When I was 13, I spent a bunch of time arguing with adult anti vaxxers. Which is why I really do believe that people should not treat 13 year olds like toddlers. I will take your sources into consideration.

I use to be a pro-vaxxer, too. I don’t like when people treat me like I’m somebody who can’t think for themselves. I’ve spent countless hours studying vaccination after my sister died from the HPV vaccine.

The 5 Steps To Stopping Dog Shots

As a society, we’ve become addicted to vaccinations. Adults, kids, dogs, fish. No one is exempt.

Why this profound attachment to them exists and why we think they’re such a necessary part of preventive health is mostly based on fiction rather than fact. Everywhere you turn you’re bombarded with information about how your dog needs annual or tri-annual vaccinations to protect her from disease. And almost all of what you hear in the mainstream media is myth.

Uncovering what is fact and what is fiction isn’t always easy for anyone, including veterinarians.

Sometimes I wonder if we need a self-help program, maybe a 5-step program to recover from this addiction.

But first, let’s break down and bust those myths.

Myth #1: Vaccines saved the world.

Fact: Vaccines actually help spread disease.

Pro-vaccinators are often quick to use this as the first argument to claim why vaccines are so great. Polio and smallpox are the first examples quickly cited as being exterminated from the planet only because vaccines were used.

That’s just not the truth.

For example, the polio vaccine campaign began in 1955, at least three years after the polio disease peaked. I repeat: after the peak of natural polio. Every disease has a life cycle – a rhythm that coincides with other natural cycles such as the time of the year (the flu is a good example of a winter disease), or life cycles (puppyhood vs adulthood).

For polio, there had already been a natural, cyclical decline in active cases when the vaccine was distributed to the masses. The medical profession used fear and social pressure through mass marketing to push vaccinations even though the vaccines were shedding the virus, increasing the number of actual cases of polio. The same practices continue today with many vaccines. And it’s no different for parvo, distemper, feline leukemia or other pet vaccines.

Myth #2: Vaccines are safe, harmless and effective.

Fact: Vaccines are not safe. Never have been and probably never will be.

This myth really gets people marching their animals, kids and themselves to the doctors, vets, pharmacies, pet stores – and now even the airport for their vaccinations! The airport? Yes, before you hop on that flight get your flu shot! The message conveyed is that the immune protection is immediate and you’ll be protected from germ carrying passengers on the plane.

That’s also pure fiction.

The immune reaction to most vaccines requires at least a week.

The other implied message is the vaccines are so safe you don’t have to think about it or discuss it with a trained medical provider. You just pop into a kiosk and you’re good to go.

The other wing of the fictitious premise of the safe, harmless and effective myth is dispelled when we look for long-term studies. There have been no long-term clinical trials to support the above claims. And those clinical trials (double blind, etc), also called evidence based science, just don’t exist for vaccinations!

As far as adverse reactions are concerned, many are reported, but many others are overlooked. Immediate reactions within 48 hours are the only ones considered actually causal from the vaccination. Long-term chronic reactions are rarely considered a result of or even associated with the vaccinations. But you pet owners know exactly what I’m referring to. You know your dog was healthy before them and not after.

Even the US Supreme Court has called vaccines “unavoidably unsafe.” They set up and funded The Vaccine Injury Compensation Program to help folks with medical bills. Even though this is a drop in the bucket it says a lot about how the government actually views vaccines. And honestly, even all those negative reactions aside, how can dog shots be safe when they contain these really harmful ingredients?

Aluminum – Aluminum is a Class 3 (out of 4) carcinogen (meaning cancer-causing). It crosses the blood-brain barrier like mercury, leaving the brain susceptible to inflammation and even cancer. Aluminum and mercury combined in the body (and in vaccines) are much more toxic together than separately. It also makes your dog more susceptible to all kinds of allergies – skin issues, inhalant allergies, anaphylaxis and even death.

Mercury – Thimerosal is a mercury-based vaccine additive that’s known to be a direct neurotoxicant and studies have shown that it can increase the risk of serious neurological disorders. It may also be an immuno-toxicant, leaving the immune system vulnerable to pathogenic microbes.

Formaldehyde – Formaldehyde is added to vaccines to inactivate any bacterial products and to kill unwanted viruses and bacteria that might contaminate the vaccine during production. It’s a known carcinogen.

