“Your brothers are clearly out of line on the sibling code,” she teased. “Teddy didn’t ruin them, they just strayed off the beaten path.” She leaned her head against his and stayed there for a moment. “You’d miss me a lot more than that, and you know know it.”

“A few months?” Kitty winced as she thought. “I don’t know. Long enough to miss home but not long enough to feel trapped. How about you?”

She nodded, though she couldn’t quite understand the long enough to miss home. She’d been away from home for so long she didn’t remember what it was like to not miss home. “I’ve only been at SHIELD for a few months too. Away from home for... much longer.”

“Neither do I, but you started it by having sex in the first place.”  Billy protested with  a pout on his face. “I ate like this morning, plus I can’t eat if my stupid appetite’s gone.” He whined a bit, complying to her demand to sit. He moved his crutches to lean on a different chair,  leaning forward.  "I’ve  been moved  from the position of little brother to dog, apparently.“

She rolled her eyes. “No, you started it by not knocking. Is that something you picked up from your little brothers?” she asked, pouting. “I don’t care if you ate this morning, you haven’t ate since. So, c’mon, food.” She reached into the fridge and pulled out ingredients for a recipe her Mom used to make. It was quick and simple. “Well, if the shoe fits.”

“Hey–hey–hey, watch the leg!“ Billy whined, trying to keep up with the way she was pulling him even if she was trying to be careful with him. “And you probably haven’t gotten laid since you’ve come to this school, I can wait.” He huffed, still trying to not fall while they made their way down the hallway. “Plus, I’m really not that hungry now.” He protested, definitely not a big fan of much after seeing his big sister in bed with a chick.

America rolled her eyes, but slowed down a bit anyway. “I don’t really want to be discussing my sex life with my little brother, thank you very much.” She rolled her eyes again. “You just said you hadn’t eaten. At least eat something like popcorn to make me happy.” She steered him into the kitchen and forced him to gently sit down in a chair. “Stay.”

“Trust me, I wouldn’t be here if I saw anything else.” Billy murmured,  rubbing his cheek as he grabbed  onto his crutches again when the doors opened. “It wasn’t that important, really” He sighed, moving to exit. “I just… wanted to talk.” Turning to look at her again, he gave a bit of a smile though it was much sadder than he’d intended. “You know, about stuff.” He shrugged a bit, “I figured food would be a good  addition to talking—I didn’t really eat much today.”

At his admission that he hadn’t eaten much, she gripped his elbow and started to carefully frog march him towards the kitchen. “No, it’s important. We haven’t... talked since you were in the hospital. We need to.” The smile she gave him back was just as sad. “We’ll get you food and we’ll talk about everything we need to talk about.” She probably wasn’t going to eat. The thought of them talking about what had gone unsaid between them for so long was ruining any appetite she might have had.

Billy just let out a slow groan the moment she made it into the elevator, leaning up against the side of it before tossing her a glance. “Yeah, but I think I need a few hours before I can unsee—” He motioned to her in such a way to mean her boobs.  He didn’t want to see boobs.  He was very much gay for that reason. “Appetite lost.” He mumbled, raising a hand to hide the face his face was glowing bright red up to his ears. A moment passed before he’d take another look at her.  A childish pout spread across his face as he looked to the side. “… Sorry.”

“I need a few hours and a couple bottles of tequila to get over the fact that you saw my boobs,” America said matter-of-factly. “Be grateful you didn’t see anything else.” She leaned against the wall of the elevator. “It’s fine. Just... you wouldn’t have come this late unless it was really important. So... what was it?”

Nope, he’s not looking back. He’s not stopping. He wants a one-way ticket straight to hell. He could hear her calling from behind, but it’s not enough to make him think about going back. “Sorry! Go back to uh—whatever you were doing!” He shouted in reply. Billy had seen enough of his sister in more ways that one today. Maybe ice cream would make a good substitution for eye bleach when eaten in bulk. “I’ll talk to you tomorrow!” He shouted defiantly, heading toward the elevator and slipping inside while mashing the close door button.

She raced down the hallway and slipped into the elevator right before the doors slid shut. “Nope. You’re more important that some girl I found in town. Plus, pretty sure the mood was killed the moment you opened the door.” She crossed her arms, staring at him. “Let’s go to the kitchen and get you as much ice cream as you want.” She was steadfastly ignoring the fact that her brother--her little brother!--had seen her naked.

“What? The door wasn’t lock—” Billy took a moment to just… well, stare. He hadn’t exactly seen something like this before and it was definitely a lot different from the stuff he’d been acclimated to. “Uuuuuuhm.” His big mouth just hung open before he turned on a dime even with his crutches. “ǀωαηηαgєтσυтσfнєяєǀωαηηαgєтσυтσfнєяєǀωαηηαgєтσυтσfнєяє—” A slur of words stumbled out of his mouth as a crude spell, trying to make something happen to carry him away. Far, far away. Nope, he wasn’t in the mood for raiding the fridge now. He needed eye bleach and maybe a little bit of brain soap to go along with it. Sounded like a wonderful idea.

