“Even I have to admit I’d rather deal with this than King Henry.” She commented, shuttering a little at the thought. “They would probably say it’s to help build character, but I’m pretty sure we all have enough to last us.” Ari knew that she did. “I’d honestly rather be paired with someone that I at least know than a stranger. I mean, I don’t know if I know him that much anymore, but you know what I mean?” Ari and Charlie had grown a part over the years, and she honestly didn’t know much about him except the basics. Ari laughed a little at the girls question before answering. “Cultural Studies.” She answered. “And you?”

“I dated someone like King Henry, and I would completely agree.” Izzie joked and nodded along with the other girl. “Everyone I’ve met on campus is great, full of character and life experiences. I think because this is a private school and they can do whatever they want with little consequences, it’s more of a social experiment in disguise. Or I guess that’s what I’m hoping.” Izzie said with a small smile. “Yeah. I’m paired with a stranger and it’s...wild. I still don’t know anything about him,” she admitted. “So I guess you did get lucky there.” she pointed out, taking another sip from her drink. “Social work. Gotta help those women.” Izzie said. “what made you do cultural studies?”

Listening to the other girl, Ari was quiet, giving a bit of a side eye as she just hadn’t turned her head. However, the more she spoke, her head moved and tilted a bit. “Ari.” She introduced simply before shaking her head. “Not particularly. My partner is someone I used to be friends with who has pretty grown up to be everything I fight against.” She answered. “Besides, the idea of being forced to be fake married to someone for absolutely no reason at all just seems like some giant form of torture.”

“I agree that the idea of being forced to marry someone is far outdated and should be left to people like King Henry but college is out to ruin us once more.” Izzie joked but frowned a little. “I’m sorry you got a partner that you don’t like though. I’d switch with you if I could but I don’t know much about my partner if I'm being honest. I just want to get this class over with and move on and graduate.” Izzie still had a couple years to go but as long as she got this class over and done with, the next few years should fly by, right? “So Ari, here’s the age old question. What’s your major?”

Ari had the chance to sneak away from her partner while he was chatting some other girls at the party. It was a reminder to her on why they wouldn’t ever work, something she kept trying to convince that voice in her head that felt like asking what if. She kept her distance from everyone, eyes judging those walking around her as she questioned how they could even be okay with any of this. When someone approached her and starting talking about the experiment, she sighed before responding. “Look, if you’re looking for someone to talk about how great spending a year being fake married to someone is going to be, I’m not it.” She told the before pointing to a place in the room. “I would recommend that gaggle of giggling students towards the front of the room.”

“Me? Talk about how great it is?” Izzie snorted a little and grabbed a cup and filled it with some snacks before turning to the girl. “You’re talking to the girl who has officially given up on commitment so no talk like that here. I don’t know my partner so I don’t really have an opinion on whether that's good or bad but as for the commitment side?” Izzie shook her head. “I just came over here to get away from the heat a little.” she explained. “and vent about how my partner is nowhere to be found so I’m here dancing for myself.” she said and smiled. “I’m Izzie by the way. And I take it, you don’t really wanna be here?”

Maya couldn’t help but to giggle a little as she watched Izzie play with her dress, knowing it was like a little puffy cloud. Although, when Izzie mentioned running into her ex, Maya furrowed her eyebrows, soon looking through the crowd before back at Izzie. “You’ve got to be kidding me. Are you serious? You saw him, here?” Maya almost exclaimed, but tried to keep quiet to not draw as much attention to their conversation. Shaking her head, she let out a breath and smiled at her friend, “Tonight is for fun only! And I, personally, am going to make sure of that.” She wanted to be there for her friend, and if it was getting her mind off a certain someone, she was going to do all in her power to make sure of it.

“Yeah...I mean it took me a minute to recognize him. I haven’t seen him in five years.” Izzie said and pointed to Dakota off in the distance. “But it’s fine. I mean...I’ll be fine.” Izzie said and kissed the girl’s head as a promise. “I don’t want to think about it so there’s no point in worrying.” She said and waved her hand as if the thoughts were already forgotten. Izzie smiled a little and took another drink of her punch before grabbing Maya’s hand. “We should dance. If we’re going to have fun at this thing, then dancing is the key. Everyone else looks far too miserable.” Izzie joked and led Maya out to the dance floor.

