He gives a flat look in turn. “I’m really not. As I said, give it another thousand years and you might understand.” Ahh, to be young again!
“And please, why do you think I said ‘everyone’? It isn’t about looking back at all. Society as is could never meet the needs of every single person to allow an equal distribution of opportunity–not without slipping into totalitarianism, anyway. A hypothetical soft reset is impossible, but for the sake of argument it’s far more pleasant to discuss than a global cataclysm. What I’m getting at is the only ways you can dismantle a system and rebuild are the passage of time and decay, ending in abandonment, civil war or revolution, external forces like natural disasters, an invasion by an outside entity, or all of the above.” He breathes a long sigh.
“I’m not saying it isn’t worth trying. Only that humanity has been running variations on the same bloody theme for a long, long time. Either that cycle needs to be forcibly broken, because some people won’t let go of power willingly, or we need to find a new way of doing things as a species naturally and that will take far, far longer. Whatever our governments and all others are attempting at present just isn’t it.”
☆彡 “Bravo, Bravo, what a speech. You really like to monologue, y’know that?” She claps slowly, deliberately with a dry smile upon her face.
“All of this talk of reseting and cycles. What a tired sermon from the man who first spun so many of these cycles to begin with.” She can’t help but laugh, though it is devoid of glee, and rather filled to the brim with hautiness and a touch of contempt. Folding her arms across her chest, she releases a sigh, then shakes her head.
“Maybe you’re right Arthur, maybe I’ll understand you with age. This is far beyond me, but... I can agree, to some extent, some things need to be changed. But really... I can’t say I see a need for a total overhaul. What I seek can exist now, with everything in tact, with a little hard work.”
