Thors Helmet Emission Nebula : This helmet-shaped cosmic cloud with wing-like appendages is popularly called Thorâs Helmet. Heroically sized even for a Norse god, Thorâs Helmet spans about 30 light-years across. In fact, the helmet is more like an interstellar bubble, blown as a fast wind â from the bright star near the center of the bubbleâs blue-hued region â sweeps through a surrounding molecular cloud. This star, a Wolf-Rayet star, is a massive and extremely hot giant star thought to be in a brief, pre-supernova stage of evolution. Cataloged as NGC 2359, the emission nebula is located about 12,000 light-years away toward the constellation of the Big Dog (Canis Major). The sharp image, made using broadband and narrowband filters, captures striking details of the nebulaâs filamentary gas and dust structures. Some 4,200 light years away near in the direction of our galactic core, in the constellation Scorpius (The Scorpion) a giant has come to life.
This region known as RCW-120 (as well as a few other cataloged names listed below) is an H-II star forming region and emission nebula 10 light years across (59 trillion miles). The star cataloged as CGO 439 is an âO8 Vâ type star and in fact itâs the largest âOâ type star known.
Over time this star will become very bright and possibly a prominent member of the southern night sky.
One of the most defining features of an Altean is their markings, showing the natural flow of Quintesence and Altean Energy around an Altean body. Regardless of how much Altean blood one has, they have some form of faded marking, a full blooded Altean typically have some sort of marking all across their body.Â
For a full blooded Altean, the most common pattern for markings resemble roots or vines, spreading out across the surface of their skin. However, these markings are considered the least effective for the transportation of Quintesence, Alteans with deep connections to Altean Energy and Quintesence tend to have straighter markings, resembling the lines of a microchip, allowing Quintesence to flow effectively throughout their bodies.
Having âsetsâ of markings is also common. For example, Coran has three sets of markings, the first set covers his arms, left shoulder and upper back (purple line), the second set covers right shoulder, upper torso, lower back and right leg (orange line) and the final set covers his left leg and lower back (green line). Alteans with a single set of markings are often ones who can power and use Teluduvs and other high Quintesence demanding technologies.Â
Markings are also typically raised, about the thickness of a piece of paper, off the skin and even covers over scarred skin, continuing its path along the body.
Throughout an Alteans life, the markings will rarely change shape without the aid of their shape shifting abilities. The phenomenon has only been recorded a handful of times and itâs believed to be linked to direct and prolonged exposure to certain types of Quintesence.Â
What is not rare is the fading of marking colouration; as an Altean ages, the markings start to fade and lose their vividness. For elderly Alteans it can be used as a marker to suggest how long one has left but, should an Altean die of non-natural causes (sickness, accident, murder, etc.) their markings will suddenly lose colouration.
Other than showing the flow of Quintesence through an Altean, the markings serve other evolutionary advantages, for example, their luminescence creatures a form of Countershading, obstructing their silhouette, making it harder for predators and prey to spot them. Another use is the idea that they used to be used as bait, much like how an deep sea Anglerfish uses their illicium to lure prey towards them by dazzling them in the dark.
However, itâs common and typically expected for Alteans to keep their markings underwraps and out of sight. But, before its destruction, Altea was starting to accept the idea of markings being on display, although it was mainly enforced by the populations youth and commoners. Many Aristocrats and the ruling class werenât as forward thinking.Â
