i’m just really proud of our tiny show from sweden that is so unapologetically queer and lead by edvin and omar as well as they rest of the cast and crew so gracefully because the work they’re doing is so fucking important. this show is so fucking important. it’s important for non-english language productions. it’s important to see a non-white lead (who gets to speak multiple languages on the show!!!) in such a huge role. it’s important for unlabelled queer kids to see a character like wille centralised without grappling with a label for himself.
how often are we going to have a show that is such a phenomenal comment on the class system, on traditions and impact the monarchy has on every day society done is such a standout way? the direction, the writing, the acting, the music – passion bleeds out in every single pore of this show and i could talk about it forever. it’s truly a revolutionary masterpiece and if there’s anything of value we can gain from the boys being on jimmy fallon, it’s that someone somewhere who needs it, finds it. that’s all.
THIS IS HAPPENING GUYS!!😭😭💜💜
The reason YR has such interesting characters is that they are all well-written individually regardless of plot points. You could take wilmon away, and Wille and Simon would both still be well-developed, three dimensional characters. Same with Sara, August, and Felice. We still feel like we know THEM outside of the storylines they are a part of. Even the more minor characters we have gotten to know better. The characters feel like real people outside of the actual story and that just adds to the plot strength.

Empathy As A Superpower
I was thinking about Wilhelm and one of his character traits which was used brilliantly as sort of a Chekhov's gun throughout the story: Empathy.
Wilhelm has always been an empathetic person. Sure, he often gets blindsided by his own assumptions and emotions but it's so human and also kind of understandable, given the environment he was brought up in. Right off from S1, we see many instances of Wilhelm being kind to the people around him. He tries to help Simon with rowing and tutoring stuff, he feels bad for exposing August's money problems and goes out of his way to get it resolved. He apologizes to August in his weakest moment, when his hurt from the video is still pretty raw. He tries his best to offer grace and humility to the people around him, and it's very cleverly explored as a character detail in S1.
In S2, although he is driven by anger and vengeance towards August, he does not lose sight of his empathy for other people. He sits back and listens to how the traditions are affecting other people. He hears Walter and Simon in Ep 1 talking about how they are hungry but they can't eat first because of a stifling tradition and takes action. He sees how the first years are treated around and tries to bring everyone to equal footing. It really reminded me of the stories I used to read as a kid where a king would often survey his kingdom disguised as a commoner and would bring justice to the aggrieved (which sort of works in his case because although him being the crown prince is common knowledge, he still does everything as a student). He befriends Alexander, and although his friendship is driven by guilt but he also offered warm comrade ship to him because deep in his heart, he knew that Alexander did not deserve what he and August did to him. He greets Marcus with sincerity at the ball because he thinks it's the best he can do for Simon in that moment.
And the speech at the end of S2 is where the Chekhov's gun is fired: Wilhelm is speaking the words supplied to him by the Royal Court about "uphelding traditions" and "passing those traditions to the future generations" and how hollow it all feels. How he is always told to keep facades for his own good and how he just can't keep up with them anymore, not after seeing how they stifle him, and everyone around him. How his empathy saved him from getting blindsided by his pain and pushed him to make things better for himself, for others.
I don't know if I'm in the minority here but what I loved about season 2 is actually Simon's storyline! I get wanting to dive deeper into his family life and that better be the plan for season 3 if they get one, but all the things we did get I thought were brilliant. I loved loved Simon in season 1 but he at times he came across a little perfect with his incredibly strong morals and such a clear understanding of who he is. I mean yes he was selling booze and drugs to help him and Sara make it through Hillerska but that felt pretty justified.
I don't know how anyone can say that Simon was just reduced to a love interest this season when those romances worked so well to bring to light the way Simon struggles. We learned that he runs away from difficult feelings instead of really dealing with them, he can be talked into things he knows are not right (we can say whatever we want about Marcus and his manipulation but Simon should have never even went on a second date with him) and we learned that to an unnerving level he doesn't let himself break down (that gun scene and the way Simon held all of his anger in - chef's kiss acting from Omar).
And clearly there's something about Wille that just makes him feel all the possible emotions and he's so drawn into that and maybe a part of it is the fact that he gets a little bit off on the drama (hello the whole swinging a ball at Wille's face and then proceeding to make him jealous at the locker room and at the ball despite the fact that he knew perfectly well that Wille is already so fucking jealous). Now that I think about it, and don't hate me for it, I suspect Marcus all in all is a little too boring for him. A kid he went to pre-school with who knows all of his personal shit because their mothers are friends? That's not the life Simon wants, he doesn't want to stay in Bjärstad, he's told us this in so many ways. He wants to be a singer probably. Listen, he kissed an obviously closeted Prince of Sweden after spending the equivalent of one day with him, he is looking for drama just a little bit. Simon is good and honest and he loves the people around him so much but he's also a little messy and a little petty and he doesn't always make the right choices and all of that just makes me love him a thousand times more.
Sorry for the insanely long message I just have a lot of thoughts that I'm desperate to share 😂 Love your blog and the incredibly thoughtful conversations you are having here 💞
I love this I love this I love this I want to have this framed. This is exactly how I’ve come to view Simon’s storyline in season 2 after sitting with it for a while.
At first I was a little bummed that we didn’t get more of Simon’s family life, but if you think about the way Simon’s storyline ended in s1, it leads perfectly into his storyline in season 2. His season 2 arc begins when Sara tells him he lets everyone piss on him and when he tells Wille that he has to deal with things on his own. Simon took what Sara said to heart and said it was time to start prioritizing himself. He had no reason to stay in contact with Micke and the main thing he’s dealing with in season is his heartbreak over Wille and the video situation. What we see is a Simon who is desperate to move on and forget everything that happened the previous semester and the way he deals with that is by running away. He does it in season 1 too (for example when he runs away from his and Wille’s argument in the music room).
I understand why people say he was reduced to a love interest, but to me, the centre of this story is the love story, so of course Wille and Simon’s character arcs are going to heavily deal with that. Wille’s storyline was heavily about his feelings for Simon as well - Simon is all he wants after all. The focus of the season was them trying to live without each other and it not working.
I also agree that Marcus is too boring for Simon. It’s set up in season 1 that Simon wants more out of his life as you said and he’s very clearly drawn to Wille - Rosh even calls him out on it in season 2. He is scared of getting hurt but can’t help but be drawn in. He keeps Wille at a distance but then pulls him back in when he feels him drifting away. As you said, he’s a little messy and petty and he experienced so many emotions this season and I thought it was brilliantly done.
Simon has a fire inside of him just as much as Wille does and that’s why they’re so drawn to each other - they bring that fire out in each other.
I also loved that we got to see more of Simon’s love for singing. I thought that part of his character was underwritten in season 1 and I’m so happy they expanded on it.
I wish I had more to add but you explained it so perfectly. Feel free to slide into my DMs with your thoughts anytime; this was a pleasure to read!
Yes!! All of this!!
Also what I love with Simon's arc is that the writers were not afraid to let Simon make mistakes- his mistakes do not affect the moral righteousness of his character. Which is such an interesting thing to do because often people are really afraid to experiment with the morally righteous characters but whatever bad decisions Simon takes are just so human, he's just a 16 year old kid, damnit. We have all been there. As the anon beautifully pointed out, we got to know Simon's flaws as well this season, which makes the "balance" that Wilhelm and Simon achieved at the end of the season much more palatable- they both made mistakes and none of them are perfect people, but they are not supposed to be perfect anyways. They are just supposed to love each other, and that's all what matters.

