Emphasis/Focal Point Project
This image is a scene of a boardwalk next to a beach. There are a row of palm trees across the composition, and several different people are seen walking or jogging on the path going in all sorts of directions. The entire image is in black and white, except for a girl all the way to the right of the image. She is seen in color wearing a hot pink bikini. When first looking at the image, the first thing that my eye went to was the girl in the bikini. This is because she is the only thing in color. The color of her bathing suit also plays a large roll in the way she draws in the eye. Since it is such a bright color, it stands out from the rest. However, if it was a color that was more dull, I don’t think it would be as successful. I also noticed that there is a man jogging towards her from the left side of the image. He is staring towards the girl in the bikini and is facing her, which also contributes to making her the focal point of the picture. I think this is very successful in creating a focal point and giving emphasis to a small portion of the picture. It is obvious that the girl in the bright bikini is the subject of the image because of how much she stands out.
Focal Point and Emphasis Project
Texture Project
This image is in black and white, and includes several different patterns throughout different parts. It is not a picture, however, it seems to be a drawing of a picture. It is of two palms trees on a bed of sand, which a light sky in the background. The palm trees are drawn differently, and are not identical to each other. Each one is made with different patterns. The one on the left is made with a darker marker with thicker lines. It is also larger than the one on the left. By using dark and thicker lines, this gives the impression that the tree on the left is darker in color and maybe has a different pattern of leaves than the other. The tree on the right is made with thinner lines, and the pattern on the leaves looks like it was done with a much quicker motion. The trunk of this tree is particularly interesting because it gradually gets darker as you go from top to bottom. This is done by many little dots on the page, to make the value darker when there is more dots in one place. Behind the tree is a sky which is made up of several swirls. They are made with thin lines, which suggests that the sky is a lighter color, and it was a nice day. If they were done darker and thicker, I think it would seem as though the sky was stormy. Finally, there is a checkered pattern make in the sand under the trees. It is dark and also light. Sand is usually a lighter color, however, in this image the sand is depicted to be dark. For this reason, I don’t think the sand is successful. I think that the pattern of dots that is seen in the trunk of the right tree would be a good texture for the sand, and you would be able to create a lot of cool values with this texture. I think the swirls in the sky are a nice pattern and suggest a nice breezy day. Finally, I think that the dark lines made on the left tree are not successful because they are much different than the one on the left which is lighter. It would be great to see the original photo and be able to compare the two images to see what the first one looked like when you were drawing it!
Color Heritage Project
In this project, I chose to depict my Italian heritage using the colors red white and green. Which are, if not obvious, the colors on the Italian flag. My culture is a very important part of who I am, ever since I was little I was taught to eat like a big girl, cook like my mother and grandparents, as well as other Italian familial traditions. I was never taught Italian, the language, because none of my relatives who I was close with knew the language fluently. Instead, I wanted to make sure to travel the country and explore not only my Sicilian roots, but also every possible land i can cover in a vacation period of time. The use of color is not significant to me alone because hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people share the same heritage as me, but I think it is important to have pride in your culture and be knowledgable on its history. I hope you all enjoy this because it is a fun way of showing off pride through the flag itself, which waves across my face like a mask or a banner that I am and would always be proud to rock!
In this image, most of the frame is filled with the face of a girl who is looking at the camera. She seemed to have taken this picture of herself, and is posing for the photo. She seems to be in the car, and you can tell because she is wearing a seatbelt, and you can also see the window of the car. Throughout the picture, there are elements of color. Outside of each window, there are images of colorful buildings, as if she is driving through this scenery. These buildings are usually seen in Italy. On the ceiling of the car, there are strips of red and green, as well as an image of the Italian flag above the window. Also very noticable is the Italian flag that is draped across her face like a mask on her eyes. It is somewhat transparent, which makes it seem like it could even be a part of her skin. The last thing that I noticed is the color of her eyes. Her eyes are a bright red, which corresponds to the rest of the red throughout the image.
From this image and the colors that it includes, it can be assumed that the girl in the image is from Italian descent. She seems to be proud of her heritage because of the way that the mask is so obvious on her face, and she is wearing it proudly. The way that she is in a car and seems to be driving through Italy is very interesting. The only colors shown in the picture are the colors of the Italian flag. These colors are very well-known to be associated with Italy when they are next to each other. By including these colors, it is obvious that the girl is Italian. The colors probably aren’t very significant to her on a personal level, but they do remind her of her heritage, which makes them important. The use of the “mask” on her face is very successful to give the message of being proud of one’s heritage.
Texture Project
Scale (first)- In the photo, the man is placed next to the pillars of a building. By comparing the man to the building, it is easy to tell how massive the pillars are.
Proportion (second)- Proportion can be played with in photography and art to make smaller things seem much larger than they actually are and vice versa.
Color Heritage Project
This image depicts what I see to be my heritage. By making use of color, I combined it all as one. It shows the outline of the United States, which is where I was born and raised. However, inside the U.S. is three different countries: Holland, Italy, and Germany. These make up the biggest part of my heritage, but are all brought together in the United States to make up myself. Each country is filled with the colors of its flag. In the case of these three countries, each of their flags consist of three striped colors, and all of which include the color red. Each of the colors within the country are representative for the country itself, making them important in signifying each one from the rest. The colors of Italy are especially interesting, because they symbolize characteristics of the country itself: white for the snowy Alps and other mountain regions; green for the plains and the hills; and red for blood spilt in the Italian wars of independence.
The outline of the United States is filled in with navy blue, one of the countries colors. The blue in the American flag represents vigilance, perseverance and justice, which is much of what the country stands for. Around the edges of the composition are red stars. These stars are meant to reference the stars scene on the American flag. And they are red in reference to bring together the color that all the countries have in common. As a person, I am a mixture of all of these places and their colors.
Focal Point (first)- In most homes, the furniture is often pointed at a television or a fireplace. In this case, the television or fire place is the focal point of the room.
Emphasis (second)- Emphasis can be created when one thing is different and stands out from the rest. The white flower is emphasized because it is the only white flower in a group of purple.

Value Project
In this piece, there is an obvious range of value throughout all aspects. Value has been made from different pieces of paper, probably from a magazine. The remake is very accurately to scale of the original photo of the deer. There is aspects of line and shape in the antlers and in the different shapes of value. Instead of perfectly blending into one another, the shadows are made of shapes piled on top of one another to create the image of the deer. The grass is made differently than the deer, however. Instead of being made of of several pieces of paper, it seems to simply be a larger photo. It is hard to depict what the photo is, but it is successful in creating the illusion of grass as well as a similar texture.
While the picture on the left is from a magazine and in color, the picture made on the right is black and white. It has taken the values of color from the original picture and recreated it in greyscale. I noticed that the eye and nose of the deer on the left looks almost drawn on. They are very realistic and are similar to that of the other deer. Overall, the piece is successful in recreating the grey scale of the found image. By using several shapes and colors of value, it is successful.
