Concept statement
The world is dying and we are past the point of no return; is what we are constantly told and it’s becoming increasingly hard to deny it. Nobody wants to blame themselves for a mistake they’ve made and that’s collectively what has happened in regards to the state of our world. You know what they say; ‘ignorance is bliss.’ When researching and carrying out experimentation for my work, I realised that all of the experiments were transformative, it was through my hands that irreversible effects were put on the copper I was working with. Copper starts out as this beautiful, shiny, metallic material, but it is so sensitive to change and you can leave marks on it so easily, it’s future entirely depends on you. I chose to continue working with copper after the last assessment for this purpose. In researching for further experimentation, I came across work by Australian artist Oliver Tanner. He works mainly with metals and is really able to capture the diversity and rhythm that a manipulated piece of metal can have (Oliver Tanner, 2017). I loved the flow that he was able to give the solid piece, which is what drew me to my final experiment for my last assessment. In the end though, it wasn’t the form that I found the most enticing, but the finish and the slowly changing effect I was able to give to the surface through heat treating. The induced aging of the metal is what lead me to find the world of patinas. A patina is a thin layer that generally forms on the surfaces of metals such as copper or brass through oxidisation as it ages. The surface colour is normally a sign of age and weathering and is the reason why objects like the Statue of Liberty appear that green-blue colour (“Patina,” 2017). Though usually a sign of age, the process can be accelerated through techniques like fuming, where you suspend the copper over an ammonia soaked cloth in a sealed container, and then what would normally take years or even decades can be done in a day (“copper patina | Evadesigns,” 2017).
The fact that it was my doing that left the marks on the copper to me felt really poignant. It was directly through my actions that the copper would no longer have any use other than the decorative object I sculpted it into. Although not directly, this is what we are doing to our world, as a result of increased pollution in production we are prematurely aging our planet. Ironically, copper has been a preferred building material for centuries because of its aging process, unlike other metals that rust with age and weathering, the patina that forms on the surface of the copper actually protects it from further erosion and damage (“Copper Facts,”). Copper oxidises quicker in areas of high pollution where there are a lot of contaminants in the air, creating an odd cycle; the unhealthier an environment, the tougher the copper becomes (Roofing, 2016). The copper sheet I chose to work with was thin, but it still had structural integrity, which made forming organic shapes hard. A rose although of the heartier varieties of flower is still delicate, it is momentary beauty before something inevitably causes its demise. The initial state of the copper sheet was much the same, it could be easily crushed, bent, cut and everything I did would leave a scar. It was only by destroying it that I saved it. In making the new old, it took away a lot of its initial beauty and appeal; it’s not shiny and it doesn’t have that desirable orange glow, but it will survive a lot longer because of that. In my rose, I created the perfect contradiction; aging usually leads to an end, but in prematurely aging my rose, I made it stronger and more likely to survive our in our dying world, which is dying because of us.

My first experiment with sculpting out of the copper sheet didn't go so well, I wasn't happy with the sharpness of the end form.
For another experiment I fumed a piece of copper that was sprayed with salt water, in a container with a rag soaked in ammonia. The patina formed over a couple of days. I really like the depth of this effect, it gives the copper texture and the illusion of growth.
Further experimentation; On the left I soaked the copper in a mixture of bleach and hot salt water. I left it there for a couple of hours, then took it out and let it air dry, the coconut developed more over the next couple of day to leave a pale blue/green. On the right the copper has been electroplated with some zinc, using tape to exclude areas.
Final experiment;
Our world is made up of constant interactions with the human and non-human and while our human interactions might be the most memorable, most of the things we see, touch and interact with are non-human. We create the world we want to live in and so we mould what is around us to suit our needs. Humans although flesh and blood seem hard as stone when it comes to moulding and yet it’s stone and metal that we carve and shape. At home, I have a copper pot, I don’t use it for cooking, but it sits next to the hob and over time the side facing the heat has slightly changed colour. This gave me an idea for my poster. I started experimenting with metals, heating some copper over a Bunsen burner and electroplating copper onto a piece of stainless steel. Reflecting on the experiments I really liked the colour range and depth of the heat-treated copper and that such a fast and simple procedure could leave such permanent marks. For my final experiment. I took a large piece of copper sheet (slightly smaller than A2) and I started scrunching it like a piece of paper, I then heated the new form with a blowtorch and when I was happy with the breadth of colours, I left it be. I intended that to be my final work, but I noticed over the next couple of days that it was changing, the once smooth gradient of colours was becoming harsher with edges like veins running through it. It was ageing. Our inability to mould people makes us grasp onto what we can change, and that tends to be the non-human, and its only after we have left the irreversible marks that we are able to catch ourselves giving them human qualities in an attempt to connect and justify our actions. We make a point of making everything around us part of the human environment.

Experiment 2;
I read online that you can permanently change the colour of metal by heating it. I used some scrap copper sheet I had and heated it over a Bunsen burner. The copper sheet came with a plastic film on one side, so I peeled it off excluding some circles to see if it would make it stay true to its original colour. I was surprised with how quickly it worked and after doing the first piece I saw that the oil residue from my finger and left a finger print, so for the second piece I put a number of finger prints of the copper before heating it.

Experiment 1;
In my first experiment I electroplated copper on to a piece of stainless steel. I achieved this by putting each piece of metal in a jug of dissolved copper sulphate, with each piece connected to a power box. Using a piece of sticky tape I created a negative space in the middle of the copper coating. I really liked the contrast created through this technique, the shiny stainless steal and the rusty appearance the copper gave.
Week 3- creating a poster, a drawing with no traditional drawing tools and a creative structure out of a piece of paper.
