In William Moulton Marston & H.G. Peter’s origin story of the Amazons in Wonder Woman #1 (1942), Queen Hippolyte and the Amazons are first taken prisoner by Hercules and the Greeks, but then they defeat their captors by beating them with the very chains that had enslaved them.

In Robert Kanigher & H.G. Peter’s retelling of the origin in Wonder Woman #45 (1951), the Amazons beat Hercules and his army with their bare hands.
