veilguard has given me so much to work with, but the main thought on my mind? even though the elves of the dales are far removed from the elves of arlathan, there's echoes of that history preserved in the dales' culture. devotion to solas / fen'harel for freeing slaves sits side-by-side to worship of the elven gods. the emerald knights roaming with wolf companions and the wearing of vallaslin to honor the gods are the prime examples, but i'm gonna go digging to see if i can find more

head empty, except for thoughts of how many times arel's been called 'lord inquisitor' and gently corrects others because of how he continuously views himself as a hunter / soldier and an equal to the people under his command rather than a political figure

#TBT.#something something he was the sort of person to take action where others idled #because he didn't want to sit around and wait where action was clearly needed #and i think that's something he struggled with as inquisitor; the politics of it all #the posturing; the debating; having to sit to wait for 'official' approval to act in certain situations #he'd rather ask for forgiveness than ask for permission #and it's a rather hard habit to kick

something something arel took on the orlesian surname d'ameride when he became inquisitor for the ease of the orlesians he was in constant contact with at the time. his name then got mistranslated once from orlesian to the common tongue to ameridan around 200-300 years after his disappearance and that's the name that's stuck in the history books ever since

i still have to tidy stuff up here, but i do want to remind everyone that this is a heavily canon divergent portrayal of ameridan. he deserved more nuance than what bioware gave him. he carries a lot of anti-orlais and anti-chantry sentiment ( not anti-andrastian, even though his thoughts on the religion are complicated ) and drakon's 'friendship' with the elves of that time is on thin ice at most. they stopped being friends, in ameridan's mind, before the first divine sat on the sunburst throne

even though he likely keeps up a face of unity to most inquisitors, especially human ones, anyone would be able to tell how worn down he was by his duty then. he was doing all he could to defend mages, the dales, and the cultures of the peoples orlais conquered from orlais itself. he tried his hardest to keep orlais from becoming what it did -- even though he knew it was inevitable :)

#TBT.#ameridan's not a fool; he knew what he was to orlais #a battering ram; a pawn; someone to show 'unity' despite none existing #he used his power as inquisitor to protect those orlais wanted to control #taking in many from the tribes of southern thedas to safeguard them and the remnants of their cultures #even if it put him at odds with orlais and/or drakon directly #it was worth it in his eyes

i don't know who needs to hear it, but ameridan would be so proud and, in verses where he manages to make it out alive for a bit, fully back any and all elven revolts in the cities across thedas 🥰

#TBT.#this is especially so in halamshiral / orlais in general #he doesn't allow others to see him in such a way #but he's fucking angry #especially because there's a city and palace with drakon's legacy and heraldry all over /where ameridan's home once sat/#he didn't spend his lifetime taking blow after blow from both the emperor and orlais' people #to watch his people lose everything they once had #and be scattered to the winds #for the second or third time in their collective history #he's so fucking angry #and he'd burn that fucking palace to the ground if he knew it would do anything #but i think ultimately he'd focus on the descendants of his people #reaching out to the alienages and the clans of orlais #and to clan ghilain (his direct descendants through his eldest daughter)

despite his own complicated relationship with it, ameridan was an elven noble ( even though ghilain was considered a minor house / family ) and was an equal to many in the orlesian empire at the time of its conception as a foreign dignitary. and i think it’s something he rightfully deserves to flex on orlesians past and present

Ameridan Ghilan voted softest man of the Divine Age, big ass trees, past and present looking each other in the eye and realizing nothing has changed, a man extremely excited about buckles (relatable), the passage of time inexorably smoothing out the uncomfortable details, LOVE!!, and other stuff I guess.
