him going. recently, a familiar face was something he also looked forward to seeing, every time he reached a certain point in his commute, he’d scan the slowly but surely growing crowd to find her. his headphones played a classical tune he was memorizing for an upcoming recital, his fingers instinctively drumming against his leg, imagining the keys. despite his almost brooding exterior, when his gaze fell on alli, the familiarity that came with her broke his features into a soft grin, that stretched out in amusement at her words, ezra removing the headphones and taking the cup in his hands.     “  hmm, i don’t know about all that …  ”    he trails off, both sheepish and playfully looking away, before shooting her a smile.     “  but this sure makes me feel like i could. thank you — next time’s on me, i insist.  ”     he brings the cup up, his eyes slightly squinting when he came in contact with the hot drink, yet he continued to gulp it down.     “  you looking forward to anything, today ?  ” he questions, suddenly remembering it’s saturday.

         alli waves a dismissive hand, coffee cup otherwise has her mouth engaged as she takes another healthy sip of the stuff. it's HOT, but not enough to singe her tastebuds at least — silver linings.     " i told you, let the corp pay for your coffee — you just gotta be quicker next time, i guess. "     she levels a smile at him, still a little tired and soft around the edges, though she's a little more awake now between the walk to the station and the caffeine slowly making its way through her body. nose scrunches up in MILD distaste at the mention of it being saturday and yet them colliding here yet again at an early hour.

         the truth is closer to some backed up work, an impending deadline, and a frantic call from her boss just the night before to please come in and fix these drawings in the morning. she had, of course, said yes, for no reason other than the fact she probably ( no, definitely ) didn't have anything better to do. that sounds boring too explain though, even to her.     " — my BED, when i get back home. "     she says instead solemnly, and even though it's said more to be a joke, the sentiment is also a hundred percent accurate. a brow quirks over a mischievous smile,       " so — you always here this early on your saturday or today just EXTRA special for both of us ?? "

“than why do they call it that?” an exasperated sigh fell from his lips before they turned down into a pout. was it his fault that his maid was on vacation this week? maybe it was his fault that he’d tried to do everything himself, just to see if he could, but he really hadn’t thought it’d all be this hard. how regular people lived with housekeepers that only came once or twice a week, he had no idea, and it seemed inhumane to him. though the bubbles had been pretty cool at first, but after realizing that there was no ‘bubble’ function that he’d accidentally pressed, he’d been forced to turn the machine off and take a trip down the elevator to alli’s apartment. 

fortunately, though she’d mocked him the whole way back up to his place, she agreed to come back with him and help out. he found it to be a little rude, how no one ever seemed to call him ‘genius’ in a way that wasn’t sarcastic, but if he’d been forced to choose between beauty and brains, he knew he’d stick with what he’d been gifted anyway. and… it’s not like she was entirely wrong, for mocking him right now. especially when he walked back inside, and saw his soap covered kitchen floor. “shit.”

         " it's for YOU to wash your dishes with, not the machine. "     there's no 'duh' tacked onto the end of the words, but there might as well have been given her tone. alli's bravado wavers for a moment as she enters the kitchen, a sigh falling from her lips at the sight of the MESS — no, it wasn't like she was doing anything that incredibly important in the grand scheme of things, but between mopping silas' floor and finished world 4 in poly bridge 2, she definitely knows which one she rather be doing. but even as she's having the thought, she's rolling up the sleeves on her oversized flannel and thinking about the best way to tackle this.

         " well, they say EXPERIENCE is the greatest teacher — "     alli states with faux pompism, finishing her left sleeve and moving to the right one.     " let this be a very POTENT reminder to never do this again. "     she's half jesting, half serious, really. gaze returns to her hopeless millionaire cast, hands propped dramatically on her hips,     " so ?? where's the mop ?? and change into something that costs less than a thousand dollars because i am NOT your maid and therefore will not be doing this myself. "

          “ — dish soap in the dishwasher ?? ”     alli repeats, the disbelief in her voice might be more audible if she wasn’t already laughing from her spot in his doorway. arms are crossed stubbornly over her chest, a thrifted oversized flannel pulled over a sports bra swathing most of her body in a forest green plaid.     “ haven’t i told you not to do that before ?? ”     she can’t actually remember if she’s said such a thing ; it’s unlikely, honestly. as much as she likes to hold what she considers her far better life skills over silas, the truth is she was not born with a mothering gene and isn’t so good at preventing things like this as she is laughing at them after the fact and then begrudgingly helping him out of it. her laughter finally subsides and eyes roll in what might be a fond motion before she’s brushing past him into his apartment,     “ alright genius, show me the damage. ”

          some days alli doesn’t even know what she’s doing with her life — well, actually that’s most days, but especially this early in the morning when she’s dragging her ass to work like every other sad person in this city. eyes blink rapidly as she shuffles through crumpled bills that’d been shoved into her pocket as she waits for her coffee. damn contacts, like shoving sandpaper in her eyes at this hour. she separates out a five, tucks the rest back into her pocket. fingers drum against the top of the vender’s cart, gaze wandering almost blurrily around the platform. it finally settles on a familiar face that’s easily the second best thing she’s seen this morning ( the first, being her coffee ).     “ uh — make that two, ”     she tells the woman behind the cart, and it’s not long before she has two cups filled to the brim with hot caffeine in hand. a long slug is taken gratefully from one as she walks over to her morning commute partner.     “ hey champ — ”     one of the coffees is extended with a world weary smile.     “ — ready to SAVE the world ?? ”     there’s a sarcastic note in her voice that’s hard to miss, but amusement buried there too — familiar with the worn out joke.
