it's the way that ruben's abuse towards everyone else is pure rage and violence, but with niall it is always the abuse of a father. punishing niall like he's a disobedient child: clean the house, mow the lawn, show me a picture when you're done so i know you've done it well. i pay for everything you have.
on top of the emasculation and on top of the way he resorts to sexual violence every single time. it's the way he calls him son as much as he calls him brother.
AND the worst part of it is that it's the making of that bond that creates the vehicle for the violence! ruben insists that niall is family (they both do) and so he's allowed to hurt niall in the way that he learned family is allowed to hurt each other. he does love niall, and so he has to love him in the same way that he learned to be loved.

HALF MAN Episode 5
"I needed to be a physically imposing presence...If I felt big and I felt like I was towering over Jamie Bell... I thought that that would make for some arresting visuals." - Richard Gadd

I keep seeing comments incredulous about how the characters moved on so quickly after the sexual assault and how they didn't address it but that part felt particularly viscerally real to me. You wouldn't believe how easily abnormal things become normal in abusive relationships, how quickly you can forget what happened or make yourself believe it was something else, how the bar for what is expected or forgivable is constantly changed. You find yourself just accepting things you couldn't have ever even imagined accepting, and experiencing how one moment something happens but the next moment it's like it never happened. This applies both to abuse victims and abusers. I haven't rewatched Baby Reindeer since it came out but i recall it also effectively depicted this dissonant banal but surreal experience that is often a part of sexual violence and other abuse and interacting with your abusers.
You would think that violently raping someone you call your brother is the unimaginable final line to cross. After that any kind of reconciliation becomes impossible. It irrevocably changes everything. But turns out it changes nothing. The time that passes between the rape scene and the hug at the end is about 15 minutes. That's all it takes and everything that happened is erased or rather becomes integrated. It's like it never happened even though of course it happened. 15 minutes after being raped Niall is apologizing and embracing Ruben. Ruben, who compared sexual violence to attack on your soul and told Niall they can't let Ruben's dad win, rapes Niall likes it nothing. 15 minutes later he's again assuming his role as Niall's protector and gently stroking his hair when they hug. And that's how it is and will always be
