Saturday MorningÂ
Jonathan Fatu always deemed himself the smarter twin. Especially when it came to girls. He lounged back in the worn leather chair of their shared room, arms crossed and a smug grin plastered on his face. Watching as Josh paced back and forth like a man possessed.Â
âYou let Dejah walk out⊠just let Kayla talk her shit and said absolutely nothing.âÂ
Josh sucked his teeth and continued to pace.Â
âDid she even answer any of your calls?â Jon asked, already knowing the answer.Â
Josh stopped pacing and threw himself into his bed. He let out a loud groan and threw his arm over his head. âNah, man, and I called her about 10 times.â He let out a long breath and rubbed both hands down his face. âItâs not even like I did anything wrong. I just, fuck man. I ainât expect Kayla to show up.âÂ
âAnd tell the girl you wanna be with that you was tryna hit last night?âÂ
Josh sat up fast. âIt wasnât like that.âÂ
Jon rolled his eyes. âYou think Dejah knows that? She def. thinks something is up with you and Kayla now.âÂ
âSo what Iâm supposed to do now?! â Josh said, looking just as frustrated as he sounded.Â
âMan, let her cool off. You tried calling her and she obviously ainât pick up because sheâs pissed.â Jon stood and walked closer to their door and opened it. âReverse the rolls, Uce. How would you feel if you was in Dejahâs position?â Â
Silence fell over the room after Jon left, leaving Josh with his thoughts.Â
Josh sat back on his bed, the quiet of the room pressing in around him. He ran a hand through his hair, heart heavy with the weight of his own mistakes. He knew he had to fix this, he just didnât know how.
Dejah was curled up in her bed, wrapped up in her favorite Hello Kitty blanket like it could shield her from the outside world. Her cousin, Trinity, was lounging at the end of her bed, reading through one of the many magazines Dejah had in her room.Â
âYou gon continue to mope around all day or what?â
Trinity asked after popping her gum. Dejah didnât answer. She just pulled the blanket up a little higher and let out a soft sigh.
Trinity raised an eyebrow and flipped another page of her magazine. âSo we not talking now? Thatâs how we doing it? Youâre phone done went off at least 6 times since I been here. And I know it aint Myra ass, she barely be having minutes.Â
Dejah shifted under the blanket, her fingers tightening around the fabric. âItâs nothing.â
âIt aint nothing if it got you this mopey. Itâs Saturday, we're supposed to be at the mall, looking at cute clothes and boys, but instead weâre here, listening to sad ass songs.â She trialed off as she looked over at Dejahâs boombox and rolled her eyes. âIs that Alicia Keys playing again?"
âPlease drop it, Trin,â Dejah muttered as her phone started to buzz again. Dejah and Trinity made quick eye contact before they both leaped for the phone. Obviously, with Trinity being the more athletic one, she was able to snatch the phone off the nightstand and run into Dejahâs closet and shut the door.Â
âTrinity!â Dejah shouted as she banged on the door. âOpen the door!âÂ
âGirl, relax. Iâm just trying to be a good big cousin and see who got you all in your feelings.âÂ
Dejah scoffed. âIâm not in my feelings.â She mumbled.Â
âSo then I can listen to this voicemail from somebody named Josh?âÂ
âNo!â Dejah rushed toward the closet door again, yanking the handle, but Trinity had it locked from the inside. âTrin, I swear - â
âOoh, girl. Heâs desperate.â Trinity giggled. âAwe, he sounds so sad!âÂ
âTrinity!â Dejah called out, pulling on the door even harder.Â
âDee, just call me back, please,â Trinity said in Joshâs deep voice. âWhy didnât you tell me you had a boyfriend, Dejah!âÂ
Dejah let out a groan and threw herself on her bed. âBecause I donât have one!âÂ
Trinity finally came out of the closet and waved Dejahâs phone. âDoesnât sound like it to me.â She said, and Dejah rolled her eyes, âWho is this Josh, and if heâs not your boyfriend, whatâs the deal?âÂ
Dejah sat up and hugged her knees to her chest. âItâs... complicated.â
Trinity plopped down beside her, tossing the phone onto the bed. âComplicated how? Either you like him or you donât. Either yâall together or you not.â
Dejah rested her chin on her knees, her voice low. âI like him, and I thought he liked me back.âÂ
Trinity nodded slowly, letting that sit for a second. âOkay⊠so what happened?â
Dejah hesitated. âHis- his ex showed up while we were hanging out yesterday.â Trinityâs eyes widened, but she stayed silent and let Dejah continue. âI mean, it was nice, you know, I felt like he actually liked me back, and then Kayla started talking that slick shit, and he said nothing. Just let her imply that I was some rebound and that he was still trying to hook up with her.âÂ
âAnd whatâd you do?â Trinity asked, already knowing but needing to hear it out loud.
