Did You Hear? || Alecto & Lily

Putting her spoon down, she gave a quick wave and the ice cream was both topped and put back in the freezer. Her Hogwarts years were blissful, and though there was some unpleasant memories coloured in, she could hardly complain. Sometimes she missed them, but then, she liked being an adult and moving on to bigger things more. Lily put her chin on her fist as she listened closely. There was a lot she didn’t know about Alecto, and if the woman was willing to share with her, she was open to listen. The stark differences between their lives was devastating, and Lily was once again reminded why they were fighting this particular fight. She thought of Remus, and how his life would likely had been just as lonely had it not been for James Potter, of all the people. Lily couldn’t imagine what it had been like for Alecto, and so she wouldn’t. She wouldn’t pretend to understand something that she’d never come close to experiencing. “You don’t have to apologize Alecto, especially not to me. You’ve got every reason to be upset. You were handed the worst cards, made something great of them, and still had them thrown back in your face. I don’t know how you handle it as well as you do. Your emotions are valid, so please, know that you’re safe to feel them here” she spoke, hoping that it held some semblance of reassurance. This was a conversation that would stay between them.
She hadn’t meant to spill the contents of her soul upon the table, desperately trying to sop it up with her bare hands once it was already pooling there on the wood. Lily was someone she could trust, she knew that and maybe that’s why the words had come out so easily. Talking about her past, her life, had never been a strong suit and expressing her emotions was even more difficult. Her entire life had been about suppression, fear and control, but taking back her power meant opening up to people and if she could find a friend ( a real friend) in Lily she’d be forever grateful for the strength it took to admit to all of that. The fact Lily understood, the analogy she made, helped settle Alecto’s hummingbird heartbeat. “Handle it well?” She laughed as she swiped away the tears she’d let fall. “I basically bottle it all up until---until something like this happens.” She felt exasperated but took deep breaths t reground herself. “I know, I know that and I just---everything is getting so much worse. It’s supposed to be better, we are supposed to be making it better. What are even doing? We’re sitting on our hands, tails between our legs---metaphorically speaking. What is Remus doing?”
