Due to the writer’s strike, Amanda only has one new upcoming project: She’ll be directing a new Canadian series Wild Cards, in the fall. The

How about writing this from the more correct angle. Due to corporate greedy, untalented oiks and ceos, forcing writers to fight for themselves and human creativity in the industry, Amanda is working on only one project thaty was already WRITTEN BY THE WRITERS NOW FORCED TO STRIKE ACTION.
I didn’t mean to imply that the writers are to blame for Amanda not having work. I do get that the sentence could be interpreted that way, though, so I’ll change the wording. (Side note: Wild Cards is a Canadian series, so no, it’s not affected by the strike and didn’t need to be written before the strike, at least Amanda didn’t mention that. And also the way she worded it at FedCon and LFCC it doesn’t sound like she’s worried about being out of work but instead happy that she gets to fully spend time with Olivia before Olivia leaves for university. I didn’t want to include that personal information in the post, though. Amanda supports the writers’ strike.)

The current facts.
I don't want to clickbait so the short answer to that question is "No." The answer in the post just includes more details.

Stop deflecting compliments by making jokes, Amanda :) We mean it :) You are light and you are amazing.
I had the pleasure of meeting Amanda in the Meet & Greet on Friday. I’m going to share two stories here. One goes straight to the heart. The other is funny. Both are typical for Amanda, and one of the reasons I love and admire her so much.
1) Someone asked her what prompted her to give a talk on mental health. She said that the CompanionApp approached her about a year ago and asked her what topic she wanted to cover, and she said “mental health” because it was close to her heart (side note: one of her brothers was schizophrenic). Also, she has seen Covid-19 and the lockdowns affect many people and their mental health. And we need to talk about it and help each other. After that, she gave us an example. It had snowed in Vancouver, and she drove along the streets. On the sidewalk, she saw an elderly women looking miserable. Her clothes were wet, her shoes were not made for this weather, and she had a rollator or cane (I can’t remember). Amanda stopped and asked if she could help her. The elderly lady replied that she had called a cab an hour ago but nobody came. Amanda then offered her a lift. It took little persuasion but, in the end, they masked up and drove to the woman’s apartment building. Amanda made sure the woman arrived safely to her apartment. There the elderly woman thanked Amanda and broke out in tears because she hadn’t had human contact and a face-to-face conversation in months. Amanda gave her her number and told her to call her whenever she needed someone to talk to.
And Amanda asked us how many people had driven past that elderly woman without noticing. After she had finished, she fought back tears and looked at the ceiling. She balled her fist and said, “Damn you, Doris!” (for making me cry now).
2) After someone asked her how the writers’ strike had affected her and she talked a bit about it, she casually mentioned that between filming Dead Boy Detectives and The Irrational, she had taken up a new hobby: building furniture. In the process, she redesigned and remodeled her kitchen. One day Olivia came down, shook her head, and said, “Mom, you need to go back to work.” 😂
Oooh, that first story… <3 I totally can imagine Amanda doing that and telling the story and getting emotional about it <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Thank you for sharing! <3
I wish my memory wasn’t such a mess in general so I was better able to retell this tidbit from the second Meet & Greet but well, maybe someone else who was there can expand on it: Someone asked something along the lines of whether she manages to leave the stories she hears at the convention at the convention or whether she takes them home. (Really don’t remember the wording but I think it was in the end about whether she manages to create a safe emotional distance from the stories or whether they weigh on her) …because sometimes people tell stories of how she / the characters have helped them overcome struggles but sometimes it’s clear that the struggle is still ongoing. She didn’t quite directly answer the question I think but talked about how she sees it as a gift that people feel comfortable to tell her their personal stories. Her daugher tells her that she’s overly empathetic. Her daughter is too. Then she said something about how since she herself struggles to share with her friends when she’s struggling with mental health it’s even more touching that these people do it with her, a stranger. I really wished I’d remember it more verbatim. I was thinking about telling her, that it’s because wanting to share the deep gratitude weights so much more that the struggle to talk about mental health issues with a “stranger” (at least that’s what it’s like for me), but I would’ve needed a moment to form a proper sentence and the conversation switched to homelessness.
Another… not exactly funny, but… just “oh man, Amanda XD”-moment: Someone asked her at the beginning whether she’d managed to eat something (she’d said at the panel that she was hungry and she had like only 15 minutes lunch break) and yes, a crew member gave her a sandwich which she devoured. She then told us that it had been the first meal since Thursday evening. o.O She kinda forgot to eat with everything that was going on.
