There Are More Pressing Issues - Chapter 1

Summary: The research center explosion does more damage than Stratt realized… specifically to her. She should really take some time to recuperate but the launch is fast approaching and there’s work to do. Luckily for her, her 2nd in command is here to help.

Excerpt: I put my glasses back in place. "Enough of that." I start to turn my chair back towards my desk but a flash of light in the window gives me pause. "What was tha-" Before I can finish the thought a deafening explosion shakes the room. I'm thrown from my chair, my head cracking against the desk.

The sound of sirens drag me to consciousness. My ears ring, my head throbs. It takes a moment to reorient myself and take stock of the situation. The glass from the window lays around me along with the remnants of my fifth or sixth coffee of the day, my now broken reading glasses, and a spattering of blood. I must have been cut.

I need to get up. I'm in charge. If something bad has happened everyone will be looking to me for a solution. I reach for the desk to pull myself up. My arm doesn't respond. "I don't have time for this!" I don't even check on it, there's more pressing issues. I grunt and use my other arm to drag myself to my feet. Grabbing my radio from the desk I hurry for the door.

Summary: The horrors persist but Rocky is here to help! He is helping... right?

Excerpt: "Rocky will find it."

Grace peeks at Rocky from under the quilt. At Rocky's insistence, Grace managed to pry himself from the floor of the dorm and moved to the "Don't Go Crazy Room" for fort and movie time. Grace, however, hasn't been able to pay attention to whatever Rocky picked. He's too haunted by the lingering memory of his students. "Find what bud?"

"Grace say he lose mind. Rocky will find for Grace." He leans against Grace's side.

He can't help but laugh a little at the absurdity.

It's an impossible offer. "That's... not how that works. There's nothing to find. I just meant-"

"Rocky not stupid. If Grace mind actually lost Grace would be dead dead dead."

Grace watches his friend confused. "Ok... what do you mean you'll 'find it' then."

He taps his feet against the ground frustratedly as if it's obvious. "Rocky mean will fix. Make better. Get sick you make healthy. Break bone you fix. Lose mind you find. Is opposite of what is wrong."

Ryland smiles. The logic is sound, but language can be finicky. He decides not to correct him.

Summary: Rocky is determined to help now that he has his suit.

Excerpt: "What Rocky help with today question?" He calls from the lab as I grab clothes from the drawers.

"Give me a second Rocky I haven't even decided what I'm doing today yet!"

There's a beat of silence while I switch the shirt I have on. "Has been second now what Rocky hel-"

"Rocky! Seriously! I did not literally mea-" I stop myself and take a breath. I shouldn't have snapped like that. Heck I hadn't even realized I was going to snap. "I didn't literally mean a second. I'll let you know once I know ok?" I just have to remind myself of all the reasons he's so worried about me. In his defense he has good reason to be worried I'm kind of a mess. Slowly starving, prone to injury, fragile squishy space blob.

I finish changing and join him in the lab. "Sorry I shouldn't have yelled like that…"

Swan Song Chapter 8: A New Project

Summary: After lots of work Rocky’s suit is done! Which means a new project is needed.

Excerpt: "Rocky, do I really have to wait in the dorm?"

"Yes yes yes is surprise!" I can hear the shuffling of the Xenonite suit coming from the lab. We had nearly finished it when Rocky demanded all of the tools and pieces back and banished me to the dorm.

I laugh and lean against the wall. "I literally helped you build it! It's not a surprise if I helped!"

"Yes is surprise! Has not seen finished yet!"

I roll my eyes. "Yeah because you kicked me out before you attached the last piece. It was basically finished. Can I come out now?" I risk looking through the doorway only to get scolded.

"No peek! No peek! Bad bad bad!" Rocky yells at me and I duck back into the dorm.

"Sorry! No peeking! Got it!"

"Grace no fun! Try ruin surprise. Very impatient." He teases from the other room. I didn't even get to look long enough to see the "surprise".

"Ok fine! If I admit it's a surprise, can I come out of the dorm?"

Rocky lets out a long exaggerated hum as if he's thinking. "Hmmmm Rocky suppoooose… Grace have to act surprise too!”

"Ok ok fine! I can't wait to see the surprise you have." I smile to myself. It's really nice to be back to our normal banter. The heaviness of our guilt and grief still hangs over us at times but it's quieter now.

"Ok Rocky ready! Come to lab!"

Hail Mary, full of Grace

I understand strattland as a romantic ship but like. Their tragedy is so much Worse as it stands in canon. Two people in impossibly high stakes latch onto each other in a way that's maybe friends but not quite. Grace needs a familiar face on the Vat and that's Stratt. Stratt needs - well from Grace's pov it's ambiguous. but I imagine it's a mixture of someone who treats her as a person (because he can't process her as a dictator) and someone who keeps her moral compass in check. Presumably they get on well enough to spend most of their time together, but they also keep each other at arm's distance.

There is a universe where they could have become true friends. It's also not a possible universe, even if Grace never ended up on the Hail Mary. This (metaphorical) universe is one where Stratt is not imprisoned, and Grace also does not face consequences for his not-quite role as second. Maybe then, away from responsibilities, they can grow close. But Stratt (not Grace) understands that this impossible, thus there remains a Distance between them.

They hover in this space for the whole story. Closer than anyone else but just a bit further than friends. So they care for each other but they never truly Understand each other.

The betrayal goes both ways. Stratt cannot understand why Grace can be so selfish after she destroyed herself to save the world. Grace cannot understand how Stratt can be so callous and cruel when he expresses his autonomy as a human. Neither is wrong and neither is right.

The last time they speak to each other, is the first time they come close to knowing each other fully. And in that moment they let each other down.