Foreign proteins – Vaccines are all grown on different animal tissues, including chicken eggs, dog lung, human placenta and monkey kidney. These foreign tissues must be processed by the body’s immune system and are the fastest route to autoimmune disease.

And just because you don’t see these specific ingredients listed on the packaging or on the manufacturer’s website, that doesn’t mean these ingredients aren’t in there. They could just be part of the “trade secret.”

Myth #3: The science on vaccines is settled.Fact: Not even close! The studies are biased, don’t test for long enough and are heavily weighted in favor of vaccine manufacturers.If science is supposed to be objective, how can you consider this science? You can’t.Look, for example, at the distemper vaccine. When this vaccine was first introduced in the 1950s, vets weren’t really sure if the vaccine would work, but were giving it to dogs anyway. Then, when there were some instances of dogs coming down with the disease about a year after vaccination, they didn’t go back and do more tests to “make the vaccine better,” they just decided to revaccinate. They thought the average pet owner wouldn’t want to go back and forth to the vet’s, spending money on antibody titers, so they decided to start the practice of vaccinating yearly.No science here, just arbitrary decisions that are still affecting your animals and family to this day.

[UPDATED] Which Vaccines Does Your Dog Need?

Do you know the difference between so-called “Core” and “Non-Core” vaccines for your dog, and what those terms mean?

Do you sometimes wonder, “How often do I need to vaccinate my dog?” Or which vaccines are absolutely necessary and which are not? And what’s required by law?

It can get confusing. A lot of veterinarians give out misleading information to get you to keep vaccinating your dog regularly.

So we want to fill in the blanks and give you the information you need to make the best decision for your dog.

Then, when you get that card in the mail from your vet reminding you that your dog’s due for his annual physical exam and vaccinations, you’ll be prepared, knowing what your dog does and doesn’t need to remain protected from disease – and stay out of trouble with the law!

All of the vaccines given to dogs fit into 2 categories: core and non-core vaccines.

Core vaccines are the ones most vets recommend your dog should have as a puppy. These vaccines all protect against dangerous viral diseases. They are:

Rabies

Distemper

Parvovirus

Adenovirus (Canine Hepatitis)

The Non-Core vaccines include:

Bordetella

Lyme Disease

Leptospirosis 4-way (this is sometimes included in combination vaccines with core vaccines, but it is a non-core vaccine and should be considered separately)

Canine Influenza

Parainfluenza

Adenovirus Intranasal

Several of the non-core vaccines (Bordetella, Lyme and Leptospirosis) are bacterial vaccines. Bacterial vaccines have low efficacy rates coupled with high incidence of adverse reactions. This means they should rarely be used, and then, only after careful consideration of all the risks of vaccinating vs not vaccinating against these diseases.

But if you do plan to give your dog any of these vaccines (or you already have), you’ll need to know how long they last and how to protect him after.

This is great, but it still doesn’t answer the question of which ones your dog needs. Don’t worry, I’m getting to that.

We’ve created a downloadable chart that you can print off and take with you (or look at before you make an appointment). In it, you’ll see two parts, one for Core and one for Non-Core vaccines.

First, for core vaccines … you’ll see the Minimum Duration of Immunity of the Core Vaccines. Protection against disease from these vaccines has been proven by clinical studies to last from 7 to 15 years (depending on the vaccine). The core vaccine information in the chart is based on clinical studies by Ronald D Schultz PhD and you can read more about his work in this article.

If your dog has had any of the core vaccines at 16 weeks of age or older, he’s most likely protected for life and doesn’t need to be vaccinated again.

Your veterinarian may not agree with this. Unless your veterinarian is truly holistic, she will probably at least follow the AAHA guidelines.

Your veterinarian may imply that the core vaccines are required by law. But, except for rabies, they’re not.

Next, for non-core vaccines, you’ll see we’ve focused on the three main non-core vaccines that your vet’s likely to recommend: Bordetella (kennel cough), Lyme Disease and Leptospirosis. Since we don’t advocate any of these vaccines, the chart lists some issues with these vaccines that you should consider before vaccinating your dog.

Vaccinating your dog more often than necessary can be very dangerous for him. All vaccines have potential adverse reactions. These can range from fairly mild reactions like lethargy or soreness, to really severe ones like anaphylactic shock, autoimmune diseases and even death. The vaccine can also cause the disease it’s intended to prevent!

