Summer 2024 Watchlist

It is officially summer which means I am out of school and have time to just sit !!! watch !!! and do nothing !!!

which means - here's my drama watchlist & my thoughts on everything so far:

Dare to Love Me - i started this yesterday and let me j say I flew through those 2 episodes. I decided to brave the comments on MDL to see what people were saying, and then i ignored them LOL because yeah. this show is highkey silly goofy but i love it! the FL is endearing to me and i hate how nowadays every woman has to be Strong and Confident to be loveable and it's like - no. i love the fact that she gets choked up, that she tries and fails, that she is mad clumsy, that she's clearly talented but has been burdened by lack of self-esteem like yes!!! she's human i love it give me MORE. and don't get me started on the ML. i love him - i love THEM your honor. currently at a 9.0 rating for me, we'll see if it keeps up.

Dating in the Kitchen - this has a 8.0 rating for me and i want to keep going (i only watched 1 episode and it's been two weeks since then) because i watched This Isn't What I expected THREE (3!!) times and i LOVE that movie and when I saw there was a drama based on it, i wanted to give it a go but i am STRUGGLINGGGG. imma keep it pushing because, look. i watched the movie 3 times. it's def worth it. (maybe)

Fight for My Way - this has a 9.5 rating rn, and i am stuck in the middle of episode 15. i have been stuck on the middle of episode 15 for a HOT minute. my interest in this show dropped like crazy, i am trying to hold on.

Good Morning Call - my roommate for two years (and sadly no more a ha ha) recommended this show to me and we watched the first episode together and it was cute! i liked it, so it's on my list. currently has a 8.5 rating, but it's low on my priorities (when it comes to dramas), so im gonna pirate it whenever i have time💀

Lovely Runner - don't even talk to me about this show if you want a short conversation - I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS SHOW BRO. look at my tumblr, it's all lovely runner rn and I HAVE NO REGRETS. 9.5 rating - won't get a 10 because it ENDS SOON. this is my type of show, i LOVE this type of show the cinematography and everything IM EATING IT UP. it got me out of my drama funk its so nfjsdfhdsifsd

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon: let me just say! i watched this yesterday and i flew by the two episodes. lovely runner x tmrih on my tumblr? yes. this show is a much slower-pace show and I LOVE IT. YEs! Give me real life, give me real conversations! I love this show, i love the micro-expressions, i love the fact that WHJ is the MAIN LEAD FOR ONCE LIKE YES SIR, GIVE ME ALL THE BUTTERFLIES and i've never seen this actress before JRW but she is absolutely gorgeous and i love the FL! these people are not acting, they ARE the characters and im so !!!!! 9.0 rating because i skip the intro every time (sorry)

Will Love in Spring - this is on pause on episode 15 because the ending actually has me severely messed up rn. i have been in love with li xian's acting since gogosquid and i absolutely adore chen mai dong. i adore the way zhuang jie says his name ALL the time like she can't help it. I adore zhuang jie and just the way she operates through life - she's so clearly flawed when it comes to romantic love, but she is so clearly filled with love and always tries her best and !!! zhou yu tong is eating her character up rn, i've never seen her act and this was such a good intro to her BUT WHAT ZHUANG JIE SAID TO MY BOY IN EPISODE 15????? locked up. i have never felt so disrespected in my life and i had to give it a pause because i know she's gonna apologize but i needed that on the train. not the next episode. actually, not even on the train!! IN THE STREET BEFORE HE DROVE OFF AFTER DRIVING HER HOME AFTER SHE ACCUSED HIM OF FORCING HER!!!! That's when she should have apologized, but fidjofdshifudsf i love her so much i know why she couldn't IM JUST IN AGONY RN. anyways, let me breathe lol cause the way i was holding my breathe writing that is,,,,,. yeah. has an 8.5 rating rn, will probably go up to 9.5 because the fact that i actually had to stop watching because of emotional damage is crazy.

ADDING ON TO THIS LIST BECAUSE it's summer and I went a little crazy:

8. The Smile Has Left Your Eyes - I started this show late at night on Sunday and got through 7 episodes. i spent 7 HOURS on this show from late night Sunday to Monday. This show is exquisite. It's actually kind of funny thinking about my reactions to this show. me before i got deeper into my faith would've been absolutely attached in the worst possible way to kim moo young because he would've reminded me of myself and my absolute inability to get it together emotionally. me now after being baptized is lik: i want to see him grow and stop being self-destructive because, as someone who was self-destructive for majority of my life, but now can fight against that and is actively better for it?? being in that type of darkness sucked. like, every day was a fight. i'm only on episode 7 so idk when moo young fr met yoo jin kang, but i alr understand that she's his light rn. (highkey unhealthy but LOL) and that's so understandable. it's just crazy. anyways.

