Countdown to The Last of Us Part II: ELLIE AND JOEL
“In the first game she’s trying to find someone to rely on. She tells Joel that ‘everyone I’ve ever known has died or left me, everyone except for you.’ She kind of latches onto Joel.” […] “[In the beginning of the Last of Us Part II] their relationship is strained. Some of it is because teenagers will be teenagers, and some of it is because of their history, which is why you haven’t seen them together a lot. So much of The Last of Us is about this duo and their dynamic and how they are together, how they play together.” ― Neil Druckmann, creative director
“The game is very much about Joel and Ellie’s relationship, and the evolution of their relationship. In the first game, Ellie’s 14, he becomes a dad, he’s very much in control of the situation, he knows what’s right and what’s best for her. A lot of the story is what it is to have a relationship with a kid who’s growing up, who’s becoming independent, who wants to make her own choices and makes those choices whether you like it or not. He’s also growing up, and also maturing.” ― Halley Gross, narrative lead

Countdown to The Last of Us Part II: ELLIE AND DINA
“Dina lived in Jackson before Ellie moved in at the end of the first game. Once Ellie moves into Jackson, we’re picking up the story years later, Dina has become Ellie’s best friend. And they’re part of this crew that go out on these patrols. They hang out, Jackson has electricity [so] they watch movies. They live a teenage life. And not only that, these characters have been very flirty with each other, and now that Dina’s single, the demo you saw at E3 [2018], we saw this festival where the two characters kissed for the first time… where we’re coming in for [the new demo], Ellie’s not sure where Dina stands.” […] “It was important for us to show the complexity of that relationship. It’s these really sweet, tender moments of levity, to show how capable Dina is.” ― Neil Druckmann, creative director
