Pope on a pancake, people.. I feel like this comes up every week. And I’ve made about 1,000 posts on this, so let’s make it 1,001.
Things people are okay with:
Wanting to play an antagonist.
Wanting to write dark/horrific topics.
Wanting to engage with other people who enjoy or wish to write about dark and horrific topics.
Posting dark/horrific/antagonistic writings onto your private media such as tumblr.
Enjoying the emotional scope of RP from happy to extreme sad/fear/pain.
Being more drawn to horror or dark themes.
Saying IC =/= OOC in genuine instances of bleeding during consenting and agreed upon RP situations.
Things people are not okay with:
Forcing what you find fun onto other RPers who don’t want it.
Using tired catch phrases like IC =/= OOC at inappropriate times to justify your actions when someone was upset that you forced a plot on them that they didn’t want.
Engaging people in heavy/horror/dark without consent OOCly.
Avoiding consequences for playing a dark character. No, just saying you accept them and then never actually accepting them does not count.
Belittling other RPers for choosing to play happy/fluff/light RP.
Belittling other RPers for avoiding your antagonist.
I know this topic will exist until the end of goddamn time flooded with someone saying “IC =/= OOC” and the drove of “SAY IT LOUDER FOR THE PEOPLE IN THE BACK” reblogs but for the life of me I can not fathom where this ravenous fantasy evolved that Dark RPers are this persecuted species.
I know and engage several EXTREMELY dark writers. They are some of the best goddamn storytellers I know. Their characters are full on antagonistic and they are brilliant. I adore them OOCly too, and even if I avoid some of their writings due to the topic I still respect them as does the community. You just don’t often hear about these people because they RP properly and with respect and courtesy for their fellow writers.
Every instance of people lathering the ‘IC =/= OOC’ argument up, it always seems to come back to someone ignoring the wishes of a fellow RPer to do what they wanted to do because ‘I’m an antagonist, I’m going to be evil and you just gotta deal with that’.
The reason antagonist RPers have such bad reputations is -not- the server and it’s ‘inherent dislike of poor antagonist RPers’. It’s you, the folks who want to do whatever they want and expect ‘IC =/= OOC’ to cover your ass every time, the ones who give -all- antagonists a terrible goddamn name. Because there are fantastic antagonists out there who have to fight every day to show they are respectful and courteous RPers due to the actions of a few very ostentatious idiots.
And to you decent antagonists out there, we know who you are and we still love you. You’re doing brilliant things. Keep up the good work, and keep showing this server that antagonist RP can and does go hand in hand with being a kind and respectful RPer OOCly.