When your dog is protected by the vaccines he’s already had, vaccinating him again does not make him “more immune.”

Vaccines also contain other ingredients that are potentially harmful for your dog.

Most vaccines include toxic ingredients that add to the risks of vaccinating your dog.

Two of these are:

Thimerosal

This is a mercury based additive used as a preservative. Mercury toxicity is well known and repeatedly proven in studies. Yet it’s still contained in most veterinary vaccines today. Even some vaccines that claim to be thimerosal-free may still contain small amounts of thimerosal. That’s because it can be used in processing but not added as an ingredient, so the manufacturers don’t have to disclose it.

Gentamicin

This is an antibiotic. According to the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration), antibiotics are in vaccines to prevent bacterial infection during manufacturing, So when your dog gets a vaccine, he’s getting antibiotics whether you like it or not.

Do your homework and read our chart before you go.

If your veterinarian presses you to over-vaccinate your dog with core vaccines, you can draw her attention to Dr Schultz’s research. Dr Schultz’s studies show the minimum duration of immunity that likely protects your dog for life once he’s had his core vaccines as a puppy or adult.

If your vet needs more convincing, you can ask for titers to confirm your dog’s protected. Some vets charge an exorbitant amount for titers (perhaps because they really don’t want to do them) and some may even refuse.

If that’s the case, you can ask your vet to draw the blood for you (usually about a $15 to $20 charge) and then send it yourself to Hemopet for testing. You can submit your titer request on Hemopet’s website. A distemper and parvo titer costs only $52 and you can ship the vial of blood for about $6 via a US Postal Service Small Flat Rate Box.

Your vet is likely to recommend Bordetella and Leptospirosis vaccines, as well as Lyme if you live in a high tick area. All of these vaccines carry a high risk for your dog and don’t work very well. Check the vaccine issues listed on the chart, and also consider these points before vaccinating your dog.

Bordetella: If you board your dog, try to find a kennel that doesn’t require Bordetella. If your kennel does, ask to sign a waiver accepting the risk of your dog getting kennel cough on their premises … that’s what worries them. Or better yet, have a pet-sitter come to your home and then you don’t need to worry about vaccination requirements.

Leptospirosis: If you think your dog is at risk for lepto, make sure you find out from your local health authority what strains of lepto are in your area. The vaccine covers the L. canicola, L. icterohaemorrhagiae, L.grippotyphosa and L.pomona serovars. If these strains aren’t prevalent where you live, there is no point in taking the risk of vaccinating your dog.

Also note that some vets give the Leptospirosis vaccine in conjunction with core vaccines. You may see a vaccine called something like DHLPP. That “L” is leptospirosis … make sure you know what vaccines your vet is using. Your dog could still get the lepto shot.

Lyme: if your dog’s not out in the woods picking up ticks, he’s probably not at risk for Lyme disease. If you do take your dog into tick-infested areas, use natural protection methods to keep the ticks away. Check him thoroughly for ticks when you get home. Removing the ticks promptly will help prevent the tick from infecting him.

So which dog vaccines are necessary? That’s a question only you can answer!

Hey Doc. I know you're ridiculously oversaturated with nonsense from alwayschoppedlady, but I want to put some perspective in place. When I said I was autistic, they called me vaccine damaged. Frankly, this sort of thing should be considered a slur. That's the kind of person we're dealing with, and I want it to be advised to anyone on here who's considering pressuring them with the fact that they are autistic and consider that better than death. This person does not agree.

I am mostly oversaturated by folks coming into my ask box to crow about a take down, which needs to stop at this point. I’m fairly sure the questioning has stopped because other people have taken it upon themselves to this person’s ask box directly. That also needs to stop, partly because it will turn into harassment when thousands of people do it, and partly because it’s killed the ‘conversation’ as they are now too busy to reply.

I would urge people to stay off their blog anyway, let them come back if they have more to add. If you spend your time chasing down everyone who was ever Wrong On The Internet, you’ll never get anything done.

Okay. I give up. Vaccines do not cause autism.

Autism is a behavioral diagnosis. In order to receive the diagnosis of “Autism” a child must exhibit a certain number of behaviors over a certain time frame. If he or she does not do so, the diagnosis of “autism” is not warranted.

