Underutilized whump situation?
Getting tortured is exhausting. Like, physically exhausting. The crying, shaking, trembling, pain is a huge strain on your body and will wipe you out fast.
A whumpee getting tortured horribly and collapsing exhausted onto their whumper afterwards, unable to hold themselves up or stay awake no matter how scared or horrified of their whumper. Just falling asleep in the source of their misery’s lap, tear tracks still oozing down their face. Their whumper just chuckles and pats their hair - they can sleep. For now.

A whumpee is caught trying to escape or fomenting rebellion. They are dragged out into a public place and bound kneeling with their hands cuffed to the ground in front of them. The ritual number of lashes is given, furrowing their back and flicking around the edges of their shoulders, their arms, the bare soles of their feet.
When the whip stills for the last time, they sag forwards, hardly able to believe they survived. But they are not released, and dimly they hear the number of hours they must wait under the sun before they will be released.
They took a whipping. They can survive the waiting.
They can’t muster the energy to flinch when something weighted thunks down near their slumped body, but it doesn’t inflict more pain on them, and they ignore it in favor of making sure they manage to take one breath, and then another.
They can hear people passing by. They’ll be a spectacle, a lesson, a witness to the folly of resistance.
They’ll be a symbol, a sign, a marker that there are still those who dream of freedom.
Footsteps pass closer. It’s fine, they have to get through the square somehow. But then they pause, and the whumpee cracks tear-crusted eyes open to see an arm dipping into the bucket that’s been left next to them.
They catch, briefly, the look of regret on the civilian’s face – and behind them the watchful guards – before they toss the handful of salt across the whumpee’s torn-open back.
When awareness fades back in from the white-hot spike that pierced them, the whumpee cowers from the sounds of more people passing through the busy square. Each one slows, as they must, to dip their hand into the bucket and offer tribute to the spectre of order propped up by looming guards and the vice of collective fear.

Hmmmm...... there are two whumpees, A, who had been with whumper a while, and the other recently captured whumpee B who is apart of a team. The team comes to rescue B and takes A with them, but A feels awkward and isolated after being rescued, having only being rescued because B's team came to save their friend.....

Abandonment issues but they were right all along-
A had actually had friends of their own, a team they thought they could rely on for anything- but it has been so long and there had never been a sign of them so the whumpee just stopped struggling and accepted their situation.
B’s team tries to befriend A, but A is convinced that they’re forcing themselves to be friendly since in their eyes, they’re just a burden on the team- after all they just happened to be in the same area.
A is extremely jealous, B’s team had looked for them almost immediately while nobody had cared about the fact that A was missing.

She was never very good at being kind.
But Whumper gave her an order, gave her a command to take care of the new pet, and she wasn’t allowed to say no, wasn’t allowed to say anything.
She moves softly and carefully, making sure not to wake him up. He was shaking in his sleep, sweating like crazy and mumbling every once in a while.
With him asleep, she addresses his injuries. There were tons of bruises littering his body, but she couldn’t do anything about those. What she could do was stitch up the deep wound on his stomach, and set his wrist in a makeshift splint.
She grabs his hand, bringing it up to examine it. She couldn’t see bone, but it was horribly bruised and definitely bending in a way it shouldn’t. She sighed. It’ll take forever to heal, and it would be painful to set.
The hand is pulled away violently, and she gasps and looks down, retracting her arm.
His eyes are wide open, terrified and confused and in terrible pain. She’s almost glad to see him that way. Without the pain, he’ll never learn Whumper’s lessons, and that was the only way to survive.
“Who-who are you?” He asks, and then coughs at the effort.
“Shut up,” she retorted. “I’m only trying to help.”
“Are you... a doctor?”
She shook her head no and offered her palm, waiting for him to give his wrist back to her. “No, but I have orders, and you need a splint.”
He reluctantly raises his arm, wincing painfully at the shifting bones. She doesn’t give him a countdown when she sets it, and he screams loud enough to make her lean away for a moment, hiding her wince.
She finishes the splint, and then hopes he passes out from pain so he doesn’t keep screaming. She’d leave now if she could, but she was ordered to stay until he was bandaged properly, and then asleep.
But he doesn’t fall asleep for a while, breathing heavy and eyelids half closed.
“Can you fall asleep already?” She whispers impatiently.
She’s surprised when he chuckles, not knowing he could hear her. “You’re in a rush?”
She snorts. “Yeah, I’m not here because I want to be.”
“Then, why are you here?” He looks up at her with the same innocence she once saw in herself, and she forcibly looks away.
“Because I have to be,” she says simply.
He doesn’t let up like she had hoped. “Why?”
She laughs incredulously. “Have you not gotten the memo? Can you not read a room? He’d kill me if I disobeyed an order, and I was ordered to be your nurse, alright? Now just fall asleep so I can leave already.”
He doesn’t reply for a while, his eyelids falling closed. She watches for a while, counts his breaths and wonders if he’s actually asleep.
She stands to go, but something grabs her ankle. She looks down, and he looks just as pathetic as she once did.
“Please,” he begs, voice quiet and shaking. “Don’t leave me.”
She doesn’t say anything, but sits back down and stays. She doesn’t know why, but she knows she had wished someone stayed by her side when she was still new. She hopes it’s enough for him to fall asleep. He wouldn’t be getting very much rest after tonight.
"Whumpee, care to remind me which way knees bend?"
"Whumpee," Whumper said, slowly pacing around them. "Care to remind me which way knees bend?"
Whumpee glared up at them, from where they'd been forced on their knees, Whumper's henchmen roughly pressing down on their shoulders to keep them there. "Go to hell," they spit.
Whumper only smiled. "What a shame. I think you need a reminder as well." They gestured to their men, who yanked Whumpee up, pinning them between them. Whumpee struggled slightly, before realizing that they were trapped.
Whumper walked behind them for a moment, before returning with a large metal bat. Turning it over in their hands, they smiled. "Now, typically I'm a bit more refined than this, but-" they sighed dramatically- "you were the one who insisted on trying to run away."
They lined the bat up with one of Whumpee's knees, swinging and pulling back at the last second, laughing at the way Whumpee flinched. "So," they continued. "Now I have to punish you. Let's make sure you don't try to run again any time soon."
They swung again, but this time they let it hit. There was a wet crack and Whumpee slumped down, screaming. They were still screaming when Whumper hit their other knee, shattering it too.
Whumpee was unceremoniously dropped, crumping to the ground, sobbing. Whumper stood over them, smirking. "Good luck trying to go anywhere now," they said with a laugh before stepping over Whumpee, walking away.
Got a new laptop to replace my broken one so hopefully I’ll be a little more active on here again! My mental health is terrible though so writing still feels hard, and I want to write because I feel inspired to, not because I feel like I have to. I know the urge will come back, it always does in the end.
Also if you’re a primarily whump blog following me and I haven’t followed back, feel free to let me know! I try to check blogs when they follow me and follow back if they post whumpy stuff relevant to my interests (which is just about any and all types of whump) but I sometimes miss some or don’t have the energy to go through them
Tbh I think fandom generally needs to get better at sitting with the uncomfortable fact that a story/fanwork/meme/whatever can hurt one person and help another
This is why I think “tag warning” culture is kinder and more constructive than cancel culture / “no problematic content” culture. One size does not fit all, but if we learn to be more aware of the fact that the same thing can be emotionally validating or cathartic to one person and upsetting to another, and pick up a general mindset of thinking before we post, “what might people need a heads up for in this content?”, we grow more compassionate, more thoughtful, and more understanding of the differences in people’s experiences.

