Something I liked about Skinamarink was how the kids did all they could do within their age set and problem solving skills, what’s common of children their age:

Stay downstairs in an area that’s more controlled and feels safer, stick together, sleep under the covers, stay quiet

Keep the lights on, keep turning on the night lights when they go out, carry around a flashlight

Keep the TV on and toys around for comfort and a distraction

Back away from and leave when something is concerning until it disappears, listen and do what it says when something that appears older or more powerful tells you so

Try to make it seem less dangerous, think of it as good or curious rather than insidious and cruel, try to reason with it or learn about it, try to find a happier explanation about where their father is

And none of it worked because that’s all realistically magical thinking that children haven’t grown out of. They were sitting ducks from the beginning with no way to survive. They were doomed the moment the doors and windows disappeared from the house.

skinamarink is a specific horror movie for anyone who once took a nap as a kid in the middle of the day in the living room couch right next to your parents and then woke up hours later on the couch by yourself and your parents aren’t in the room anymore and it’s pitch black outside the windows and the only light in the downstairs is the blaring light of the tv and the feeling of being completely uncomfortable and alone
