just watched the odyssey! okokok here's my review
I think it pretty good overall. some parts were Really good, others kinda fell flat, so overall averages out to a pretty good
it was also inordinately loud at some points (cyclops sequence), and like had unnecessarily body-horror at another (circe pig transformation). so go in warned, and prepared to shield your ears/eyes.
on that note, it did feel less tense than it should have at many points? it's hard story to adapt and keep that tension going. and sometimes it misses the mark.
a lot of very beautiful shots tho. shoutout cinematographer. they were doing the most. It was much less grey/dull than the trailers made it seem. the viking style ship aside, I really liked the ocean scenes. felt very real, which makes sense given they were actually filmed on the ocean.
it takes itself really REALLY seriously. no humor. at times this is cool. but it does mean Odysseus loses something of his trickster nature idk.
they really do a good job at capturing Odysseus's intelligence and arrogance though. that was good. Matt Damon does a great job. I'll give him that.
In fact, the entire cast all did a good job. but Charlise Theron really felt out of place lol she has such an iphone face im SOrry she took me out of it entirely. Calypso being the only bottle-blonde person in like the entire movie didn't make her feel more mystical, it made her feel fucking weird hahahha.
Tom holland was actually my favourite performance though pop off spidermannn he did so good??
My fav sequence of the entire film was the like "flashback" to infiltrating troy in the trojan horse. It was sooooo tense, very well shot, good sound design etc. I wish more of the movie was like that. yknow the actual odyssey parts. instead of relying on loud noise/body horror/jumpscare to try manufacture tension lol
so yeah. a pretty good/10. I was tempted to say it tries to do too much, but given what it's attempting to cover, it actually does too little on many marks. the movie format just doesn't suit the source material I think. So I think they did the best they could, within a commercial movie framework. I enjoyed it on the whole, but I don't think i'd see it again in a hurry either.
