Amycus scrambled around his room trying to get ready for the ball. Still heartbroken, he’d considered skipping it all and spending his night in the library, but Alecto had threatened to stun him should he miss the big event that happened to fall on the night of their seventeenth birthday. He liked the suit he’d bought earlier that week, but for the life of him couldn’t find a way to make the mask look presentable. His hair was slicked back, barely curling, and he’d sprayed a few spurts of his favourite cologne, something he saved for special occasions, but still he didn’t feel right. Shrugging at his reflection, he made his way out of the dormitory and down to the great hall, wondering how hard it would be to avoid Lucy, when he saw her. She looked magnificent. Beautiful in a way he couldn’t put words to and it took everything he had not to rush over and pull her in his arms. But she didn’t want that, he had to remind himself. So instead he did all he could to dodge her, finding a safe spot beside the punch and sighing. This was not how he’d wanted the night to start.
Lucinda gave up. It was stupid in the first place. What was she even thinking? That she could tell him she couldn’t be brave enough to tell people about them and still want him? She shook her head at her own idiocity and walked towards the exit. Her mood dampened, she walked her head low until she catched a certain blonde with another girl, seemingly content. She stopped in her tracks, a scowl making its way to her face. No, she wouldn’t go. She’d find Amy. She’d find him, they’d find a secluded place, dance and she’d give him his present. She had to. She needed some normal in her life. Something comforting - like Amy’s arms around her.
It was the second time around when she almost called it quits that found him. She had been walking all over the room for a while that she started to feel thirsty and made her way to the punch this time, her eyes still frantically searching for him. She grew tired, her feet already aching. She sighed, pouring herself a glass of punch before she noticed him. He was right there. Without much thinking, she put down her untouched punch and walked straight to him, throwing her arms around neck in an attempt of hugging him. She needed to kiss him but that was out of option so she had to settle for a hug, her excuse being wishing him a happy birthday if anyone dared to ask. “I’ve been looking for you everywhere! I walked the whole room three times!”
He stood there awkwardly, not sure whether he should swallow his pride and approach her, or continue hiding in the shadows, waiting for something to happen. Amycus watched her when she stopped at the punch, knowing he couldn’t hide forever. It was a mixture of embarrassment and affection that clouded his mind. On one hand he wanted to take her in his arms and spend the rest of their night forgetting about the world, but on the other he was still reeling over her mild rejection. Finally, taking a deep breath, he took a step towards her. Barely having time to prepare himself, he jumped a little when she threw her arms around him, pleasantly surprised by this gesture, and hugged her back. “I’ve been here,” he chuckled, sparing her the details. “Just watching the party.” Letting go of her body, as painful as it was, he took a step back to admire her. Hand to his mouth he admired the way the green gown clung to her and shook his head, speechless and grinning. “Christ Lucy,” he whispered. “You look... unbelievable.”
