Maddie and Mackenzie Ziegler at the ‘Pitch Perfect 2′ world premiere (May 8, 2015)
“Headache.” He pointed towards his temple; shrugging. “What’s your name?”
Amber gave a small nod, clasping her hands in front of her. “Amber.”
Audrey laughed at Amber’s response. “Excellent,” she replied as they drew ever closer to the trees in front of them. “Wanna climb some trees with me?”
Amber smiled up at the woman warmly. She rose her brows at the proposition and nodded, letting go of the woman’s hand when they neared the trees.
Molly wiped a stray tear off of Amber’s cheek, giving her a sort of sad smile. “That’s okay if you can’t talk, we’ll find a way to get those feelings out regardless. I promise.”
Amber gave Molly a small smile and nodded before wrapping her arms tightly around the woman’s middle. “Promise,” she echoed in a whisper.
“Well, that’s good I guess. I always feel bad when I forget someone I’ve met before.” Lee explained. As a kid he’d always hated when he’d already met someone and they’d forgotten about him. He was glad that, so far he hadn’t ended up doing that to any of the kids here. “Well then, as I said, I’m Lee.”
Amber nodded, glancing around the pair. “What do you do?”
“You looked sad.”
“I know but you can’t fight fire with fire. It’s okay to stand up for yourself, but if it really upsets you I want you to come and find me okay?” she nodded. “I know, and I’m not going to put you in there. I know you hate it in there. It would seem silly to put you in there when it’s much better to just talk it out with you.”
Molly suggested going to see her whenever she was upset and Amber nodded slowly. “Okay,” she murmured, wiping her face clear of tears and slowing down her breathing. “But--but what if I can’t talk?” She asked quietly, outwardly glad that Molly had caught her at a moment where her tongue hadn’t frozen.
“Well that was wrong of him, okay? But you my darling need to be the bigger person and hold your head up high and just ignore the haters. We’ll work on how to manage your anger together, don’t you worry. Because say it was somebody else who caught you, they could have put you in isolation sweetie and we don’t want that right?” she explained before scrunching up the tissue. “Good girl.”
Amber looked up at Molly timidly and nodded slowly. “But he was being mean,” she said quietly, eyes darting around the room as though the boy would return. Amber shook her head at the mention of isolation. “I don’t wanna be put in there,” she agreed, although couldn’t help but wonder why Molly hadn’t stuck her in there like any other member of staff would do.
“Who said that?” she asked, suddenly softer, knowing that this was a sensitive area for Amber. She got a tissue out of her purse and held it to Amber’s nose. “Blow.”
Amber shrugged slightly, looking at the floor. “He didn’t say his name. I-I was colouring and he asked who I was drawing and I said,” she swallowed thickly, “my mommy and he laughed and said I would never have one.” Her bottom lip stuck out slightly and when Molly produced a tissue, holding it up to her nose, Amber frowned slightly before blowing out through her nose.
“Amber, why did you spit?” she asked in a serious tone. She couldn’t condone that behaviour from her without a reason. But she didn’t want to get too stern as to upset the little girl.
Amber avoided looking in Molly’s eyes and she chewed on her bottom lip. “He said I would never have a mommy,” she sniffled, wiping her nose on the back of her hand.
Sofia nodded solemnly. “Oh yeah, it’s a well known fact amongst nurses,” she said, before laughing. “How about we go treat ourselves to a bowl?”
Amber rose her brows when the blonde told her it was a fact known among nurses. “Yeah,” she giggle at the mention of getting a bowl for themselves. Amber took the woman’s hand - carefully, avoiding touching her injured finger to anything, and tugged her out of the medical ward.
Audrey nodded, still smiling. “Looks like an excellent choice of direction,” she told Amber, heading in that direction. “You ever climbed a tree?”
Amber walked alongside Audrey, humming slightly, and smirked when she asked if she had climbed a tree. She’d climbed a lot more than that; how else would she have escaped? “Yeah, loads.”
“Alright, alright… it’s okay.” she whispered, kissing Amber’s forehead. “Are you ready to tell me what happened?”
Molly kissed her forehead and Amber breathed out slowly before nestling herself against the woman again. “I spat,” she confessed in a whisper. “And he got mad.”
Molly held the girl close, rubbing her back comfortingly and to help get her breathing back to normal. She wanted to calm her down before she asked what was going on.
Amber held onto Molly’s shirt tightly and closed her eyes, breathing in her scent. She pressed herself further against the woman’s body and whimpered quietly.
“Princess Amber,” Sofia agreed, sticking her packet of stickers back in the pocket of her scrubs. “And you know what brave princesses get? Ice cream.”
Amber ran her other finger over the band aid gently and smiled slightly before looking up at the blonde. She tilted her head at the question asked before smiling at the mention of ice cream. “They do?” She giggled.
Molly knew that sometimes you had to be careful with Amber. She knelt down in front of her and spoke softly. “Would you like a hug, pumpkin?”
Amber’s eyelids were heavy with tears and her breathing came in shuddery, short bursts. At Molly’s question she nodded slightly before colliding her body with Molly’s, burying her face in the woman’s chest.
Audrey held onto Amber’s small hand tightly, swinging their joined arms lightly. They soon made it to the door and Audrey pushed it open for them both to step through. “Which way do you want to go?”
Amber walked, getting closer to Audrey with each step, and smiled with relief once they were outside. She looked up when Audrey asked her which way she wanted to go and she pointed right, to an area with a couple of trees grouped together.