There is no blood test for “autism.”

“Autism” can’t be confirmed or “ruled-out” by laboratory analysis. It’s strictly a behavioral diagnosis.

Therefore, anything that causes physiological damage cannot directly “cause” autism.

Ergo… vaccines cannot “cause” “autism.”

Vaccines cause other stuff.

Vaccines cause encephalitis. Vaccines cause seizures. Vaccines cause immune system deficiencies. Vaccines cause gastrointestinal problems.

Encephalitis causes mood swings. Encephalitis causes extreme pain. Encephalitis causes inattention and impulsivity. Encephalitis causes aggression. Encephalitis causes balance problems and difficulty relating to one’s environment.

Seizures cause mood swings. Seizures cause inattention and impulsivity. Seizures cause alterations in conciousness.

Immune system deficiencies cause children to have more frequent bacterial infections, such as ear infections, upper respiratory infections (URIs), sinusutis, and strep infections.

Immune system deficiencies cause children to have more frequent viral infections, such as stomatitis, “fevers of unknown origin,” “viral rashes,” hives, conjunctivitis, and gastrointestinal viruses that cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Immune system deficiencies cause children to be more vulnerable to “everything that’s going around” and to have a tougher time getting over things than their peers.

Gastrointestinal damage from vaccines causes diarrhea. Gastrointestinal damage from vaccines causes nausea, reflux, vomiting, and the recently discovered “disease” now known as GERD (Gastro-Esophageal Reflux Disease).

Gatrointestinal damage from vaccines causes increased vulnerability to viruses and bacteria, which leads to increased administration of antibiotics, which leads to overgrowth of pathogenic yeast.

Pathogenic yeast overgrowth leads to intestinal hyperpermeability (“leaky gut syndrome”).

Pathogenic yeast overgrowth leads to constipation. Pathogenic yeast overgrowth leads to food allergies. Pathogenic yeast overgrowth leads to skin eruptions, “drunken, silly behavior,” inattention and impulsivity, and cravings for bread, sugar, ice cream, milk, and carbohydrates.

Technically, vaccines do not cause autism because techincally there is no such thing as autism.

Vaccines cause the underlying physical conditions that result in the pain, neurological damage, immune system disorders, gastrointestinal damage, and yeast overgrowth – all of which combine to produce the behavioral symptoms that result in the “autism” diagnosis.

Gastrointestinal damage is the most obvious result of vaccine damage.

When a previously healthy child suddenly starts having multiple episodes of watery and extremely stinky diarrhea every day, and this happens shortly after receiving vaccinations, it is notable as a “vaccine injury.” What is not so obvious is that when the child’s gut is permanently damaged, he or she is no longer able to absorb nutrients necessary to produce neurotransmitters necessary for proper brain function. So when the child develops mood swings, sleep difficulties, and learning disabilities several months later, these issues are not recognized as being related to the vaccine injury because the initial damage occurred many months earlier.

Please re-read the previous paragraph.

This is why Dr. Andrew Wakefield is such a threat to the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Wakefield NEVER said vaccines cause autism. Dr. Wakefield is a gastroenterologist. He saw a number of children with gastrointestinal problems who also happened to be diagnosed with autism. Dr. Wakefield reported his observations. He never claimed that the MMR “caused” autism. He merely reported that a number of children he had seen had BOTH gastrointestinal problems AND autism, and according to parental report, these issues developed within a short time of when the children received the MMR vaccine.

Again… Why is Dr. Wakefield such a threat to the pharmaceutical industry?

Hint: Not because vaccines cause autism – they don’t.

Vaccines cause gastrointestinal damage.

Gastrointestinal damage causes malabsorption of nutrients necessary for proper brain function. Malabsorption of essential nutrients causes immune system disorders, seizures, encephalopathy, etc… and THAT’s what leads to the ultimate diagnosis of “autism.”

If Dr. Wakefield’s observations are correct, SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE will eventually draw the connection between vaccines and the domino-effect that leads to the “autism” diagnosis. From the perspective of the pharmaceutical industry, better to “nip it in the bud” now, which means discrediting Dr. Wakefield to the extent that no one will look further into the science.

