The meaning behind the Algerian song "Ya Rayah"....
It’s a song that tells the story of an exiled traveler, a gypsy of sorts, traveling aimlessly with no purpose or goal. It tells of his longing to come back to his home, but also tells of his inability to do so. He continues traveling, an emigrant to all other countries, until finally, his heart returns to it’s great high creator.
Rachid Taha made the song his own by releasing a video to go with the song. It follows a similar theme, however dealing with wayward lovers rather than a traveling gypsy. The video begins with a young boy walking down a street in Algiers at night when he hears music and laughter coming from a large tent. He wanders over and walks through the entrance. Immediately greeted by a belly-dancer, she leads him into a party following a wedding. He’s immediately taken in by an older gentleman who begins showing him around and explaining the ways of the world to him. Meanwhile, Rachid Taha sings the song while continuously eyeing the bride, while the bride does the same. She does not love her newlywed groom, however she no longer has a choice in the matter, thus her love for Rachid, and his for her, is strictly forbidden, leading in a similar fashion to a life without purpose as depicted in the original song.
That’s why I love Rachid’s music. It’s so very symbolic, powerful, and emotional.
