A Word From Meraki…

‘Ello! Welcome to America’s Orphanage, an AU blog made by yours truly, @merakislaughter !

This AU is based off a post I made awhile ago;

“Hear me out:

Countryhumans AU where America runs an orphanage and takes care of the American states, territories, and micronations.

DC is USA’s only biological kid. (This makes DC America’s heir.)

(West) Germany, Cuba, and others (Give me a break, I’m too lazy to search for all of them.) were also at the orphanage at one point.

Maybe something happened that made Cuba bitter at America?

The older states help America with the younger.

Because US of A is filthy rich, the orphanage resembles more of a mansion.

Some people spread negative rumors about the orphanage, mostly because practically none of the kids have gotten adopted.

America gets ticked off at the rumors, especially the ones blaming the kids.

USA still does his regular jobs. (Military, UN, Countryhuman-ing, yadda yadda yadda.)

I could probably go on about this for a while, the possibilities of this AU are endless. But alas, I’m lazy and want food. You can add to the list.

This AU is separate from my @countryhuman-apartments one.

Also, the horridly love @the-everlasting-one will be helping me with this blog. I’ve only been American for a couple of months, so I don’t know much about the individual states. She’s been a big help with that.

Who’s been at the orphanage the longest

“That would be me,” Virginia answered. His tone of voice was neutral, not conveying if he was disappointed, angry, or happy at the fact, “I was here before America even realized he was starting an orphanage.”

How did the first thirteen colonies get there?

“Let’s see here…” America trailed off, shuffling through a pile of old looking papers.

Virginia: Both parents perished in Jamestown, unable to survive the incredibly new colony’s winter. New Hampshire: Abandoned by mother who didn’t want to be associated with a child born out of wedlock. Massachusetts: Mother accused of being a witch and executed. Father- who accused his lover of witchcraft in the first place— left him due to believing he was a witch’s son. Maryland: Lost parents in the Plundering Time to an unknown fate; got separated from them during the takeover of the capitol. Connecticut: Mother tragically passed away during birth. A couple years later, Connecticut’s father died in the Pequot War. Rhode Island: Fell sick and parents thought he wouldn’t live even a couple days after he was born, so they abandoned him in a woods near America’s house; not being able to bear the thought of seeing him dead. North & South Carolina: Uncle couldn’t afford to take care of his late sister’s two children, and unable to bring himself to separate them; left them at a home he knew would be able to keep them together and take care of them well. Delaware: Father left when Delaware was five to marry his mistress; mother, in her outrage, blamed Delaware for annoying him to the point where he wanted to leave. Continued to for years until she realized she was in the wrong. Instead of fessing up and making amends; she abandoned him, feeling as if she was irredeemable (mostly out of laziness tbh). New Jersey & New York: Grandparents frankly thought their grandkids were complete menaces to society and gave up on them deciding they didn’t want to be bothered. Pennsylvania: Was a (very) young apprentice of a blacksmith, but because of disagreements and quarrels with his mentor’s sons, they let him go. He couldn’t find another apprenticeship due to them either being full or not trusting him due to his old mentor bad-mouthing him. Realizing he doesn’t want to live on the streets, he looked for a new home and ran into America. Georgia: Parents both fell incredibly ill, and in their fear that their daughter might catch it, they sent her away. They intended it to be temporary, and that they’d pick her up when feeling better, but they both passed within a year.

How hard is it to run the place?

“The older ones always assist me with the younger kids, so it’s not as difficult as it seems,” The exhausted United States ensured, “WDC is a huge help, too. It’s still a good chunk of work, but I’m happy to do it. My main issue is juggling all of this with my… other responsibilities. A little difficult, but far from impossible. They’re good kids.”

How is it that people end up at the orphanage? Are they dropped off? Do you find them? or do they just appear?

“All of the above. Each and every one of them have their own unique story, so there isn’t a specific way they arrived.” United States exemplified, “It depends on their circumstances.”

Humans can get rabies. And honestly i would adopt all of you but 1) child, 2) broke

“That’s okay! We can still be friends!” Marshall decided before whispering as well as a child not even 5’ tall yet could, “Just put in the good word for me if you hear about any families looking into adoption, okie?”

I would adopt them, but im not an adult yet.

Also i dont care that they bite.

“Really? I’m pretty sure some of them have rabies… Can humans get rabies?” Marshall thought to himself, “Or is it just an animal thing? Either way, most grown ups call them bad kids… Well, they call a lot of us—”

Once again, Puerto Rico motioned for him to stop.

“Er… You humans age a lot faster than us, so… Maybe you can still adopt them by the time you’re an adult!” Marshall changed the subject with optimism.

I’m hugging all of the kids and stealing all of New England.

“Are you sure?” Little Marshall Islands asked, “Rhode Island bites. And so does New Hampshire. And Connecticut. And Vermo—”

Puerto Rico hastily motioned for him to stop.

“…Never mind, I don’t know what I’m talking about! You should totally not rethink adopting! They’re really… Uh… Cuddly? And in need of a good home!”

Hello!

How many of the orphans had parents that didn’t want them?

“Unfortunately, a lot of them were—”

“Like Alaska!” Florida chimed in as a poor attempt to be helpful, “And Louisiana! And… And me…!”

Why do people spread negative rumors about your orphanage?

“Because they’re pricks who have nothing better to do than spread rumors about a bunch of poor kids,” United States scoffed.
