And So It Begins {Nayru and Azrael}
He was not used to being silenced. It took Azrael a moment to process Nayru’s actions, hiding him from the view of the other people in the room, and her sudden insistent inquisition. Damn it, Azrael, you fool.
Wiping the blood from his nose with the back of his hand, Azrael glanced down at his chest. Goddesses, it hadn’t been enough - an angry welt of a scar still spanned from across his collarbone to the bottom of his ribcage, a scar that he knew would stay angry for as long as it could. He hated scars.
His eyes flicked to Nayru, but she shied from his gaze; no doubt his little demonstration had unnerved her at the very least. “I have answered the ‘who’,” he remarked dryly, trying to pull himself into a sitting position. “As for the ‘what’…” I’ll let you know when I find out.
"They say that when a person of a corrupted heart seeks out the triforce they throw the world into chaos," he mused, glancing down at his fingernails, bruised and bloodied by his own constant worrying at them. "There is suddenly a dire need at hand - not for a hero, but for balance. I suppose you could say that I am that balance."
As he moved to sit upright, she flinched away, unsure how to touch, or help for that matter, him. While not out of depth lore-wise, she had had it pounded into her brain at an early age that things that looked evil were evil, and should be dealt with accordingly. The teachings of the Mothers conflicted with the superstitions of Labrynnans, however, leaving her mildly lost.
She spoke slowly, carefully choosing her words.
"You say balance...but do you mean that? Or do you mean to say that you...you are the villain, so to speak, to someones hero?" She still did not meet his eyes, and busied her hands with cleaning bloodied rags, sinking back in to her traditional work. "I don't mean to say that you are a villain, but...the way you speak, you make it sound as though you believe yourself to be one."
She trailed off, uncertainty clouding her mind. Slowly, finally, she met his gaze, brow still furrowed and mouth turned downward.
"You cannot stay here. I believe you would bring nothing but harm to this village. I cannot allow that." She sighed, and shook her head, "However, you would die in the wilds. My duty demands that I care for and protect those who are placed in my care. And as you were brought to me, you would fall within that realm. This creates a problem. I must protect those within this village from any ill will you may bring in your wake, yet I must also care for you." She suddenly became aware of how harsh she sounded, and quickly attempted to change her tone.
"You will be moved to a more secure location, where I may keep a close watch on you, as well as see to your wounds in a more...agreeable fashion, as my traditional methods do not seem to work on you. I will later decide where to go from there."
She stood, brushed herself off, and held out a hand to help him up.
{WHOOPS}
And So It Begins {Nayru and Azrael}
He sighed deeply, shaking his head. “Fine, fine. I’ll do it without the rum, then.” He screwed his eyes shut, his brow furrowing as he concentrated. After a while healing himself had become easier; Azrael could visualize his body and the injury he sought to mend, and then it was merely a case of manipulating the shadow to stitch the wound together.
Of course, that was when he wasn’t distracted, bleeding, or exhausted. Digging his nails into his fingers, Azrael bit his lip as he concentrated, feeling his focus slip as he healed himself. Almost there, almost… just a tad more…
It was no use; he simply didn’t have the energy. He fell back against the blankets, blood streaming from his nose as Azrael lost the ability to hold his head up. His temples throbbed with the effort, and he realized he had been holding his breath.
“Is it… is it gone?”
Nayrus face took on something of a haughty look at Azrael sighed, but it quickly turned to confusion. What on earth was he doing? Was he trying to stand? Her mouth formed an "o" shape and her eyes grew large as the puzzle fit itself together. Fear clawed at her stomach, and for a moment she was a little girl. The world was large and confusing, and her duties had been laid before her, numberless and strange.
His question brought her back to her senses, and she quickly "shush"'d him, moving to hide him from view. It was a moment before she could speak, clearly shaken, very tense, and mildly confused.
"Who...what are you?" Her voice spat more venom than intended, but she had no care for that right now. Her hands shook as she looked at the wound, or what was left of it. It would leave a deep scar, but it had stopped bleeding, and now seemed more an injury of a few days old, still painful, but no longer a threat. Her eyes met his for a brief second, but she could not hold his gaze. There were too many questions, and now too much danger.
And So It Begins {Nayru and Azrael}
The language she spoke was unfamiliar to him, neither dubhteanga nor Hylian, and it frustrated him that he was unsure of what she was saying. When she attempted to repeat his name, he couldn’t help but chuckle at the way Nayru struggled to wrap her accented tongue around the syllables. “Azrael,” he repeated, “but very close, I must admit. I mean, most completely mispronounce it.”
With some difficulty, Azrael propped himself up on his elbows, wincing at the pain in his chest. “Worry not, dear lady, you don’t need to tend to me,” he insisted, his face screwed up with the exertion of utilizing his weakened body. “I’m capable of healing myself, I just need to… relax, and focus on it. I can do neither at the moment. I don’t suppose you’d have something to distract me? I find rum usually does a bang up job of it.”
