An actual conversation I just had with the financial aid/tuition office:

me: Hello, I’ve run into a financial issue and cannot afford to make my payment installation on the 27th. I know there was a late fee for delayed payments but I do not know how to access that. When this happened last year, I was charged daily overdraft fees until I got paid. I’d like to avoid this and just pay the late fee. I’d appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

tuition office: When you signed up for the payment plan you agreed to payments being due on the 27th of each month. I can work with you on this month's payment but going forward you need to pay on the due date. When can you make this month's payment?

me: I know that, I am asking to instate the late fee mentioned in the contract I signed, rather than being over drafted. I will be able to pay on the 6th when I get paid again.

tuition office: can you pay this by 3/2?
