So many years ago, this was home. My grandparents house was on the Umpqua River and their backyard full of huge trees with the river just through the trees. My grandpa would just walk a few steps to fish for steelhead. (creating an early appreciation for fresh caught fish). Years later, as a teen, my cousins and I crossed it to explore a creepy abandoned house. So many memories. Yesterday, we ate lunch outside at the Steamboat Inn just another 20 minute drive up the river from my grandparents old house. And stopped here to see this family enjoy the river. Time feels like it has stopped here on the Umpqua. -~- . . Whats “Umpqua” mean? “Thundering waters” or “across the waters” are two popular translations for this surviving word of the Umpqua language. -~-