Dakota could feel his heart pounding in his chest and pulsing in parts of his body that he shouldn’t have been able to feel it. His fingers curled tightly into fists, the longer her felt the liquid seeping into fabric as he watched the stranger move along with the crowd. He noticed the second someone else was at his side, but if there wasn’t a little release he was going to unload onto the wrong person. So instead he did what made the most sense for him in the moment, picking up the mostly empty cup, crushing it between his fingers and throwing it in the general direction of the man who had hit him. In hindsight he was lucky that it hadn’t in turn hit someone else, but it sure as hell didn’t hit his target with how quickly he’d been walking. “Dammit, dammit dammit!” He shouted again, momentarily forgetting about the girl who had approached until she was offering to buy him a new drink. “You know, suddenly I don’t know if I’m super thirsty.” He muttered as he pulled off his shoe that was soaked with blue liquid. “You wouldn’t happen to have napkins on you though would you?”

“Not on me, there’s nowhere to keep them on me in this dress but i think the food tables may have some.” Izzie said and turned to go get them but as she turned she got a good glimpse, finally, of the man in front of her and her whole body froze. Everything inside of her seized up and she couldn’t help but feel a little sick. She had worked so hard at keeping everything inside but with the image of him in front of her, it was like her walls were cracking a little. She hadn’t expected to ever see him again and honestly it was like her heart was breaking all over again. Izzie shook her head and took a deep breath. She grabbed napkins and quickly gave them to him before turning away. “You know, I feel a little sick all of a sudden, I’m going to go get some fresh air. I’m really sorry about your pants.” Izzie said and she turned straight to the door and just hoped he didn’t see her. The last thing she wanted to do was get sick all over her reception dress and in the middle of everyone dancing so she just decided to leave for a few minutes. If he hadn’t recognized her, then it was for the best.

maya used the excuse of the wedding reception to finally get a chance to wear a beautiful red dress, knowing she looked good and feeling the confidence pour from her body. she hadn’t seen her partner around just yet, but she wasn’t entirely looking either. sure, it was a grade, but the thought of it was weird for her. she would much rather hang out with her best friends, getting a few drinks and just living life, not paired up with someone she barely knew. when she saw izzie, maya let out a sigh of relief, a bright smile brought to her features. “oh my god!” maya exclaimed, looking at her outfit and then back at her. “this dress is stunning, izzie!” maya pushed some of her hair behind her ear as she looked at one of her best friends, “no- i haven’t seen him here just yet, but… is your partner around?”

“Isn’t it?” Izzie asked and grinned as she twirled around. “So is yours. I mean you look absolutely stunning Maya, seriously.” Izzie said and swatted the dress a little, playfully. She was so glad that, even though they were all really hurt, the Politician had brought them all together because she couldn’t imagine living her life without them now. “No, I haven’t seen him since this school year started. Who knows where he is, honestly.” Izzie said and rolled her eyes. “You know who I did see? My ex-boyfriend from high school. The one who said he wanted to marry me and then ghosted right after we had sex?” Izzie said and shook her head. “I felt like I was going to be sick. I still feel like it but I’ve been trying to have fun regardless.” Izzie said. “This night is a night to have fun and relax not get all worked up, right?”

Out of all the girls in the house together, Izzie’s favorite, and she wouldn’t even admit to it if you had a gun to her head, was Phoebe. Phoebe was so kind and took care of everyone and Izzie did her best to take care of her too. And she just loved her so much so when she saw her at the dance she walked over and beamed down at her. “Phoebe! You look so good.” she said. “Finn ‘round? You guys dance or anything yet?”

