reunions.
aloerin:
her eyes rolled with a spectacular disdain as she recalled the last of her pokemon, stuffed the ball into her back pack and turned her head. “i can’t believe it. here i thought you’d at least run off to do something different with your life, something you couldn’t do in unova, but instead …” she scoffed, teeth gritting, molars grinding,  hurt sparking in the back of dark eyes. “anyway give me my fucking badge, joon.”Â
when joon left unova, he doused all his bridges with oil and threw a lighter behind him without a moments hesitation. there was one bridge he lingered on for a split second, though, flicking the lighter on and off -- tense fist hovering over a familiar door -- before he lowered it and threw the lighter, rolling his luggage onto a boat without ever looking back. well, except for watching the occasional (read: all) vlog or two. he had cut off all contact though, with his family, with her, with all his friends, and started new on alola. as new as he could, anyway, because he still ended up on the familiar path of battling the league and becoming the gym leader he would have ended up being back on unova. some habits never die, he learned.
and he learned it again one month ago when she had made it to the top of the volcano. he felt like he was eighteen all over again, eyes widening, mouth hanging open while his every word got stuck at the tip of his tongue until he recomposed himself, clearing his throat and stumbling through his welcome message. he was all too happy for the battle to start because, aside from his arcanine wagging his tail rapidly and tackling erin the moment he was summoned out of his pokĂ©ball, at least it delayed the awkward reunion. at least it gave him time to gather himself again through a fiery battle that ended in his favor with a cocky grin on his lips and a, “maybe next time, erin.” although that was weird, too, that there was a next time when five years ago he was so sure he’d gotten rid of all those.Â
he was wrong, though. so, very wrong. because there were plenty of next times that led up to this moment of annoyance playing in the quirk of his brow, in the bitter laugh as he called his fainted darumaka back into her ball and clipping it onto his belt. he could hear the hurt in her words, could feel it in the twist of his chest, but there was nothing he could do or say to ease it. so, instead, he picked at it even more. “what, this?” he paused, eyes trained on hers, feet stepping slowly towards her as he gestured around the arena, “this isn’t something i could’ve done in unova. too many people i couldn’t stand breathing down my neck for me to live peacefully there.” his eyes flickered away from hers for a brief moment before he stopped in his tracks a few steps away, sliding his hand into his jeans pocket to fish out a shiny new fire badge. “oh, you want this thing?” he scoffed, slipping his free hand into his pocket while he flipped the badge into the air with his other. “i don’t know,” he started, catching the badge mid-air and bringing it up to his face as if to examine it closer before stuffing it back into his pocket and leveling his gaze back at her with a crooked smile, “i think you just got lucky today. maybe next time.”Â
