Hi everybody!! I first started with crocheting, which i swore i’d stick to… until i saw one sweater pattern and thought “how hard could it be?” (spoiler: hard enough to almost make me quit. twice.)

i’ve also developed a completely healthy habit of buying yarn with zero projects in mind. like, yes, i might use that neon mohair one day. maybe.

i don’t do gauge swatches. i live on the edge. sometimes it works, sometimes it’s a crime against textiles.

anyway, i’m finally getting decent at this and might even start designing my own patterns soon (after i finish the five WIPs glaring at me).

Crochet Beginnings

I started with crochet because it seemed “easy.” Spoiler: it wasn’t.

Blankets became triangles, scarves became… abstract art. Somehow, though, I survived and learned to love messing up. Crochet was my gateway drug into yarn obsession, and yes, I bought more skeins than I could ever use.

It was the best way to get into the world of crafts- in my opinion- and I hope these videos and first tutorials I followed will help you out like it did for me:)

Gauge Swatches Are a Myth

I know gauge swatches are important. I just… don’t do them. I’m going to get to the point where I will tell myself “This one will fit fine,” I’ll begin to play fabric roulette soon. Hopefully this Olga Sweater turn out perfect but maybe it’ll end up being better suited for a toddler—or a tent. It’ll be fine though (I hope). I call it “creative freedom.” In the future it might just be part of my knitting process.

The Universal Yarn Problem

Some people collect postcards. I collect yarn( like most knitters). Laceweight mohair, 8/4 cotton, random skeins of variegated wool that don’t match anything I own. I always tell myself I’ll use them “eventually,” which, in knitting time, means maybe five years from now. There’s something addictive about the textures and colors—even when I have zero plans for them (and five skeins cost 50$). My next goal is to actually knit the yarn I own before adopting more. (Key word: try.)

Knitting takes forever but it’s always helpful to try and plan out my next project (is what I like to tell myself when buying new yarn).

How I Almost Gave Up (Two times)

Knitting and I didn’t start smoothly. I came from crochet, where you can improvise endlessly and fix mistakes with one pull. Knitting? Not so forgiving. My first attempt at ANYTHING looked like it had gone through emotional distress. I almost quit—multiple times—but eventually, something clicked. The rhythm, the repetition, the satisfaction of fabric forming from two sticks and a string. Now I’m hooked (and not just because I already bought too much yarn to stop).

I’ve now started with the Olga sweater by PetiteKnits and I’m excited to see how it goes as I learn new techniques!