They never get closure in-person either. They can never look each other in the eyes and say "now, I understand you and I do not forgive you. But I understand. In a different life we were friends. In this life, we saved the world together at the cost of ourselves. It was worth it, but I will carry a you-shaped wound forever."

Best Left Forgotten: Chapter 1

Summary:

Haunted by his memories and the nightmares that corrupt them Ryland Grace struggles to stay sane through his sleep deprivation and Rocky struggles to help him.

"Alright who's ready for a lightning round!" Grace turns away from the board and turns to face his class. Most of the kids are excitedly waiting for the game to start, a few kids scribble down the last of their notes, and one kid has fallen asleep. Ryland lets them rest. In his years teaching he's found that most kids who fall asleep during his class have a pretty good reason to.They cheer excitedly as he grabs the "lava".

He holds the beanbag up and the class quiets. "What is… the closest star to earth?" He tosses the lava to the first hand up.

"The sun!" There's a chorus of complaints about how the question was too easy and that they knew the answer. Grace chuckles and catches the beanbag when it's thrown back.

"You may have known it but Eli was first! Let's try something harder. Who can tell me the speed of light?" Hands shoot up and he tosses the beanbag to the first one he sees. "Abbie you're up!"

She catches the beanbag and answers quickly. "Three times ten to the power of eight meters per second!"

"Correct!" He holds his hand up for her to throw the beanbag back.

"And it would take around thirteen years to get to Alpha Centauri if you're traveling near light speed!" She tosses it back.

He almost misses the lava, thrown off guard. "The uh… the extra credit wasn't necessary but yeah that's right…" Ryland clears his throat and tosses the beanbag from hand to hand trying to shake off the chill the uncanny response gave him. "Moving on… who can name three stars?" Another flurry of hands. He tosses the bag to one.

"The sun - Sol, Alph Centari, and 40 Eridani!" He knows those stars - of course he does, he's a science teacher - but those three feel too familiar. Too personal.

"That's… yeah ok I'll allow that. I should have clarified to not repeat any but that's on me." A shiver creeps up Grace's spine. There’s an alarm in the back of his mind that urges that something is wrong. "Alright toss it back."

The lava is thrown back. "Is the earth really dying?" The lava hits the floor.

Swan Song Chapter 7: Grief

Summary: Grace a Rocky finally have a heart to heart about their crews.

Excerpt: "…what's an Eridian funeral like?" Rocky stiffens.

"Why Grace want know question?" His focus on his work wavers and he lets out a frustrated trill when he messes part of it up.

"Well I'm curious for one." I glance over to see what went wrong. There's a Xenonite thread out of place but it really isn't that drastic of a mistake. But I get it even small things like that can be frustrating. "You've never told me about it. And two you said you weren't able to hold one for your crew. Maybe we can hold a symbolic one her-"

He interrupts me, angrily kicking his model away. "No! Can not!"

"Woah! What was that for? The model didn't do anything! And what do you mean we can't-"

"Rocky ruin model! Have start over now!" I look over at the discarded figure for a bigger mistake I may have missed. One that would warrant throwing away his hard work. Nothing.

"I'm sure you can fix it, Rocky. It looks fine to me."

He screeches. Dropping the soldering tool I cover my ears. "IS NOT FINE!! Rocky ruin it! Rocky can not fix!"

"HEY! Time out!" He quiets but stomps at the floor too upset to care about his healing injuries. "Ok whatever this is, it's not about the model!" I take a breath calming myself. "Talk to me bud. What's going on? Why can't we have a funeral for your crew."

I Commend Myself To The Stars

Summary: What if Grace never met Rocky. What if it stayed a suicide mission. What if Grace had no one to commend his body to the stars but himself.

Excerpt:

Ryland sits alone on the edge of his bed. He should be used to the loneliness by now, he’s been alone for the past few months, but his work helped distract him. The Beetles were sent this morning. The work is finished now, his distraction is gone, and the reality is crushing. There’s no way home.

He gets up from his bed and straightens the blankets. It’s illogical but he wants to leave Mary looking nice. He changes out of his regular clothes and into one of his space suits. With care he folds his clothes and puts them away. He knows this is just prolonging the inevitable but he's a coward it’s what he does.

For what it’s worth he has to commend whoever packed his personal items for the trip. He places his “lava” on the foot of his bed and takes a long look at the photo of his class - his kids - before laying it down as well. The quilt he wraps around his shoulders. Even a sacrifice deserves a final comfort

Swan Song Chapter 6: Guilt

Summary: Rocky throws himself into a project to the point of ignoring Grace. Is it the guilt of unintentionally hurting Grace or is it something more?

Excerpt:

I grab my meal for the day – only 268 days of real food left… well, 267 now – and my quilt before heading to the crazy room. I pull up the video of the beach and sit on the quilt. While I eat I pretend I'm back at a field trip I took my class on. It was during our unit covering the ocean, we went to the aquarium and, since the beach was close enough (and my kids were begging to let them go), we all had lunch there as a makeshift picnic. The complaints from the parents about sandy clothes were totally worth it. I wipe my eyes and laugh quietly, my kids would tease me for being sappy if they were here. There's a pang deep in my heart. I don't even know if they're alive. If they're suffering. If they're scared. If they hate me for leaving without a goodbye. If Stratt will give them the apology I sent on the Beetles. If they're around to hear it-

My chest tightens. I lay down. I focus on the sound of the waves to drown out my spiraling thoughts and to keep the sobbing at bay. Crying sounds exhausting right now, and I'd like to not be an emotional mess when Rocky finishes his project. Slowly, the waves wash away the panic. I wipe away the tears that managed to fall and let myself believe it's just ocean spray.

A piercing tone cuts through the waves.

I'm on my feet before I can think.

Something is wrong.
