Oh Jah Jah - Eddie Murphy
Ok, I'm about to rant through my thought processes as I tried to figure out exactly how I feel about this situation.
So I recently came across this track only after reading this article discussing the more recent push for solidifying reggae's Jamaican roots within mainstream environments. (It is really well written so I would recommend you read it as well) But I feel like having it as a foreground kind of made my initial listen to this track somewhat biased but after revisiting it today, along with taking in his earlier track with Snoop Lion Red Light I think I've made up my mind...
It nuh mek it.
Now, to be fair I really wanted to like this endeavour. I mean technically speaking, Eddie has incorporated all the right elements to making a big chune (meaning the typical references to "jah," "babylon," and "actual real life experiences of minoritized communities," etc. etc.) BUT, for some reason even with that I still wasn't feeling it.
I was struggling with ideas of cultural appropriation and trying to wrap my head around why this is/isn't ok. Certainly him being of African descent lends to his legitimacy to a certain extent but still, I was never entirely sold on this project.
What tipped me off was the little things that I found to be problematic such as the random words/expressions he'd project at the beginning of the songs like "boogle" or "woyoy"
Not to say that they haven't been/are being used by other artists but... *le sigh*
At the end of the day, reggae music (and really, music period) should never be formulaic as such.
I don't deny that he has talent but please, save room for the other yutes like CHRONIXX who're actually doing it and have the potential to make a difference.
But what do I know?

Million - Allen Stone
Hello Hello,
It's been a minute since I've done an actual post.
I'll make this one quick.
Allen stone is back at it again. with pure vibes as usual.
take this in. i'm sure you'll be hearing a lot more from this guy soon (mainstream wise) since he's apparently signed now.
Can't wait for him to perform in toronto one day.
G'day, xo
@Kendricklamar WAS robbed, BUT he was not the only one who was robbed. Personally, I was pleased he was able to perform and they KILLED! IT! One of the FEW moving moments of the night for ME.
Though it’s called “Music industries biggest night” the #Grammys are NOT about the music, it’s a...
Things are changin - Gary Clark Jr. (Cover) Hello hello Here's a relatively recent full cover of the clip I posted on IG. From GCJ's Black & Blu album which is amazing by the way. I actually just got to see him live last week and it ties (with d'angelo) as the BEST concert I've ever been to thus far. I always knew dude could throw down on he guitar, but getting to see his skills live was a great experience. Only thing is that I wish he's connect with the audience more, verbally, cuz dude legit said "hi, thanks for coming, this was fun." And that's it. Lol I dunno I guess to me, I think a concert is more well rounded when they actually talk you know? It makes them seem like an actual person rather than simply an amazing musical machine. Not that it's necessarily a bad thing. But yah... Anyways, peep the vid. Lemme know what you think. Ps I feel less anxious about this one, which is strange but good. I guess things really are changing? :p Pss mod I can't wait to jam with ya ;) Later dayz, xo.