âI left,â Dejah whispered with a shrug. âI didnât know what else to do. I already felt embarrassed.âÂ
âEmbarrassed for what? He asked you out, and that jealous hoe ruined yâallâs date.â Â
Dejah groaned and lay back on the bed. âIt wasnât a date exactly. I uh- Iâve been tutoring him and the library was closed yesterday, so he took me to get a smoothie, wasnât really a date.âÂ
âGirl, it was a date. And if he werenât feeling you, he wouldnât be calling your phone back to back.âÂ
Dejah stayed quiet as she bit her lip. IF that was a date, it was the best date she had been on until Kayla showed her face. And Trinity was right, if Josh didnât feel anything for her, he wouldn't have been calling her back to back, but then again, maybe he didnât wanna lose her as a tutor. And that part scared her the most, because what if he already knew about her crush on him and used it to his advantage?Â
Trinity noticed the look on her cousin's face and immediately started to shake her head. âNope, whatever thoughts you got in that pretty head, get them out ASAP. IF and that's a big IF, he is playing you, then fuck him, toss his ass to the side. and I can finally hook you up with Jason.âÂ
âJason from Church?â Dejah asked with a slight giggle, and Trinity grinned while nodding her head.Â
âHell yeah, girl, he fine as hell.â Both girls laughed. âSo what you gonâ do? Wallow in this room all day, or are we going ot the mall?âÂ
Dejah bit her bottom lip as she looked at her cousin. âI could use a soft pretzel right now.âÂ
âYay!â Trinity cheered as she humped from the bed. âI know exactly what you should wear!â Trinity rushed back into Dejahâs closet and pulled out the tiniest shirt she could find. âHere,â She said, handing over the shirt to Dejah, who scoffed and took it.Â
âTrin!â She laughed as she held the shirt up to her body. It would cover up all her good parts and left her stomach out,Â
âGirl, what? You got a banging body, show that shit off.âÂ
Dejah rolled her eyes and walked over to grab her bathrobe and shower cap. âFine, stay here while I shower.âÂ
Trinity grinned widely, watching Dejah head to the bathroom. âDonât take too long! We got a mall to hit and pretzels to eat.â
Dejah couldnât have been more grateful for her cousin. While she did get a few stares and wolf whistles for her outfit, it took her mind off of Josh, at least for a little while.
The pair had just walked out of Abercrombie & Fitch, and Trinity was swinging her bags dramatically like she was in some music video while Dejah trailed behind her, a soft pretzel in one hand and a lemonade in the other.Â
âOoh! Let's sit over there.â Trinity said, pointing to the table that was to the right of the Foot Locker. âAll the cute boys should be coming from there.âÂ
Dejah giggled and rolled her eyes. âYouâre ridiculous.âÂ
âWhatever,â Trinity huffed as she plopped down in a chair. âItâs prime real estate over here. I need me a boo thang, and we need to get you more options.âÂ
Dejah laughed and sat across from her, setting her shopping bag on the floor and taking a sip of her lemonade. âI donât need options, Trin.â
âYes, you do,â Trinity said, like it was a fact. Then, suddenly, a sly smirk appeared on her face. âMmmh, now thatâs what Iâm talking about. Donât look now, but thereâs some fine butterscotch walking your way.âÂ
âWhat?â Dejah asked, ignoring Trin and turning her head anyway. The second her eyes landed on him, her stomach flipped. Her eyes were wide as she turned her attention back to Trinity.Â
âGirl, you look like you seen a ghost! Wait, is that him? Dejah Monroe! He is FIONE! He got a brother?âÂ
Dejah was frantically looking around for some sort of exit plan while Trinity looked on with amusement. âWhatever youâre thinking of planning, you better do it quick. Homeboy coming in hot.â Â
Dejah stood up, ready to bolt into Victoriaâs Secret. The second she turned around, she bumped directly into Josh.Â
âWhoa!â Josh exclaimed as he reached his arms out to steady her. âYou good?â He asked, and once again, Dejahâs tongue was stuck in her throat, because even though she was mad at him, he was still, in Trinityâs words, FIONE.Â
Dejah took a half step back, but not before catching a whiff of his cologne, something warm and familiar that made her heart betray her a little. âIâm fine.â She whispered after clearing her throat.Â
âGood,â Josh said. An awkward silence fell over the two of them. âIâm actually glad I ran into you.â He said, lifting his left arm to scratch at the back of his neck. âCan we just talk, please?â
âJosh, look -âÂ
âIâm sorry.â He said, cutting her off. âI shoulda stopped Kayla the moment she started talking.âÂ
Dejah sighed and crossed her arms. She could feel Trinity staring at the two of them. âJosh, you donât owe me anything.âÂ
âDonât do that,â Josh said, taking a step closer to her. He frowned as he noticed her tensing up. âDejah, I know you think -âÂ
âI donât know what to think.â She said as she cut him off with a huff. âI mean, weâve never spoken before, and then suddenly youâre asking me to tutor you and flirting likeâŠâ She trailed off and shook her head. âIf youâre only talking to me to piss Kayla off, you can lose my number.âÂ
Joshâs eyebrows pulled together, his expression tightening with something like frustration, not at her, but at himself. âIâm not.â He said after pulling himself together. âThat's not what this is.âÂ
Dejah raised an eyebrow. âThen what is it?â
Josh let out a frustrated groan. âI donât know. But I just like being around you.âÂ
Trinity let out a squeal before she covered her head with her mouth. Dejah side-eyed her but didnât say anything. She looked back at Josh, chewing on the inside of her cheek like she was trying to decide whether or not to walk away.
âI know I fucked up yesterday, and maybe it donât make sense to you, us talking or whatever, but I promise it wasnât some setup. I wanted to hang with you. I still do.â Josh took a step forward, gently grabbing her hand. âCan I get another chance?âÂ
Dejahâs breath hitched as she looked down at their hands. Joshâs fingers curled softly around hers, giving her a little squeeze.Â
âAnother chanceâŠâ She trailed off, her voice barely above a whisper.Â
Josh nodded, his gaze steady and honest. âYeah, I wanna prove to you that Kayla is my past.âÂ
Dejah hesitated; the walls she had built up in the past day had started to tremble. She finally nodded and squeezed his hand back. âOkay,â she said softly, âOne more chance.â
