Sidra - Part 1: A Discussion
Sidra had worn her grandmother's wedding dress for the ceremony. Her mother had worn it, too. It was light as spider's silk and threaded intricately with small pearlescent beads on the bodice. It didn't fit her at first. In fact, it took several days of careful sewing to tailor it to her. She was more endowed than her mother had been. Although she had taken great care to make sure her dress was perfect, she knew Torin wouldn't notice such things.
Their partnership would be just that. A partnership. Nevermind that she had fallen in love with him. In just a few short weeks, she had grown to respect him. That respect blossomed into a shy, gentle love. She felt like a child again. Even though she knew Torin would likely never return those feelings, she was content to have him as a husband and joyful to have Maisie as a daughter.
Maisie was just under a year old. Sidra was smitten immediately. She had always loved children and babies. Even though Maisie wasn't her flesh and blood, she knew that that she would do anything for her.
Sidra stood across the bed from Torin. Torin offered her a gentle smile from underneath his trim beard. Sidra returned the smile. They hadn't discussed how this night would unfold. Torin's first wife was a beauty and a warrior; Sidra knew she did not measure up to her in either beauty or fighting. She was a healer who had worked their earth alongside the spirits for years. Her skin was tanned and hair was dark. She wasn't the light and graceful woman that Donella had been.
So, she wasn't sure if Torin thought of her in that way. If he'd want her that night. She was nervous either way.
Torin sighed and threw himself onto the bed, releasing the tension that had been building in the air.
"Come sit, Sidra. Let's talk for a while," his voice rumbled.
Sidra sat down on the edge of the bed, examining his blonde hair which had been worn down today. It lay across the bed in wavy tendrils. She wanted to brush her fingers through it, but felt that would be too intimate. Torin's eyes were closed in serenity. Most likely relieved to be away from the crowd of people.
Sidra tried to relax, but shifted uneasily as Torin said, "There's much that I need to discuss with you."