Has this ploy worked? Not for me. And not for many of the very intelligent parents I know. Only time will tell if there are enough of us to make a difference.

I know what I’ve said, but I also know that anti-vaxxer hasn’t read the blog, and isn’t trying to have a debate or discussion with me. They were trying to preach as a nebulous, faceless entity known as ‘vets’ and paint them either as stupid or deliberately evil, and they weren’t doing it very well.

I do of course encourage people to make up their own minds, but doing so involves considering evidence from both sides, not just the one you’ve already decided you agree with.

It's so wrong. So, so wrong. He's so much older than me. So much. I wish I could just forget him completely. So I wouldn't have to suffer from the ever-lasting pain in my heart. It hurts so damn bad. The thing is... I just figured this out, thanks to you. I can't trust anymore. Maybe that's why I just felt sadder when that girl flirted with me, because I know I fully can trust her... But I can't trust myself to not fuck things up like with every relationship I've had.

I just... I don't trust myself, and I don't think I'll be able to for awhile. Thank you for making me realize that, so I can try and work on it. But, it's going to be hard. Is there ever a point at which you decide to stop vaccinating an animal due to age? My dog is 14 and aside from minor uveitis and very mild arthritis in one knee, our vet doesn’t feel it necessary to vaccinate her anymore because 1) we’ve gotten her all her vaccines on time her entire life, and 2) she doesn’t want to “tempt fate” as she had a 15yo patient years ago who was healthy, then quickly went downhill in the week following a vaccination (I fully support our vet’s decision and reasoning)

I tend not to use ‘age’ as a guide for when to stop vaccinating so much as ‘accumulating conditions associated with age’. Any immune mediated condition, for example, would be a prime candidate for a reason to stop vaccinating.

It comes down to asking whether the potential benefits of vaccinating are still greater than the potential risks of vaccinating. For an old dog with a low-risk lifestyle, you might decide that the vaccines are no longer worth doing, though the regular health checks definitely are.

There are some animals with chronic illnesses that I would stop vaccinating after a year of age, if there was any possible correlation at all. It all comes down to the individual animal.

That said if I was worried about the animal kicking the bucket in the next 12 months, I’d probably skip the vaccine. But that’s based on health status, not age. An eight year old dogue de bordeaux is going to be in much worse shape than a 12 year old jack russel terrier.

But if the animal is in a weakened state when he eats the bait, it’s quite likely that either the vaccine will fail, or it will create the disease it was intended to protect against… Many vaccines given to dogs are modified live virus (MLV) vaccines. These vaccines can be shed in feces and urine for weeks after vaccination. This means these diseases can be spread through vaccination. The other problem is that MLV vaccines can make your dog ill. Vaccination against bacterial diseases like leptospirosis can also spread the disease. Holistic veterinarian Patricia Jordan DVM explains that the leptospira organism can become a source of infection for humans in contact with a dog vaccinated for leptospirosis. Dr Jordan says: “Leptospira can and will shed in a vaccinated dog and in turn, infect any humans living in the same household!” When a duck hunter contracted leptospirosis in California, the state’s field study didn’t find any leptospira in the bodies of water he frequented.

Retroviruses in vaccines can have lethal effects. Canine parvovirus suddenly appeared around the world in 1978 and is now widely considered to have come from the feline panleukopenia virus (FPV). Holistic veterinarian Deva Khalsa VMD explains how she witnessed this when she was at veterinary school … “When I entered veterinary school in 1976, parvovirus disease in dogs didn’t exist. There were no parvovirus cases at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine until 1978.” That’s when Dr Khalsa observed case after case of canines with life-threatening, bloody diarrhea admitted into ICU to be placed under 24 hour care on supportive IV fluids. The new disease was being delivered to dogs in their regular booster shots. In 2010, researchers in Scotland and Japan isolated a feline retrovirus in both dog and cat vaccines. The authors stated …

“Collectively, our data show unequivocally that RD-114 is present in live attenuated vaccines commonly used in dogs and cats from different continents and produced by three different manufacturers […] the large-scale exposure to RD-114, particularly of the dog population, may have effects that are impossible to predict even if successful RD-114 transmission was an extremely rare event.”

