Can Renewable Energy Power The World? A Review

What if the world transitioned from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources for electricity generation? Can the U.S. alone shoot for and achieve such an ambitious goal?

According to a 47 peer-reviewed consensus from 13 independent groups brought together by Stanford University, the answer is yes. The paper does a broad sweep of the world, taking into account the potential each renewable energy technology and whether or not individual regions can survive completely on renewables.

The paper concludes that virtually all of the world’s electricity demands can be met by renewables by mid-century.

100% Renewable Energy, Is It Possible?

A report by the LUT University in Finland and Energy Watch Group, a nonprofit in Germany, stimulates a global energy transition to renewables in the heat, electricity, water sanitation/desalinization,and transport sectors by 2050.

The study demonstrated a sustainable energy system that is more cost effective and efficient than our current nuclear-based and fossil energy systems. It also suggests that greenhouse gas emissions in energy systems can potentially reduce to zero by mid-century, or even earlier.

With the world population expected to grow from 7.7 billion to 9.7 billion in 2050, analysts expect the energy demand to grow by nearly 2% annually to match the high standards of living. In order to match these demands, the LUT/EWG paper developed a roadmap according to which nations can possibly transition to 100% renewable power.

Here are some key findings outlined in the study:

·The report emphasizes that energy production needs to be centralized to make the most of locally available renewable energy sources.

·The 100% renewable energy system will utilize a mix of renewables: wind power (18%), solar power (69%), bioenergy (6%), geothermal energy (2%), and hydro (3%).

·The world will need to transition from fossil fuels to biofuels like algae fuels or biodiesel. By following this roadmap, we can potentially replace carbon-intensive energy options in the heat and power sector by 2030.

·The 100% renewable energy will also employ nearly 35 million people around the globe.