America stumbled out of bed. “Sorry,” she said to the girl. “It’s just my brother wouldn’t have come this late unless it was something really important andIgottago.” She quickly got dressed and ran out the door, throwing her tousled hair up into a ponytail. She cursed herself for not remembering to lock the door before she and Lily stumbled into bed together. “Billy!” she called. “Billy Kaplan, you stay right where you are.”

If only Billy  could rewind time to the first time he’d done this— sneaking into America’s room this late at night. It wasn’t nearly as late and  he wasn’t quite as worried as he’d been  during the first attempt at this. Crutches made it hard to be sneaky, though he wasn’t necessarily worrying about not being caught. He had little consequence  of getting caught in the end.  He nudged the door open, waltzing  (more like hobbling)  his way in to look at his sister. He shifted onto his good foot, making sure his shirt was  pulled down to cover  the wound on his side well enough. “I hope you’re decent because I’m coming in—actually, I don’t care because I’m your little brother in the first place.”

                “Hey, wanna go raid the kitchen with me?”

America cursed, pulling up the covers over her bare chest. “Holy shit, Billy, whatever happened to knocking!” The girl beside her also covered her chest, seemingly embarrassed. America glanced at her. “Sorry... Um. Lily, this is my brother, who has the worst timing ever.” She glowered at Billy. She did want to raid the kitchen with her brother, but could he have picked a better time when she wasn’t getting laid for the first time in months?

“Our version of God, I guess. Except the Demiurge is a real being. We don’t know what he looks like, only that he exists.” She shrugged. “Kinda hard to explain.” She rolled her eyes. “You’re far from innocent, babe.”

“Interesting.” Kate shrugged as well. She wasn’t a really religious person. “We can just leave it at that. And I’m hurt! I feel like I have a bad reputation I have done nothing to deserve.” She tried to keep a straight face, but after a second Kate laughed and shook her head.

Rachel nodded, “it’s okay, we don’t have to talk. I can leave if you want to sleep, or stay if you want to sleep, or we could I don’t know, raid the kitchen or something if you don’t want to sleep. Up to you.”

“...Raiding the kitchen for food actually sounds really good,” America said, shutting her book. “I don’t want to sleep quite yet.” There was a chance the nightmares could come back if she went to sleep now, and she didn’t want that.

              “Oh yeah, having brothers is really novel alright.”                    Billy dramatically rolled his eyes, “They're bigger brats.”             He snorted, shoving his playfully and throwing his hands around her neck.                       He hung on, trying to drag her down to a hunch. “My family’s always                     been super weird, this is nothing.” He tried to ruffle up her hair                            in the process of messing with her. Was he doing the                                   little brother thing right yet? He was trying, at least.

            “Maybe I have pictures, maybe I don’t!                    A magician never reveals his secrets!”

She chuckled. “For me, it is. Remember, I lost my family at 6. I always wanted my moms to adopt more when I was younger.” She laughed at his attempt to drag her down to his level. “Your family is still relatively normal compared to mine.” She laughed, letting him ruffle her hair. “You’re adorable, how did I get such an adorable little brother?”

She backed up a step, giving a startled laugh at her student’s enthusiasm. “Thought you might say that. Alright, America. Let’s see what you’ve got for me tonight.” Carol fetched the practice hoops from a storage box she’d installed on the edge of the field, and took off.

America leaped after Carol, watching the other woman. She lazily worked her way through the course that Sam and Carol had set up. With each round, she sped up a bit, testing herself. She was still trying to prove herself to her mothers, even though they’d been dead for years. She finally halted in front of Carol. “Want to throw the hoops?”

Matt grins, “Ah, so now the story changes. That right there, is cross-examination 101, catch your witness in a lie, let them dig deeper, then exploit it. If you can discredit your witness, their testimony, no matter how damaging, will be thrown out because obviously what they say cannot be trusted.”

He shrugs, “It depends, if the other side calls for you to take the side via a summons to witness, then yes, you do. But there are ways to fight that. However, taking the stand in your own defence is never a good option, and should be avoided at all costs.”

She knew this was why Professor Murdock didn’t let them have much time to memorize their parts. “Is discrediting a witness typically a good way to go about winning a case?”

She laughed. “I knew you were gonna ask that. Yeah, actually, I got the clearance today. We can go up after drills. If you’re okay with that, I mean.”

America leaped into the air and fist pumped. “Yes!” She fell back to earth and grinned at Carol. “Of course I want to go up! I’ve been looking forward to this since you told me you’d try to get the clearance!”

She nods, “You’re welcome. Yeah, I know, don’t worry about it.” Rachel fidgets, “My nightmares are like a horror movie, honestly.” She’s not sure she’ll talk about her nightmares with America or anyone, not when most of the people she dreams of are perfectly fine here. She smiles, pushing her hair out of her face. “Yeah, you too…if you need to talk.”  

She took a deep breath. “Horror movies I can understand.” She shook her head. “I don’t really want to talk about it, but thanks for the offer. Watching your mothers die at the age of six and then having reoccurring nightmares about it isn’t something most people want to hear about.