Honestly, Izzie didn’t know what she was doing here. Her partner was nowhere to be found and there was no point to it but a dance was a dance and she didn’t know who would show up. Plus couldn’t she be here with her best friends dancing just for herself? She thought so. So when she saw Maya, she ran over and grinned down at her. “Look at you! Look how amazing you look!” she said. “Is your partner around?”

It hadn’t always been like this. That feeling of heat just beneath the surface. Like a ketal that had been sitting on the stove for just a little too long and any moment was about to blow its lid. In fact if he thought back hard enough, he could remember a time when things felt okay. Normal even. But every day those times felt further and further away and the lines between an acceptable level of anger, and out of control were starting to blur. This was especially the case when all it took was one stray arm to completely cause him to lose his Baja Blast not only all over the concrete but completely down the bottom of his pant leg and into one of his shoes. “Jesus christ are you fucking kidding me?” He shouted as he turned towards the stranger who was already walking away. His firsts curled tightly until he noticed the few pairs of eyes that had stopped to notice the scene. “It’s fine I’d been meaning to dye these socks blue for a while now asshole!”

Izzie had just been watching this whole situation happen from the corner where she had been just reading something on her phone, having missed some texts while she was in class. When she saw the drink fall, she couldn’t take her eyes off of the poor man it fell all over and she couldn’t help but feel a bit sorry for him. After the guy just walked away, Izzie couldn’t help but shake her head. “Some people, man. They just don’t have any tolerance for other human beings.” She said and walked over to the man. “You okay? I mean obviously your socks and pants are wet but are you, as a person, okay?” Normally she wouldn’t offer her help to another male, especially because often times she was seen as being flirtatious and suggestive when she was just being kind, but she couldn’t help herself in the moment. It seemed unfortunate. “I'll buy you a new soda to make up for it?”

She had needed this night, the idea of this whole program had completely ruined her night. She didn’t know her partner and she didn’t really care but the idea of the whole course seemed exhausting. “What even is that drink?” she asked curiously

it took a moment or two for gabe to realise that it wasn’t, in fact, some random stranger, but his cousin laughing at him from a distance, and he felt a faint sense of shame for his reaction. izzie was one of the few people in his life that he gave a flying fuck about, but she was used to his temper tantrums and he just rolled his eyes as she stole his cigarette from him. “you want one of your own?” he asked as he took it back, taking a long, satisfying drag from it and exhaling slowly. he replied to her question as he dug around for the packet in one pocket. “late shift plus ruth having nightmares, and no one round this fucking campus knows how to keep their goddamn mouth shut,” gabe grumbled, finally finding the packet to offer to izzie. “not gonna tell you to beat it, but at least keep your voice down if you’re gonna stick around.” to anyone else, it would probably sound gruff, rude, but there was an edge of fondness to his tone that was reserved only for those closest to him.

“No, I just wanted to steal yours for a second.” She said and smiled innocently back at him, shoving his hand away gently when he offered her one. “You know, if you have that big of a headache maybe you should go back to your dorm instead of being in the middle of a busy campus on its first day of school?” she suggested, an eyebrow raised at her own suggestion. She didn’t know why he complained sometimes about the situations he was in if he put himself in them. “You wouldn’t tell me to beat it anyways. You love me too much.” She said and pulled out her phone to look at it before putting it away and then leaning back to get comfortable. “Ruth’s having nightmares again?”

“he doesn’t want to bang you,” the tiny girl’s lips moved a mile a minute, talking to another girl that she was supposed to be hanging out with that day— of course,plans had changed as soon as her lips moved. she didn’t mean to say the sentence so …loudly, but maya couldn’t help herself from trying to prove her friend wrong. “i’m sorry!” maya tried to let out as she saw her friend gathering their things and leaving, leaving maya alone in the area. letting out a sigh, maya made eye contact with another in the area, a sheepish smile on her lips. “i totally fucked that up, didn’t i?”