In US Dog World in March 1995, Dr Jean Dodds discussed the implication of retrovirus contamination in dog vaccines…

“Immune-suppressant viruses of the retrovirus and parvovirus classes have recently been implicated as causes of bone marrow failure, immune-mediated blood diseases, hematologic malignancies (lymphoma and leukemia), dysregulation of humoral and cell-mediated immunity, organ failure (liver, kidney) and autoimmune endocrine disorders – especially of the thyroid gland (thyroiditis), adrenal gland (Addison’s disease) and pancreas (diabetes).”

The case of the SV-40 monkey virus being found in polio vaccines is well known…

Viruses can mutate, allowing them to spread more easily. Dr Patricia Jordan explains…

“There are two canine parvoviruses: canine parvovirus-1 and canine parvovirus-2. CPV-2 is the primary cause of the puppy enteritis that we commonly see. Over the years, parvo has mutated from CPV-2 to CPV-2b to CPV-2c. It seems that dogs may be getting the ultimate revenge on cats: the CPV-2c strain of parvovirus is now crossing species and infecting cats with another brand new virus.”

This happens with human viruses too. A virologist with the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Olen Kew, says that there’s no difference in virulence between wild polio viruses and the mutated form. “The only difference is that this virus was originally in a vaccine vial.” A similar thing happens with the bird flu virus.

One problem with vaccine manufacturers’ claims of efficacy of their products is that vaccinated populations don’t live in a sterile lab where their testing is done. In the research lab, vaccines appear to be very effective. In the field, vaccines are much less predictable. Wildlife biologist Dr Roger Burrows noted that lions in Serengeti National Park (SNP), followed by those in the Masai Mara of Kenya, died like flies in 1994 from a new strain of canine distemper. It turned out that the same strain of distemper found in the lions was also in experimental vaccines on dogs in the area during a rabies vaccination trial. Dr Burrows further explains that in 2007, the same new distemper strain was again identified in free-living African wild dogs in Masai areas east of SNP. The fact that local breeds of domestic dogs around SNP and the Masai Mara were vaccinated against rabies, and then soon after succumbed to a virulent outbreak of distemper, suggests that the rabies vaccinations caused immunosuppression, creating increased susceptibility to distemper. Dr Vernon Coleman MB described how, in 1989, hyenas were threatened with extinction when scientists vaccinated individual animals to protect them against rabies…Dr Coleman suggests…“And yet the rabies vaccine is now compulsory in many parts of the world. Is it not possible that it is the vaccine which is keeping this disease alive?” All of these 5 dangers highlight the risks you take when you vaccinate your dog. Oh no. You’re 13 and you’ve been fed this bull by one of the least reliable and most biased websites that I know of about dog health, ‘Dogs Naturally’. Oh this is making me cringe. Did you copy a lot of this straight off the website?

Did anyone explain to you what a modified live virus vaccine is? Historically they used to be the virus run through replication cycles on a different species cells, making it adapt to a ‘new’ host while losing efficiency with the intended vaccine recipient, but mostly these days they take a gene for a viral capsule protein and stick it onto another virus, like a canarypox. Such a modified live virus can stimulate antibody production against the target virus capsule proteins, but it doesn’t go terribly far in the host, because it’s not a canary.

Also, it’s worth examining the motives of anyone making ‘anti-establishment’ claims like ‘vaccines are bad’. Most of them want to sell you something.

Patricia Jordan - Wants to sell you anti-vaccination books and recommends homeopathy. A pro-tip for your future life, anybody recommending homeopathy is a charlatan who rejects scientific principles and you should just throw the whole person out.

We, being the scientific community, are pretty damn sure canine parvovirus mutated from feline parvovirus. Feline parvo vaccines could protect dogs from canine parvo. Also, parvovirus is not, at all, a retrovirus. Retrovirus means they have RNA instead of DNA. Canine parvovirus was certainly not ‘delivered to dogs in their regular booster shots’. That’s some pretty potent kool-aid being drunk there.

Dr Deva Khalsa wants you to call her at a rate of $125 for half an hour.

RD-114 is present in every single cat on the planet. It is present because cat cells are used in the manufacture of those vaccines.

Dr Jean Dodds I didn’t even have to look up, notorious for over-diagnosis thyroid illness based on blood test results for dogs she hasn’t even seen.

Every single possible immune stimulation of any kind can be linked to every single immune mediated condition, including the natural infection the vaccines are intended to prevent. Not a secret, discussed it quite a lot, openly, on this blog.

