Happy Pride Moth folks! I'm not sure how many queer moths there are but I certainly have a lot of queer OCs.
Zaddachi's Emperor Moth
Day Nineteen of Moth May
'Bunaeopsis zaddachi'
Don't really have any facts for you today because the Wiki for this moth is no joke a paragraph long so...
I think we should. use our mutuals inboxes like gacha games and roll to get rare OC pulls . and skins. I'm like "oh shittt the Easter Event is coming up, I need to pull for the new skins" so I go into someone's inbox and send them. I dunno. a picture of a quarter. and they respond with a drawing of a random OC of theirs in a bunny onesie
Domestic Silkmoth
Day Eighteen of Moth May
'Bombyx mori'
Apology Fact these moths have been bred in captivity for 5,000 years and they have lost the ability to fly.
@alllllygau & @aurelia-aurita-marine
Cherry Scallop Shell Moth
Day Seventeen of Moth May
'Rheumaptera prunivorata'
Apology Fact Cherry Scallop Shell Moth were first described by Alexander Douglas Campbell Ferguson in 1955.
@aurelia-aurita-marine can you pause your Ryan Gosling simping to draw an insect for Moth May.
Automeris frankae
Day Sixteen of Moth May
(no common name)
Apology Fact is that the Automeris frankae is a type of Eyed Silkmoth that was only recently described and they only have one flight a year.
Sallow Kitten Moth
Day Fifteen of Moth May
'Furcula furcula'
Apology Fact the Sallow Kitten Moth isn't very poisonous but it is commonly mistaken for the Puss Moth which is incredibly toxic.
Narrow-Borded Bee Hawkmoth
Day Fourteen of Moth May
'Hemarius tityus'
Apology Fact: The Narrow-Borded Bee Hawkmoth is known as a type of clearwing which as you might have guessed has clear wings. Much like the Lunar Hornet Moth I posted earlier and much like that one it also pretends to "bee" a different animal. (Pun incredibly intended)
Also Hawkmoths are wild in general. The Hummingbird Hawkmoth looks like a Hummingbird until you see it from the side (then it looks like a shrimp) and the Madagascan Hawkmoth has an incredibly long tongue to get nectar from the Star of Babylon plant.
Antler Moth
Day Thirteen of Moth May
'Cerapteryx graminis'
The Apology Fact is that the Antler Moth has a large case of sexual dimorphism, emphasis on large as the females have a wingspan of 35 to 39 mm and males wingspans are very noticeably smaller only reaching 27 to 32 mm.
Purple Border Gold Moth
Day Twelve of Moth May
'Idaea muricata'
Late Apology Fact: The Purple Bordered Gold Moth is that way to blend in with a flower called the March Cinquefoil. Which looks like this:
Which is way better picture quality than my drawing.
A Full Page of Moth May!
Each of these moths can be found in my posts. Also I want to put it on my wall but the white space feels too empty any suggestions of what to put into them would be greatly appreciated. The only idea I have thus far is to put plants between the moths that they eat as caterpillars.
@alllllygau & @aurelia-aurita-marine I'm still going to bother you for your insects.
Swallow-tailed Moth
Day Eleven of Moth May
'Ourapteryx sambucaria'
Apology Fact: Their wings are a pale yellow colour that actually fades to white the older the moth is. (The adults have a lifespan of 1 to 4 weeks)
Lunar Hornet Moth
Day Ten of Moth May
'Sesia bembeciformis'
The Apology Fact: The Lunar Hornet Moth uses something called 'Batesian mimicry' (and it's not the only one I have planned) to mimic (who could've guessed) a dangerous or unpalatable species (like a Hornet) to avoid predators.
Larch Lappet Moth
Day Nine of Moth May
'Tolype laricis'
Lateness Apology Moth Fun Fact: The genus this moth 'Tolype' comes from the ancient Greek 'tolypē' which means "lump of yarn" or "ball of wool".
Enjoy the entomology based etymology.
Mustard Ghost Moth
Day Eight of Moth May
'Abantiacles hyalinatus'
I've decided since all of these were delayed you get a little fun fact about the moth if I can find one.
Also 5/10 for accurate name. Not a ghost but it is mustard.
There are some Mustard Ghost Moths that are less mustard coloured and more red and only males have those silver streaks on their forewings.
Peach Blossom Moth
Day Seven (just pretend with me) of Moth May
'Thyatira batis'
