Borrowing books from National Library and loading into Kobo eReader
There are many things to like about the Kobo Touch eReader. The Kobo store at kobo.com accepts credit cards from all over the world, even offering the option to pay for books through the ever-useful Paypal. The device also accepts the epub format, which in the ebooks universe, is relatively more open than Amazon Kindle’s proprietary AZW format.
Kobo’s ability to read epub means that an owner can borrow books right from the National Library. Here is how I accomplished it in 11 steps:
Download and install Adobe Digital Editions (ADE) from http://www.adobe.com/products/digital-editions.html.
After installation, the software will force you to accept a license and register an account with Adobe. Just follow the on-screen instructions. If you have set everything up nicely, you probably do not have to fiddle with ADE's settings again.
Connect the Kobo Touch eReader to your desktop by the standard USB cable. The Kobo device will prompt you to select either Connect or Charge. Choose Connect.
ADE will automatically detect the device. Just follow the on-screen instructions to authorise it. The Kobo Touch eReader will appear as an item in ADE’s Library, as outlined by a red box in the picture below.
Next, visit the National Library’s eResources page at: http://eresources.nlb.gov.sg/browse.aspx?browse_by=Type. Click on the Login button, as outlined by the red box in the picture below:
Login with NRIC number, the first word of your full name, and your date of birth:
You will return to the National Library’s eResources homepage, but this time, you are logged in as a borrower. The homepage provides a list of eResources. Scroll down until you see Overdrive: digital media collection.
After arriving at Overdrive’s extensive library of e-resources, you can begin to browse for books that you would like to borrow. Click on the book that you like, and search for an option called Adobe EPUB eBook, as outline by the red box in the picture below:
Click on the link Add to Cart. Once you are done, visit My Cart, and checkout. The eBook will be downloaded into your desktop.
Open Adobe Digital Editions, locate where you saved the eBook, and drag the eBook into the main window of the software. This will authorise the eBook, and the image of its cover will appear in the right window.
To upload it into the Kobo device, simply drag the authorised eBook from the right window into the Kobo eReader’s icon on the left. This is the final step.
Remember, eBooks borrowed from the National Library functions just like any physically borrowed book. It will have to be returned to the Library after a period of time. Fortunately, this process is automatic. The eBook will simply expire on the Kobo eReader.
