the idea of john giving gale his name, calling for gale using his own name, introducing gale to others using his own name, eventually getting gale to introduce himself to others using john’s name, just so that john can be the only one who says “gale”… that shit is crack to me.

thinking about king cleven tonight… saint cleven… a man of morals and composure, a stalwart presence in the face of adversity, a paragon of virtue and discipline who seemingly has no ambitions for power but ends up a leader of men through the loyalty and respect he inspires in others.

a man who holds himself to such high standards surely expects the same of others, and he does for the most part. except for bucky. when bucky shirks his duties, gale arranges for them to simply not be his duties anymore. when bucky leaves a bar in disrepair, gale cleans up behind him with an apology and a grimace and a shitty gift that probably negated the apology. when bucky crashes the band’s performance in front of the upper brass, gale barely hides a smile behind his hand. when bucky makes to start a bar fight, gale gets up to finish it for him.

bucky may be pulling gales pigtails, but it’s not in the classic way of prompting negative reactions out of a lack of attention—lacking attention was never the problem. bucky does it out of the sheer delight of getting to prove to himself and everyone around them that he’s gale’s exception. gale doesn’t just let john’s bullshit slide, he’s amused by it. he engages with it, enables it, and defends it. because he really believed that if there were two pilots left in the air, it’d be the two of them. fuck.