and we also need to let go of the scrupulosity that says you must be 100% responsible for your readers’ comfort. there are several reasons to get rid of that.
bullies and manipulators will use it to jerk you around
it will either pointlessly increase your anxiety, or
give you a false sense of security, depending on whether you think you CAN actually tag for all triggers, and
you really, REALLY can’t. you can’t. it’s not possible.
i have so many obscure little triggers from school-based abuse that even i couldn’t tell you how to avoid them, and without that conversation there’s no way in hell for you to know that if you have an authority figure knock pencils or pens on the floor i’ll think i’m fine but then i’ll have nightmares the next 3 nights. i didn’t know until it happened. then the next time, it didn’t happen, but the smell of plasticine clay set me off. my medical trauma is like... i can read the most gruesome body horror, and then a throwaway line where a nurse is a little brusque will send me to frown town all day.
my mental health is not for you to protect. it’s not your job and i honestly don’t want you trying. i kinda find those “mind the warnings and take care of yourself” author’s notes condescending and rude, though i know they’re kindly meant.
just... tag for the basics. non-con. body horror. animal cruelty. if a frequent reader asks politely for you to tag a particular thing, and that thing is easy to identify and either exists or doesn’t exist in your work (say, vomiting, or death by fire), you might want to agree, but you do not have to. it is perfectly valid to say, “sorry, bro, but i really can’t keep track of extra tags, so you might not wanna keep reading.” i have cognitive disabilities, i usually can’t remember whether i’ve had lunch on any given day, i’m not going to promise you i’ll remember to tag for like... arguments in an elevator. i’m not mocking your triggers, mine are just as finicky, see above, but i just can’t do it, fam.
re OP’s point, SO MUCH YES, and also let me point out that sometimes a tag warning is helpful not because you want to avoid a thing, but because you don’t want it to be a surprise.

Poor Whumpee is in a pretty bad situation, and they have no idea what’s going to happen. What should happen next?
Whumpee was free and caretaker thought things were gonna go back to normal now. But then whumpee broke a rule. And they needed caretaker to punish them. Whumpee refuses to move, eat or sleep until punished properly so caretaker had no choice...and even tho they won’t admit it...it kinda felt good
"Whumpee, come on. It's been nearly two days." Caretaker sighed, resting their head in their hands.
Whumpee kneeled on the carpet, swaying slightly. "I- I broke a rule," they mumbled. "I broke a rule and, and I need to be punished."
Caretaker glanced up at them. "If I.. punish you, then will you please go back to normal?" At a swift nod from Whumpee, Caretaker slowly began to take off their belt. "O-okay," they said, steadier than they thought they'd be.
Immediately, Whumpee straightened their posture, displaying their back for Caretaker. Adjusting their grip on the belt slightly, Caretaker didn't give themself much time to think before they hit Whumpee. Whumpee barely moved, stifling any noise they might've made.
Instead, they whispered, "One."
Caretaker went up to ten, easily falling into a steady rhythm. By the end, they were panting slightly and Whumpee's soft cries had grown louder. When Caretaker scooped Whumpee up into a soft embrace, they realized that it had never felt so sweet to hold them.
