Mmm. This is going to be controversial so bear with me but.

I feel like blaming bloggers and fanfic writers, especially people who haven't supoorted Harry Potter financially in years, for JK Rowling's continued financial success is like blaming tumblr gif makers for Disney's continued success.

Like it or not, but Harry Potter is a wildly famous franchise all across the world and pretending otherwise is disingenuous at best. The vast majority of the people continuing to buy HP merch aren't bloggers or fanfic writers on tumblr, it's the people who have absolutely no idea that Rowling is a piece of shit and who are just going out to see a movie, or visiting a cool theme park, or buying merch for a book series that they really enjoyed reading to their kids, or whatever else people do while just. Living their lives.

Rowling is talking out of her ass when she claims that her continued profits are because fans support her as a person, but the fact that people are actually falling for that claim hook, line, and sinker is just absurd to me.

And I think the majority of the people going after fans are aware of this and that's WHY they attack and blame fans who aren't even doing anything except making fan content, because they know that Harry Potter isn't going anywhere and that Rowling will continue to rake in the profits and use that money to fund her horrific shit until she's either in the ground or we completely change copyright laws, so they go after fans who are both easy to access and easy to HURT.

But like. Suicide baiting a trans person for writing drarry fics isn't going to take down Rowling and it isn't going to reduce Harry Potter's profits and it isn't going to make you feel better. It's just going to hurt someone who is already vulnerable.

As someone who is autistic and has BPD and CPTSD and loads of trauma yes you sometimes need to change how you interact with others to keep people around

When I was 13 I hit the few friends I had when I was angry

I had to change that in order to keep those friendships

When I was in my early 20s if I was losing an disagreement with my husband I would threaten to kill myself. My husband told me it hurt him and was cruel and manipulative behaviour, because it was.

So I worked hard to change that to keep my relationship

It's easy to say "I shouldn't have to change for others" and that's true to an extent. You shouldn't change your interests or passions or dim your light. And you should have space to be imperfect and flawed and not have to pretend your ugly bits aren't real. But if something you are doing it causing other people harm you kinda need to change that.

That's called "living in a society"

People adapt to each other and make space for each other in their lives. You adapt to them and they adapt to you

You start being more diligent about throwing away the empty toilet roll because it really bothers them. They start warning you before they run the blender because you hate loud noises

There is a certain type of person who heard the phrase "your emotions are valid" and took that to mean "my emotional reactions and my behaviour are always objectively correct because my emotions are valid and if you have an emotional response or react to what I'm doing negatively then you are wrong and you can't be hurt because my emotions are valid"

And that's a recipe for disaster

Your emotions are valid to feel. They are how you feel and there are reasons you feel the way you do

However, your reactions and behaviour are something you can learn to control and can be irrational

We live in a society and we as people change each other as we interact and that isn't necessarily a bad thing

Wood sorrel would be a great flavor for a candy. It's so tart and tangy, some people say it's like lemon but it doesn't have the chalky undertone of lemon, it's like the dryness of lemon acidity was replaced with juicy. Green apple but less sweet, more vegetable. i love to eat the woodsorrel (but don't eat too much because it has oxalic acid which your kidneys don't like)

I made woodsorrel candy!

Here's what I did:

Harvest several generous handfuls of woodsorrel (Oxalis stricta). It grows rampantly near the bushes outside my apartment, so this was very easy for me.

Clean the plants and strip the leaves. I ended up with about a quarter cup of fresh leaves, but I think that more would yield a more flavorful result. Using 1/2 cup and 2 Tbsp of just-boiled water, steep the leaves for 20 minutes to make a tisane. Mine didn't noticeably change color, but it smelled delightfully lemony.

Prepare a rimmed baking sheet with a silicone mat sitting in it. This will be important later.

Strain the tisane into a smallish pot with high sides over high heat. Then add 1 cup + 2 Tbsp of sugar, and 2 Tbsp of corn syrup. (I do not recommend omitting the corn syrup, because the invert sugars are very good at preventing unwanted crystalization). Bring the mixture to a boil, stirring constantly, then keep stirring until it reaches 300 degrees F, or the hard-crack stage of candy.

Then pour the candy onto the silicone mat in the baking sheet. It is VERY HOT at this stage, absolutely DO NOT TOUCH with your hands. If you want to color the candy, this is a good time to do it, put a couple of drops of food color on the candy (I was trying to dye mine green, but I grabbed red instead of yellow, oops!).

Then, using a spoon or a bench scraper fold the hardening edges of the candy toward the hot center, and repeat until it becomes cool enough to touch with your hands. Pull it like taffy. If it becomes too stiff and unworkable, heat it in the microwave in 10 second increments until it becomes workable again. When you are happy with how it looks, cut it into segments.

It tastes a bit like lime and a bit like green apple, it's very good! I think it might be nice to use more woodsorrel, or possibly used dried woodsorrel as well as fresh

The Lakota Language Consortium had promised to preserve the tribe’s native language and had spent years gathering recordings of elders, including Taken Alive’s grandmother, to create a new, standardized Lakota dictionary and textbooks.

But when Taken Alive, 35, asked for copies, he was shocked to learn that the consortium, run by a white man, had copyrighted the language materials, which were based on generations of Lakota tradition. The traditional knowledge gathered from the tribe was now being sold back to it in the form of textbooks.

I’m reblogging this again because people in the notes are focusing on the wrong things.

This isn’t about books. This is about an organization founded and led by two white men using the work of indigenous peoples to create resources for their endangered languages and then not giving those people access to those resources. It’s about them literally copywriting the words of Elders and other indigenous people and refusing to let their tribes use them.

People are fighting to have access to the recordings that deceased loved ones gave to this organization and being denied because those recordings are copywrited. These men are literally taking aspects of these communities and saying, “these are ours now, no one else can use them, not even the people who shared them with us.”

And it’s not just one or two people who have issues with this. It’s not just one tribe. It’s multiple accounts of this organization and its founders violating the boundaries of both individuals and tribes and taking what wasn’t theirs to take.

This isn’t acceptable under any circumstances.

You try to ask more questions, but remembering the war distresses her, and so you speak of other things. When she’s drifted off to sleep, you get to your feet, go home and tell your parents: you are leaving in search of your God.