sorry about getting personal LOL, but I really do love this show and dont get me started on yoo jin gook and tak so jung's relationship!! i need them married asap she knows she likes that man IDK WHY SHE PLAYING RN!!!

rating for this show is a solid 9. i've seen some concerning comments about this show but i decided this is my life and i can watch what i want ✌️ (again as always, tho. i always take recs)

adding onto this list again because i clearly lost my mind:

9. Falling Into Your Smile - I binge-watched this entire show in a week. XU KAI THE MAN YOU ARE??? absolutely adored this show and im ngl, i was really into the gaming parts of the show. after coming from go go squid, i actually think the show did a better job of balancing the romance and the gaming parts. i loved how the audience was able to actually "go" into the game - it made the show that much more dynamic. only thing i wished for was more of an exploration of lu yue, old k, old cat, and xiao pang. i disliked the whole "fatty" gimmick the entire show tbh and they included lu yue into the show only to discard him. old k and old cat were very interesting and i would've liked to see more of their friendship. i would've loved to see more team bonding moments or even just odd pairs like tong yao and old cat, or old k and lu yue, or xiao pang and xiao rui or yu ming. def wanted to see more of lee kun hyeok and lu si cheng because after all that business about light/shadow, they should've had more scenes together. they were very clearly friends, but idk. second couple ate down and i loved them! one thing this show did was deliever on the sismance and i ate up every crumb. jinyang holding up a sign for both tong yao and ai jia was SO CUTE and i really liked how they showed that, for her, there was no picking sides. she loved her boyfriend (and hubby omg??) and she loved her bestfriend and she would support and fight for both of them! love that she had her own career outside of ai jia - even if they were connected - and ai jia himself was adorable! this show was honestly so good, i really don't know why i was disinterested in watching it in the first place tbh. got a 8.5 rating from me tho ngl. i skipped the intro and outro every single time (Except for the last episode).

10. Voice of Silence - i rated this movie a 9/9.5 because it was excellent but i hated this movie. i hated the feeling it left me with (not even in a "omg this movie was so good at making me cry and hurt" type of feeling, but like it left me feeling out-of-sorts and really dark. i will never watch this movie again tbh, but i liked the concept. the dichotomy between evil and good in this movie really messed with me. i couldn't process anything in this movie because if i fr processed how messed up everything was, i don't think i would've been able to watch anything else for a minute.

11. Please Dont Save Me - absolutely adored this movie. it got a straight 9 from me. it was on my watchlist for a while tbh, but i never got around to it until like maybe 2 weeks ago. the innocent and pure love between the two child leads choked me up, but i especially liked how adult grief and child grief intermingle. it's such an interesting watch tbh and i wouldn't mind watching it again. PLEASE WATCH AFTER THE CREDITS, because if i didn't get to see seon yu and jeong guk eat ice cream after allat, i would've been in tears.

I imagine the utter shock Changyu must be experiencing after the big reveal. Imagine believing completely up until now that your husband needed / wanted you to take care of him and be the head of the house and provide for him and the family. Imagine being more than happy to step into that role, believing that you could provide this. That you had this thing that you could offer. For all of his higher education, intelligence, calligraphy skills, his good looks and martial arts capabilities, you could provide a stable income and a home.

“I can support you by butchering pigs. Come home with me. I will take care of you.”

It felt good to protect someone, care for someone and love someone who respected you for your abilities and did not seem intimidated by your profession or nonconformity to the gender norms.

All along, you also recognized that he was above your status and somehow out of your league, but you didn’t fully understand why or how. It was just a gut feeling. This man agreed to marry you for reasons of convenience, and you knew that there was more to him than meets the eye, but you did not have the full picture. All you knew was there was chemistry and affection there, and this man seamlessly settled into his role as your matrilineal husband and supported you fully in being who you were. You tended to his wounds, tried to give him an allowance, tried to protect his pride by sneakily giving him your money to pay for lunch. You could take care of him. You wanted to take care of him and he seemed to love and respect that about you. And this dynamic between the two of you defined your relationship.

And then imagine that many months into the marriage, at the end of a battle in which you could have died, you discover that your husband actually an incredibly powerful individual with extremely high status. He is very rich, has connections to the royal family AND commands an army of thousands of troops. Not only does he have martial arts capabilities, but he is also one of the best. And he never told you. You spent your entire relationship believing that he needed you to take care of him and protect him. And yet he never needed your money or your martial arts skills outside of a few times he was recovering from a critical injury and needed some help. He never needed you to take care of him in the way you thought he did.

The entire foundation of your relationship unraveled in the minutes it took for him to find you on the battlefield dressed in all of the splendor of a worshipped Marquis.

