I love Ally's flaws in her character, personally. The fact that she's unlikable makes her interesting.

If you want a likeable version of Ally McBeal then go to Spotify and listen to Calista Flockhart as Nora Helmer in A Doll's House.

Honestly the parallels are kind of incredible. Ally McBeal and A Doll's House are both feminist tales, except Ally (both the series and the character) is always grasping for that bold revelation that Nora has at the end of the play. But she never reaches it. She realizes that her husband is in love with her but never really loved her. He treats her like a doll.

One could argue that Billy does really love Ally, but with the way he's written it can't be ignored how sometimes he really does just treat her like an idea instead of a person. If that makes sense. I don't know
