Okay Corpse Bride.. So here’s my theory. How much you bet that Emily is the younger sister of Victoria’s mother or father? Hear me out. Lord Barkis was around Emily’s age when she fell in love with him.. And he’s still alive, so him killing Emily had to take place in his life span. He’s clearly a lot older now but still around the parents age or a little younger. Emily is part of a wealthy family so her father said no to marrying his daughter off to a poor commoner like Barkis was as to be expected. So since she literally stole her mothers wedding dress and the family jewels she would have been completely disowned and they would have swept any memory of her under the rug because she disgraced the family. As far as they know she ran away with this guy. So now they have money issues and are struggling but have too much pride to admit it. So my guess is it’s Victoria’s mothers younger sister, and now Victoria’s mother has to grow up in this dysfunctional torn apart family where they’re struggling and fighting and trying to keep up this act. So Victoria’s mother grows up bitter and hates anything that has to do with Emily and casts her out as the parents did, she never had a sister. They removed her from their records and took the painting of her off the wall and burned it. So present day, Victoria has no idea any of this ever happened, and she’s also the ONLY ONE in the family who sees Emily, not to mention it would be difficult to place who she is seeing as she’s a corpse. Also it takes Barkis awhile to recognize Emily as well like she is now. Nobody from the town who was at the wedding would remember her cause they’re either dead and already know her story or commoners who wouldn’t have know them. And because of the financial issues the family clearly stopped having other wealthy people over, and also probably to hide the fact that Emily was gone so everyone would forget. And when Barkis comes back no one recognizes him because he’s not the commoner he was and most likely the mother would have been kept away from him and Emily. So when they sing this part about Victoria:
“To the noble realm Of our ancestry And who’d have guessed in a million years That our daughter with a face Of an otter in disgrace Would provide our ticket to a rightful place” All it makes me think is maybe the reason they say that about her face is because she’s the only one in the family who looks close to how Emily did. Idk guys. That’s my take on it. Thoughts?
Maybe when you get your heart broken at young age, you’ll get bitter about love. But deep inside, you still believe in it.
