Happy 83th Birthday to Nobel prize-winning author, Toni Morrison!
In celebration, stop by one of our NYPL branches to grab any of Morrison’s books, which include Beloved, The Bluest Eye, and Song of Solomon.
Also, watch this LIVE from NYPL video, where Morrison discusses races and writing with author, Junot Diaz.

WHY DID THE LIBRARIAN CROSS THE ROAD?
To avoid answering anonymous questions.
On September 19, 1796, the nation’s first President bid farewell to his “friends and fellow citizens.” The New York Public Library has his final draft of his remarks before they were printed and shared with the American public. You can read the address in a flip book on the Library’s Digital Collections site - it’s a good day to be inspired by the United States’ founding father.
As we approach William Shakespeare’s 450th birthday, our fascination with his life and work shows no sign of fading. Each year brings new biographies, revised editions of the plays and poems, and books promising to make his creations easier for readers encountering them for the first time. It’s not an exaggeration to say that there are enough books about Shakespeare to fill an entire library. Readers and librarians alike are justified in feeling overwhelmed.
Brush up your Shakespeare! Start quoting him now.
The things I want to know are in books; my best friend is the man who’ll get me a book I ain’t read.

What does your personal book collection look like? Do you organize your books in any particular way?
I’m a librarian’s daughter. I know the Dewey Decimal System, and I am familiar with the Library of Congress classification system because it’s used by Baltimore’s public library, the Enoch Pratt. My fiction is alphabetized by author, divided between adult and children’s literature, hardcover and paperback. I let my husband organize the nonfiction. It breaks my heart, but I let him.
