AMEJA presents the screening of award-winning documentary film “From Queens to Cairo” by independent filmmaker Sherif Sadek. This will be followed by a Q&A session with him.

Sherif Sadek is an Egyptian American filmmaker and lives in Queens. He was nominated as Best Director of a Short Documentary for his film at the 2013 Madrid International Film Festival. His film won the Best Feature Documentary at the Queens World Film Festival in March 2013.

About the film: Sadek travels with his family from New York to Egypt in January 2012, for the first anniversary of the Revolution. Armed with a Nikon D7000, he attempts to find the challenges that lie ahead on the road to democracy. He records his travel throughout Cairo, filming slums and demonstrations, social workers and taxi drivers, Liberation Square and the pyramids in the outskirts.

He describes the reasons for shooting this documentary: "As an American Egyptian, making this film is very personal to me. With the recent political events in Egypt, I wanted to experience history in the making and show the world the humanity, passion, and courage of the Egyptian, no matter their political beliefs."

Professor Ann Cooper, former NPR correspondent, will supervise the event.

Lisa Goldman, senior editor with Open Zion, and contributor to +972, will be talking about Israel, Palestine, and the occupation.

Open Zion will foster an open and unafraid conversation about Israel, Palestine, and the Jewish future. We believe in a two-state solution in accordance with the liberal Zionist principles articulated in Israel’s declaration of independence, which promises a Jewish state that ensures “complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex” and “freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture.” But we also believe in respectful argument with those who disagree; we aim not to draw red lines but to debate them."

Matt Apuzzo and Adam Goldman, winners of the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Journalism, will be talking about the NYPD surveillance of the Muslim community in New York City.

Adam Goldman is a reporter for the Associated Press’ investigative team in Washington, D.C., where he has focused on national security since 2010. He has broken many major terrorism-related stories such as identity of the courier who led the CIA to Osama bin Laden’s compound in Pakistan and many important details about the raid; the lack of accountability at the CIA when officers make grave mistakes; and the discovery of a secret CIA prison in Romania. His reporting on an al-Qaida plot in Yemen revealed the U.S. was facing a serious terror threat to aviation as the White House said otherwise. For reporting on that story, the Justice Department secretly seized Goldman's phone records. Goldman is the recipient of numerous journalism awards, including the Harvard Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, a George Polk Award, the Paul Tobenkin Memorial Award and the Edgar A. Poe Award from the White House Correspondents’ Association.  

Matt Apuzzo is a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The Associated Press in Washington. He has revealed CIA misconduct, widespread cheating on FBI certification tests and the location of a secret CIA prison in Romania. Formerly AP's legal affairs writer, Apuzzo covered the trials of Sen. Ted Stevens and White House aide Scooter Libby, the Virginia Tech shooting and the conclusion of the FBI’s long-running Amerithrax case. He has covered corruption in the Senate, influence on Wall Street, and a mobster who built an empire on the nation's richest fishing port. A graduate of Colby College with a degree in biology, he lives in Washington with his wife and two children.

Enemies Within, a new book from award-winning journalists, Adam Goldman and Matt Apuzzo, is an inside look at the New York City Police Department and its controversial Muslim surveillance program. Goldman and Apuzzo received a Pulitzer Prize for their investigative reporting on the post-9/11 NYPD, revealing a vast network of undercover officers and informants dispatched to keep tabs on Muslims in New York and beyond.

Gazan journalist Abeer Ayyoub will be talking about her experience as a reporter in Gaza.

Abeer is 25 and grew up in Gaza - she began working for the Israeli newspaper Haaretz just prior to the last Gaza war in November 2012. She was one of the journalists who was banned from working with Israeli media earlier this year, and now writes frequently for Al Monitor.

Award-winning photojournalist Nicole Tung will be presenting her work and talking about her experience in Libya and Syria, with a focus on the civilian plight.

She will be addressing the dangers and difficulties of covering Syria as a freelancer, and how she has managed to do it until now. 

Nicole Tung studied journalism and history (NYU '09) and freelances for the New York Times and other international newspapers and magazines.

Since 2011, she is covering the Arab revolutions in North Africa and the Middle East.