Claiming that rabies vaccination made animals vulnerable to distemper is such a ridiculously huge reach.

All of it, it would seem, an effort to make you, the unwitting consumer, purchase their $20 ‘anti-vaccinosis remedy’. Which is homeopathic. Which is water that they are pretending is medicine.

These people want your money, and will sell you fear and lies to get it.

Annual vaccination is unnecessary and dangerous for your dog.

Experts like leading veterinary immunology researcher Ronald D Schultz PhD proved decades ago that most dogs will be protected for many years (and probably for life) by one round of core vaccines as puppies – usually when they’re about 16 weeks old.

So, after their puppy shots, most dogs don’t need to be re-vaccinated ever, let alone year after year after year.

Dr Schultz reports:“The patient receives no benefit and may be placed at serious risk when an unnecessary vaccine is given. Few or no scientific studies have demonstrated a need for cats or dogs to be revaccinated.”

The World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) have announced publicly that annual vaccination is unnecessary and can be harmful.

But they do nothing to stop vets from vaccinating more often than necessary.

Don’t misquote my own profession at me, thank you.

Annual vaccination is REQUIRED for non-core vaccines, if you elect to have them.

An annual booster is recommended by the WSAVA vaccination guidelines for core vaccines. Three boosters are recommended for puppies under 16 weeks. The guidelines actually talk about up to five boosters for young puppies, which is more than most vest currently even consider.

Here are the guidelines from the WSAVA, freely available in multiple languages. You can read them, anyone can read them. There’s no secrets. They are the consensus of multiple veterinary specialists all around the world, not just one you chose to quote.

These statements are all about core vaccines and core vaccines only: Distemper, Infectious Hepatitis and Canine parvovirus.

Guess what? Rabies isn’t a core vaccine. Neither is Kennel cough, leptospirosis, Lyme disease, and anything else.

As mentioned in a previous post, just yesterday, here is a quote directly taken from the WSAVA guidelines, which are the international authority on canine and feline vaccinations:

Therefore an adult dog may, according to these guidelines, still be re-vaccinated annually, but the components of these vaccinations may differ each year.

he UK arm of veterinary pharmaceutical company (and vaccine manufacturer) Merck Animal Health is MSD Animal Health, and it operates under the name Intervet Ltd.

Intervet is shameless about teaching veterinary clinics how to sell.

I’ve seen one of their brochures promoting a clinic management system developed by veterinarian Dr Steven Garner, who has “the most productive veterinary practice in the world”.

They claim the system results in “greater owner compliance” and “can grow your practice turnover [sales] by 40% and your practice profit by 52%.”

“Greater owner compliance” of course means they get you to bring your dog to the clinic more often.

… and Intervet has dreamed up an especially sneaky way of persuading you to do that.

It starts with getting you to vaccinate your dog more often, and it also helps clinics sell you more veterinary services.

It’s called the Vaccination Amnesty program and for the last few years they’ve been campaigning hard to get UK veterinary clinics to participate.

The program targets clients whose pets’ vaccines have lapsed.

So it’s not hard to figure out that means the clinics are pushing annual vaccinations!

Intervet provides veterinary clinics with an impressive array of promotional materials to market the amnesty program.

Once they join the program, clinics offer the “lapsed” pets a complete primary course of vaccinations for the price of a single booster.

So not only are they vaccinating animals who are almost certainly already protected (because we know they’ve been vaccinated before) … they’re making them start from the beginning as if they’d never been vaccinated!

And while your dog’s at the clinic, they do their best to find other ailments that need treating, as well as selling you things like dental procedures, worming and pest control medications.

It’s working quite well for them.

Testimonials from clinics brag about how successful they were at selling additional services to people who brought their dogs in under the vaccine amnesty program.

Once again, this is a crafty way to make more money … and it’s at the expense of your dog’s health.

In case I wasn’t clear, over-vaccination exposes your dog to the potential for a lifetime of chronic disease.

Greater owner compliance means you can send reminders, text messages, email and get them to show up for their appointments. Every single Vet Practice Managemnt System (VPMS) makes a claim like this. And a modern vet practice has to have one, otherwise you’re writing all those important medical records on pieces of paper. It’s the system that holds all our data: medical records, Xray, client phone numbers, blood results, etc. Having a VPMS, or selling one, doesn’t automatically make a villain.