Wilmon and hands season 2
I love how they kept the focus on Wilmon and hands in season 2.
Even if they had a lot less really intimate scenes and much more focus on their separate development, them touching and holding hands remained a focal point in season 2.
Even in Wille's dream it's a prominent and important aspect of the intimacy they share. To touch and be touched is so important for Wille.
And it's one of the last thing he dreams of before waking up - holding Simon's hand tenderly.
Then their hands touch by accident (or was it an accident) and you can basically feel the charge that runs through them.
How many memories run through their heads before Simon pulls away. Because Simon is hurting and he's realising just how hard it is to be near Wille. How much it will hurt and how much he can't ignore the pain.
So he pulls away because he's protecting himself and his heart. And then after this he asks Wille for space.
And I think this moment is so much more powerful because of the distance between them through season 2.
Even though Simon has pushed him away before, Wille is still reaching out.
There's a bit of hesitation but at the same time he feels assertive. As if he knows that there's hope for them now.
But he's slow and careful so that Simon has the chance to pull away if he oversteps his boundaries . It's still on Simon's terms but even if it is Wille is still managing to show Simon what he wants.
And this time Simon is not pulling away at all.
It's such a beautiful moment where they are both trying to figure out what will happen to then. They are bringing comfort to each other again. They are trying to be on the same page even if it's difficult because Simon needs to go to the police to bring himself justice and for Wille that has huge consequences.
He'll have to give up on the freedom he's just realised he will be able to have.
It should feel hopeless, it should drive them apart even more.
But it doesn't at all. Because they are being honest and communicating with eachother and most of all. They understand eachother and listen to eachother.
It feels like they feel hope for the first time in months. Both of them.
And then we have their final moment together. Such a beautiful scene.
They hold eachothers hand, they comfort eachother, they are on the same page and Simon most definitely helps Wille be brave. Even if they are litterally ten meters away from everyone else in a wide open corridor they are not afraid to be affectionate and show their love.
It's such a beautiful and tender moment for them.
The more I think and a analyse this season the more I fall in love with it!
Lots to love about that speech scene but the progression of Krissy's facial expression is up there for me

You ever been to a Baskin-Robbins? Can’t say that I have. They’re like… You know the ones. They’re like half a Dunkin’ Donuts, and they’re open all night, and it’s 3:00 a.m., and nobody’s switching out those giant empty barrels of fudge ripple. That’s me.
I don’t think enough people have been talking about how the umbrella academy in the new universe are like cult classic criminals??? The Kennedy Six???? I would have KILLED for Diego to walk into like a supermarket and some history buff just go oh my god that’s the guy who shot Kennedy????
