Buckets of fun was had by all on Wednesday night as designers, models, performers and celebrities took to the runway in Vicar St. For the DIT Fashion Show. Titled 'The End of the World... Dawn of a New Era', the fashion show featured any high street, vintage and boutique looks, some outstanding dance routines and a chilling musical performance. The Voice of Ireland's Jessica Pritzel opened the show and set the tone for what was to come with a spine-tingling performance of Evanessence's Bring Me To Life. That girl is SERIOUSLY talented. Like the song, Act 1 was dark and edgy featuring looks from Public Beware, Forever 21, Harlequin and 9 Crow Street, to name but a few. Urban Outfitters Midi-dress with large crucifix logo stood out as a simple yet statement look. I'm also loving the sheer, black maxi-skirts from, well, everywhere! These can be dressed up with killer heels and tonnes of Jewellery or worn casual with a pair of beaten up biker boots and a leather jacket. As for the boys, there were some great Saved By The Bell T-shirts and a Fab pair of plaid turn ups from Harlequinthat stood out among the casual basics. Set design, hair, make up and playlist all made the transition into Act 2 seamlessly. 'Dawn of a New Era was opened with some killer dance moves from Dance Soc and quickly followed by MC for the night, Brendan Courtney. Brendan introduced himself, his shorts, and then most importantly, the finalists in the Young Designer of the Year Competition. It truly is the dawn of a new era for Irish Fashion and the talent of these final nine designers was case and point. The judges for the night surely had a difficult task ahead of them. The models also had a difficult task ahead of them by beginning their second act with the underwear and lingerie section. Yes, much to all the ladies delight (and Brendan!), the first four models to take to the runway wore nothing but boxers by Aussie Burn, Calvin Klien and American Apparel. The girls that followed were decked out in lingerie from adult boutique, Miss Fantasia. Already the audience could tell this half was going to be a lot more light hearted and fun than the dark, eeriness of act 1. Florals, patterns and pastels a plenty were seen for the ladies, from Oasis, Miss Sekfridge and Marks and Spencer. The boys on the other hand donned preppier sportier looks and one stunning three piece grey suit from Reiss. This really popped among the rest of the black tuxedos in the formal wear section. Standing out for the girls was a jaw-dropping leather, backless crop top and peplum maxi-skirt from Atilier 27. Gorgeous. The show finished with the moment everyone was waiting for: the announcement of the winner of the Young Designers competition, judged by Brendan Courtney, Angela Scanlon, Fusco and Bairbre Power. Second runner up went to Tanya Byrne, a stunning, khaki green wool mix coat, with leather sleeves and a military vibe. The look was finished off with a beautiful feathered headpiece. First runner up went to Conor Power (the only boy in the competition!), with a beautiful full length, black gown with sheer panelling. The lucky girl who took away the trophy was Aisling Connell. Her piece shown, features in her collection nicknamed "the jellyfish collection". It was a beautiful Bodysuit with patchworks of deep blue snakeskin leather, sheer pannelling and black piping. Over the bodysuit, the model wore a large, dome shaped cape, with hundreds of chains hanging from invisible threads at the hem line. The movement in the piece is exquisite and along with the tenticle-like chains, its obvious where the nickname comes from. Although I couldn't pick a faourite, Aisling was a well deserved winner with a breathtaking piece.Aisling took away the trophy, €2000 to create her next collection and the chance for her winning piece to appear in a Vodafone advertisement. The future of Irish fashion is in safe hands.