Izzie watched the sad interaction from the side, a laugh trying not to pass her lips as the other girl got up and walked away. “Maya.” Izzie said and shook her head as her friend turned back to her. “I love you, and even I can be sarcastic and harsh sometimes, but I think you let your mouth speak before your brain catches up sometimes.” She said and picked up a carrot stick from her lunch tray and took a quick bite of it. It was crazy how a few months ago these girls didn’t know each other but getting cheated on brought them all together. “Sometimes you just gotta lie to people. I know, coming from me that’s a big shock but..” Izzie shrugged a little and took another bite.

all gabe wanted was a quiet cigarette, but the campus wasn’t generally quiet at this time of day, and finding a corner to stand and smoke when every other person wanted to give you the evils for such a thing was next to impossible these days. he’d tried the whole vaping thing for about ten minutes, but it wasn’t the same to him - the feel of the cigarette between his fingers was half the comfort, as much as he hated it about himself. add to that his lighter wasn’t working, and gabe was starting to become pretty agitated. he could feel a pair of eyes on him and he scowled, not looking up as he tried his lighter again, to no avail. “you wanna take a fucking picture, or you wanna leave before i shove this down your throat?”

“Wow, Gabriel. If you talk to your cousin that way I can’t imagine how you talk to anyone else.” Izzie said mockingly, coming to sit next to him. She stole the cigarette out of his hands, lit it up and took a drag before handing it back. She had been watching him in amusement, trying to light that damn lighter before deciding to come over. “I just saw you and thought that you could use some familial bonding time but if I was wrong, please feel free to correct me and I’ll willingly leave.” Izzie said with a small smile, nudging him a little. “But seriously, what’s got you in such a sour mood?”

HISTORY

When Izzie was 13, she absolutely loved music so she had a music teacher who she would see every week. She absolutely loved this music teacher and he definitely loved her back but one day things changed. That love the teacher had for her turned into a different kind of love and Izzie’s life was forever changed. What happened, happened a few times before Izzie decided to speak up. The music teacher was immediately fired and he went to jail but Izzie’s life and mind and body were changed.

After that, she had a hard time trusting anyone. But when she was 16 she met a boy who said all the right things. He did all the right things. He made her trust again. They talked about marriage after high school and about their lives in the future but all that changed when she slept with him. He completely ghosted her and left her in heartbreak and with another feeling of being used.

She took a break from boys, but then she got to college and met another guy who promised her the world. Maybe it was just her hope that things could work in the name of love but she decided to give it a chance. She was older now, wiser or so she thought. She trusted him and it turned out he was dating five other girls behind her back. She was absolutely crushed. She went crying to a friend’s house that night about it, the night he spilled the news to her, and it was fine for a little but then the friend thought it would be a good idea to admit feelings for her, tell her she was worth everything but then proceed to try to get her to have sex with him, and not very gently either. Before he could really do anything, she pushed him off and kicked him out. The last thing she wanted was to be used again.

Now, she refuses to believe that love exists for her, as people often just see her as flirty and end up using her. She still does come off that way but when things get too close to being too far she promptly lets them know where the line is. She’s just trying to focus on school, deciding on a career in social work to prevent what happened to her to anyone else,

CONNECTIONS

“The HBIC”, “The Drama Queen”, “The Survivor”, “The Mom Friend”, “The Warrior” - They all were dating The Politician at the same time, After things ended and they all found out, they all became close. They rented a house together instead of living on campus and are all roommates and best friends.

“The Politician” - She hadn’t wanted to date him in the first place but he was so inviting and she thought dating someone like him was going to be a good thing. She’d get a lot out of it but instead she just got her heart broken. He was just like all the other men who had come her way. After everything that happened with him though, it kind of catapulted her into who she is today.

“The Dirtbag” - These two are cousins and despite both of their difficult lives, having each other in them was a constant good thing. They grew up right around the corner from each other so they were always spending time together and no matter what was going on in their lives, they knew they could turn to each other. When it came to college it wasn’t even a question on if they would go together.

“The Addict” - She doesn’t really know who he is but Izzie is determined just to get out of this with an A. Commitment isn’t her thing anymore and she doesn’t think she should be forced to do it with a complete stranger but she’s pretty apathetic when it comes to the male she’s paired with.
