my take on sbial because i have only seen one side or the other (spoilers ahead):
SO. sbial is definitely a movie that i watched and loved, and then thought about it and didnāt like it as much.
my problem, is that itās out there. i mean there are some things in it that shouldnāt have made the cut. but then again, these are teenagers. not every single person is woke or aware of what they say/do. it sounds unrealistic in this day and age but itās true.
the trans remark? happens a lot more than you think. mocking lesbians? also happens very frequently. iām so glad people are calling out the director and author for the promotion of slander, but people need to see this. they need to see what REALLY is said to some people. this kind of uproar needs to happen more often, but we need to call out non-fiction people too. hold real people accountable as well as made up plots.
the switch kissing scene? NOT my cup of tea. will never be my choice of any beverage. jamey didnāt consent to sierra kissing him, he consented to veronica. as i said before, theyāre teens. acting in the moment isnāt something thatās completely out of the window. we all do it. granted, it SUCKED that this was the āin the momentā scene, and consent shouldnāt be an in the moment thing for young adults and they should know that itās important by then, but at the time veronica thought she was doing something good for a friend.
the catfishing? out of line and a terrible decision on sierraās part. she shouldāve told jamey that he had the wrong number, or explained who she really was. but i can understand where sheās coming from. i havenāt catfished anyone, but it came to my mind in some circumstances. i was the ugly kinda chubby girl. i was never anyoneās choice. am i a completely different person than the one i was in high school? by a thousand percent. i donāt think like that anymore because i know what iām worth. sierra is just like the past me. sheās been nobodyās romantic choice for a long time. sheās told that sheās nothing compared to the success of her parents, and she believes it. when she gets a text from a cute unknown boy, she takes the chance because now someone has finally taken interest. she didnāt know he had the wrong number until he called her veronica. should she have told him then? absolutely. did he say he liked her for her? yea. but she didnāt believe it because he had veronicaās face plastered on her personality. she was scared that sheād lose that one interest, and that she wouldnāt find anyone again. so she took a stupid chance.
the veronica exposing mess? horrible fucking move, and a shitty friend. she thought that veronica would be hurting the same way sierra was. in reality, this almost cost veronica a LOT if not everything. sierra was just ignorant with this move tbh. iām sorry but with this one, i canāt see how she wouldnāt think posting it would cause the same harm as veronica kissing a boy who didnāt know he was being catfished.
in conclusion: sierra burgess is a loser has me confused so much. i donāt know if i like the film, or dislike it. jamey and veronica shouldnāt have forgiven sierra THAT fast. she should have had to work hard to earn their trust and friendship/relationship back. the movie had realistic aspects, and aspects that were so far out there that if it was realistic then iād be a lil scared. none of this is me trying to justify their bad actions, iām just trying to explain why they might think theyāre doing something decent or normal.