Specifically in your references ‘Amnesty’ program, and that is a bizarre word choice for the company, Lepto and FeLV do not have any sort of immunity or protection much beyond one year, so the animals that have lapsed may actually require them, same with feline herpes and cat flu, even if distemper, hepatitis and canine parvo might have been ok.

Lepto, FeLV, parainfluenza and feline herpes virus protection has probably lapsed for these animals, and annual vaccination is potentially highly appropriate. Lepto is a particular concern because people can catch that as well.

Their ‘promotional materials’ are not ‘impressive’. They’re quite average really.

Now, since you like bold text so much, let’s play a hypothetical.

I see a dog, or a cat, that the owner finally brings into the clinic. It’s been three, maybe five years since it’s seen a vet.

I see the animal’s teeth are rotting out of its skull, and recommend a dental procedure to aleviate this infection, chronic inflammation and pain.

It has fleas and associated allergic dermatitis. I recommend flea control and perhaps some medication because the poor animal is madly itchy, and nobody wants fleas.

I discover a lump and recommend a fine needle aspirate (a type of mini biopsy) to determine how much we need to worry about this lump.

I also check out the rest of the animal, not to discover more problems to make money from, as you would claim, but because I want this animal to be happy and healthy and owners are abysmal at noticing chronic illness.

Animals in this condition are often presented with pride by an owner claiming “He hasn’t been to the vet in years because he’s so healthy!” when the reality is that the owner just hasn’t looked.

In case that’s not clear, the most reliable and consistent way to expose your pet to a lifetime of chronic disease is to avoid taking it into the vet clinic for regular checkups.

The umbrella term for health damage caused by vaccines is vaccinosis.

A precious few forward thinking vets and pet owners are realizing that the excessive numbers of vaccines routinely given to domestic pets are wreaking havoc on their health. These vaccines have the ability to disrupt, dis-regulate, and in some cases virtually destroy an animal’s natural, innate immune function.

Okay. I give up. Vaccines do not cause autism.

There is no blood test for “autism.”

“Autism” can’t be confirmed or “ruled-out” by laboratory analysis. It’s strictly a behavioral diagnosis.

Therefore, anything that causes physiological damage cannot directly “cause” autism.

Ergo… vaccines cannot “cause” “autism.”

Vaccines cause other stuff.

Vaccines cause encephalitis. Vaccines cause seizures. Vaccines cause immune system deficiencies. Vaccines cause gastrointestinal problems.

Seizures cause mood swings. Seizures cause inattention and impulsivity. Seizures cause alterations in consciousness.

Immune system deficiencies cause children to have more frequent bacterial infections, such as ear infections, upper respiratory infections (URIs), sinusutis, and strep infections.

Immune system deficiencies cause children to be more vulnerable to “everything that’s going around” and to have a tougher time getting over things than their peers.

Gastrointestinal damage from vaccines causes increased vulnerability to viruses and bacteria, which leads to increased administration of antibiotics, which leads to overgrowth of pathogenic yeast.

Pathogenic yeast overgrowth leads to intestinal hyperpermeability (“leaky gut syndrome”).

Technically, vaccines do not cause autism because technically there is no such thing as autism.

Gastrointestinal damage is the most obvious result of vaccine damage.

Please re-read the previous paragraph.

This is why Dr. Andrew Wakefield is such a threat to the pharmaceutical industry.

Again… Why is Dr. Wakefield such a threat to the pharmaceutical industry?

Hint: Not because vaccines cause autism – they don’t.

Your dog is more likely to contract parvovirus than have a severe and fatal reaction to the vaccine, and in case you didn’t know (I’m sure you did though) parvovirus has a 90% fatality rate in puppy’s even with appropriate care at time of diagnosis, so I do know I think the risk may be worth it in some cases. As Dr. Ron Schultz (head of the Immunology Department of the University of Wisconsin Veterinary School) says (and I paraphrase), ideally “more immunized dogs would have less vaccines and less immunized dogs would have more vaccines.” In essence, vets still see lots of young pets die from preventable infectious diseases. The reason these diseases have not been eradicated is there is a pool of unvaccinated domesticated pets that are harboring these diseases.
