Childhood made everything feel like it lingered. The time it took for hot chocolate to cool down was eternal. Christmas day took weeks. The two-hour drive to my grandparents' house took us to a new world. It's all too fast now.

[Text ID: I am convinced that most people do not grow up. We find parking spaces and honor our credit cards. We marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. I think what we do is mostly grow old. We carry accumulation of years in our bodies and on our faces, but generally our real selves, the children inside, are still innocent and shy as magnolias. We may act sophisticated and worldly but I believe we feel safest when we go inside ourselves and find home, a place where we belong and maybe the only place we really do.]

i'm sorry it still hurts to look at you. i'm sorry i still think you're mine -
There is something in your throat that wants to get out and you won’t let it.

Small Gods
How many gods of small things have we lost
to the sands of time and the march of progress?
How many have been lost
because they have no great temples?
How many gods of small things
of hearth and sewing and lost things
were taken from us?
We know the name of Hestia
but she had no great stories given to her.
Mother of the hearth
only known to us because she was said
to have given her seat
to carefree Dionysus.
How many gods of small things have we lost
to destruction and defacement?
How many were forgotten
because they did not command the sky
or the sea
or death itself?
How many gods of small things
of summer dew and sweets
and little streams
known only to their village
were taken from us?
Loki was not the god of mischief.
We know not
why he was prayed to.
But one must wonder
why someone would ask a backbiter,
a spider,
the mother and father of monsters
to guard your children
with an offering of milk teeth
cast into the fires of the life giving hearth.