Talk about humiliating. You drugged this man to protect him from fighting. You accidentally suggested in front of a tent full of soldiers that he desert the army and go home with you so you could take care of him. You kidnapped a prisoner of war to get food for him to help him recover faster. And almost everyone else knew who he was except you. That shit fucking hurts. Not only is your relationship needing massive reconstruction now, there is now a significant differential in power. You went from being the head of the family and the provider to discovering that you are one of the lowest of social status compared to him. And you didn’t know.

Of course you’re going to be fucking pissed. Sad. Devastated. Afraid. Shocked. Betrayed. All of it.

Whatever his reasons were, he lied. And yet you still love him. That connection is still there. A part of you may come around someday to seeing that there was still genuineness and authenticity in his affection towards you, even if he didn’t share his identity. That yes - he lied about his identity, but not about his feelings for you. Maybe someday you’ll come to understand that the situation was not that black and white. That he was also in a difficult position when you initially saved him, and that he had to make some difficult decisions along the way. That he had an enormous amount of responsibility on his shoulders when he was injured and married a stranger, a stranger who needed this marriage to save her house. Perhaps he never expected the love to grow like it did, and that the situation became a lot more complicated after he began recognizing that the love was there. Perhaps it will become easier one day to see that he saved your little sister. Saved you a couple of times. That he wiped out the stronghold of the person who slaughtered your village and your lifelong friends. Maybe one day it will be easier to see that he had to balance the needs of the nation and the needs of his army with the wife that he loved. Maybe trying to walk that tightrope entailed deceiving you in the process, at least for a time, even though his intent was the opposite of wanting to cause you pain. Did he execute these plans perfectly? Absolutely not. He is human, after all. It fucking hurt like hell. He betrayed your trust. You’re justifiably angry. You’re understandably hurt. Of course you’re uncertain of what all of this means for the future. And you two have got some serious rebuilding to do.

Like this young person didn't even know about goddamn Gutenberg which is a SHAME. I linked to it and they went "aw yiss time to do a theft" and I was like "I mean yo ho ho and all that, sure, but. you know gutenberg is entirely legal, right?"

I was reviewing the list of the top 100 books downloaded yesterday and I saw a fair few that I had to read for college classes - so if you’re a college student and your professor assigns you to read Plato or any number of older works, check here before you buy a copy.

I reread the Anne series several years back - they were free through this.  I need to reread Pride and Prejudice at least once a year, and my e-book version is from this.  Someone recommended Jekyll and Hyde to me a few weeks back and I got a free copy from this.  When I went to Haworth on my last holiday before the plague times, I brought books by the Bronte sisters with me to read or reread that I downloaded from here.  It’s a great resource.

Yes yes yes! I was honestly so flabbergasted that this young person hadn't heard of the gutenberg project! It's been around for AGES, maybe longer than the kindle has? And it's such a huge project and wonderful resource! It used to be a household name (or maybe that's just my family, thanks to my dad being a cheapskate nerd [affectionate]). I was so glad to be able to share this resource and others with them though, and I wanted to make sure no one else was missing out!

If you look at the first reblog from me I also recommended a few other resources, most of which were from www.archive.org, home of the Wayback Machine! They run openlibrary.org, where you can check out ebooks of some public domain titles! They even have the Bone series by Jeff Smith!

And archive.org itself has all kinds of public domain media including music and movies! For Dracula fans, here's a radio show adaptation of the book, starring Orson Welles! And here's a 1920 movie adaptation of "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," starring John Barrymore, the grandfather of Drew Barrymore!

I'm so excited to see people falling in love with classic media through Dracula Daily! Let's keep that fire blazing!

lots of writers and publishers are prepared to waive future profits for entirely petty reasons

because of this the entire works of Philip K Dick [petty writer who found himself with lots of hangers on during his life] and HP Lovecraft [his publisher - who was his wife and hated him] became public domain on their death

Sherlock Holmes entered public domain this year, it's always worth checking because you can save a fortune

and the more popular the classic - the more likely someone has uploaded it

Found out in an interview Anthony Mackie shared he had no idea at the end of End Game he would be given the shield. He thought he was going to be killed off when asked about it from a writer. He says "Being black I assumed I was gonna get killed off."

And he was immediately worried and sad until they took him into a writing room to show him the script and to read the ending scene for the first time. To which he of course was ecstatic and over the moon happy losing it.

It definitely says a lot about why it's so important he got the role. Even as important his character is and how talented he is deep down he assumed he'd be killed off and no longer needed for the story. And instead was given the mantle! Taking up something like this so unexpectedly is insane and being able to step up and do it is even crazier

We need so many more and this is such a great addition
