Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.

Not all kids are able to read at the same level at the same age, but on average, reading a book with several hundred pages at age, let's say, seven, is nothing unusual!

My very first "big book" was 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, I must have been 7 when my dad got it for me. I was fascinated by what stories he read to me before bedtime so I was eager to learn to read on my own since I was in preschool (he taught me the basics when I was 5). Reading it became a kind of before bed ritual: I would brush my teeth, put my pajamas on, get in bed and grab the book to read at least 10 pages every night. I had post-its to mark words I didn't understand, and a pocket dictionary on my nightstand.

I hated that book with my guts 🤣 but god knows I learned a lot from it. Kids are capable of amazing things, if you give them the tools and you allow them to become their own person.

i don't really want to weight in on the "using big words in your writing is ableist" discourse happening on tiktok because i'm like 90% certain it's an anti-intellectual psyop to stir up drama in online circles to promote the use of ai to summarize literally everything and thus feeding the LLMs and lowering the populace's mistrust of such tools but i also have to say: dictionaries and thesauruses are the most accessible they've ever been. if you use an e-reader of any kind you can look up a word without leaving the page. there's a plethora of online dictionaries and if you just type a word + "meaning" into google it'll usually give you a definition. we used to have pocket dictionaries we used when reading in class. i have two on my shelf right now that i used in high school. stop letting the fascists purposefully misuse anti-ableism rhetoric to trick you into never thinking again.

Someone who tells you that something should be "easier" to read for you to understand isn't making you a favor, it's actually telling you to your face that you are stupid, is telling you "you can't digest this, why don't I chew it for you, take out what I think you can't handle and then give you the regurgitated product? It's for your own good!"

There is nothing wrong with "campy", "silly", brainless entertainment the exact same way there is nothing wrong with "junk" food, unless it is the *only* thing you use as entertainment because the alternative makes it uncomfortable to keep living as you do.

Push through, you *can* handle big words, you *can* handle difficult shit, there's no "but I am just a little girl". The girl can be little but the claws are not.
