As the uncanny semisentient intelligence of the protomolecule tried to make contact with other nodes in the gate builders’ long-dead empire, it woke up mechanisms that had been dormant for millions—or even billions—of years. The end result had been an ancient factory returning to life, a massive robot attack, the melting of one artificial moon, and the detonation of a power plant that nearly cracked the planet in two. All in all, a really shitty experience.

There’s something delicious about certain fans stanning amos for all the reasons the authors decided to have him pick Holden to follow.

I’ve had this in my drafts forever cause I kept meaning to like add something because we all know I love discussing Amos stans but I kept forgetting so here goes:

It’s sort of fascinating to me that Amos manages to be so misunderstood/misaligned, because at this point the show has practically beaten us over the head (I mean this positively) with Amos’ trauma and the fact that he chooses people to associate himself with, i.e. Holden, Naomi, Anna, Clarissa. People still label him as a sociopath, or as some sort of Alpha Male dude. And I unfortunately think this is why a certain subset of people are attracted to Amos as a character, because they see him as some alpha dude.

One of the most insightful things from the Ty and That Guy podcast thus far was Wes and Ty talking about Wes’ audition. Ty brought up something important: Amos never, ever threatens everyone (they said Elias Toufexis who played Kenzo also auditioned for Amos and was the only other actor aside from Wes who got that essential Amos quirk). He says the facts that are in front of him (i.e., I can hold my breath and beat you up for two minutes and I know you cannot so let’s not do this). Amos may be intimidating, but he doesn’t try to intimidate, unless he’s “coming off the rails” as they describe it in book 7. I’m thinking back to the shower scene in 5x01 when a large group of people were annoyed that we didn’t get to see Amos beat the shit out of the people on the transport, which completely missed the point of the scene.

But Amos is acutely aware that his understanding of the facts, and they way he acts on them, are not always acceptable in polite society. At the end of the day, he’s very self-aware. He was raised into a life of trauma. He didn’t have role models, aside from maybe Lydia (WITH A HECKUVA LOT OF ASTERISKS), to help him make good and healthy decisions. Holden always tries to make good decisions, even if they end up backfiring. He tries to help as many people as he can. Same with Naomi, and Anna, and Clarissa. Hence, Amos follows them. He tries to emulate them. That’s my favorite thing about Amos’ chapters in Nemesis Games–you get to see for the first time that he genuinely walks around wondering “what would Naomi/Holden do” all day. It’s really sweet and genuine and it just shows you the incredible impact that people like Naomi and Holden have had on him. I think that same subset of fans who like Macho Man Amos tend to see Naomi and Holden as his handlers, holding a leash, rather than his closest friends. Amos chooses to root himself in people like Holden, Naomi, Anna, Prax, and Clarissa. 

At the end of the day, Amos hates a bully, and I think it’s ironic that a lot of the people who celebrate Amos for punching people and nothing else may be bullies themselves.

The only thing I want from s6 is Amos to be Openly Into Men for once can this show give us that pls

Not sure that’s in the cards for him but I’d honestly love that. And this goes beyond his interest in men because it’s a lot more complex than that. The authors love to pat themselves on the back for talking about his ‘complex’ sexuality on twitter but completely neglect to show it on screen. Maybe that will change now that they’ve got the poly fam onboard and it seems like they’re doubling down with just one more season to go. Whether it’s showing interest in men, or giving us a taste of the ‘complex’ sexuality, I’d love to dive deeper into that and get more insight on his character because of it.