Her mouth tightened down into a thin line, and made a show of checking her cloak and her sleeves. "I am sorry, I do not make it a habit of carrying rum on my person." She spat out the word rum as though it were poison. She continued to look at him warily, confused about what he had just said. Healing himself? Did he intend to sew himself shut? He seemed a loner sort, but this was extreme. She felt like the wheels in the back of her mind were slowly clicking into place, as though she were remembering a word, and once she said it, everything would be made clear.
"If you wish, I can sing, or perhaps mend your shirt? Or is there something else you desire?"
And So It Begins {Nayru and Azrael}
The pain faded as the girl was startled, her magic halting. Her sweet voice apologized, introduced herself – Nayru, had he heard her correctly? “What a unique name,” he groaned through gritted teeth, but the sarcasm fell flat and the statement almost sounded genuine.
She moved her hands to tend to him once more, but Azrael’s hand flew out to grasp her wrist tightly – rather, as tightly as he could manage when he lay in this weakened state. “Don’t,” he said, his voice a deadly whisper. “You don’t understand. I am not… I am not like these villagers you aid. Your magic will hurt me.”
He had hoped that perhaps she would be able to discern enough from this not to ask too many questions, but instead she asked many. Azrael narrowed his eyes. “I was sent regarding a job,” he replied smoothly, his eyes fixed on Nayru’s. She had the most startlingly blue eyes; it was almost too unnerving to be beautiful. “The job went sour, and while I managed to get it done I was rather badly wounded, as you may have noticed. If it matters to you, my name is Azrael.”
The ghost a smirk creeping onto his face, Azrael added, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Nayru. Though admittedly I am sorry it is due to such unpleasant circumstances.”
Nayru's face registered insult for a moment, before falling back into the characteristic "Oracle" face she wore most often: mouth at a slight, kind smile, eyes alert. But her mind let it simmer for far longer. He must not have been from these lands, how dare he insult the Oracle, and by extension the Goddess, in such a careless manner?
When he grabbed her wrist, the mask broke again, and this time it revealed anger, and she had a much harder time regaining control. Yanking her arm away from his touch, she folded her hands into her lap, sitting straight and meeting his gaze with equal intensity.
"I am sorry, once more, for practicing the incorrect variety of medicine on you." Her tone was dry and carried an air of disdain. She normally did not let rude patrons crawl under her skin, but he was doing his damnedest to get under there. As he told her his small story, her unease grew. It took everything she had to maintain eye contact, she wanted so badly to look away, to run away. She allowed herself only part of that pleasure, and slowly rose from his side.
"Voi valossa jumalattaret polttaa pimeys sydämestäsi." She spoke the blessing quickly and softly, a formality she did not relish. "I am sorry for your troubles, Ah...Ay...Ahsserayehl," She quietly cursed herself, she had hoped to make her exit smooth and somewhat haughty, but she couldn't even pronounce his name, and had made a fool of herself attempting it. "But it seems as though I cannot help you. I would offer to allow my assistant to see to your wounds, but she uses very similar techniques."
She sighed and picked up the bowl, not at all happy with what she was going to say next. "I am bound to my duties, one of which is to help the sick and wounded. You are one of those, and you have been placed under my care." Another sigh. "What would you have me do?"
And So It Begins {Nayru and Azrael}
Unceremoniously lodged in some corner of the room, Azrael slumped against the furs and blankets that had been arranged prior to him being brought here. His entire body ached; he likely wouldn’t be able to put off healing much longer.
There were small, delicate hands at his chest, and for a brief moment Azrael was frozen with surprise. For whatever reason, he had not assumed the Oracle to have such a gentle touch. His eyes opened slightly, but all he could really make out amidst his blurring vision was the colour blue. A lot of blue, at that.
And then came the singing. The Oracle – a woman, he was sure – had the softest voice with the clearest tone. She could have moved mountains with the notes she carried with her gentle, sweet voice. Azrael would have sold any soul he had to spend the rest of eternity listening to that voice, had it not been the cause of the sudden violent burning sensation across his skin.
He cried out then, his back arching as he clawed at the furs. He prayed his actual claws had not decided to show themselves then, but the pain was blinding enough that he couldn’t be sure. “S-stop!” Azrael roared, struggling to move away from the magic that threatened to destroy him.
Nayru jumped, knocking the bowl of water next to her, the clean liquid splashing out. The man had scared her and unsettled her, and her hands now became unsteady. As she worked to clean up the spill, apologies tumbled out of her mouth, and her cheeks reddened. Had she prodded some nerve? Had he simply awoken from sleep, confused?
"I am sorry, Sir, please, lie back, you..." She trailed off for a moment, taken aback by how primal he looked. What horror had he seen? She quickly regained herself and continued, "You are in the town of Pohjois Maa, you were brought here by some of the hunters in the village. I am the Oracle Nayru, I'm only here to help you."
Gently, she pushed back on his shoulders, trying to get him to calm once more. He had unnerved her, broken her concentration, and her voice shook as she softly sang a soothing song, re-arranging the blanket beneath his head, and resuming tending to his wound, hoping he would remain cooperative. She didn't know what she would do if he didn't, but she hoped it wouldn't come to that.
In an attempt to keep his mind away from any pain or confusion, the Oracle began asking questions, simple ones.
"What brings you this far north?"
"Do you remember what happened?"
"What is your name?"
And So It Begins {Nayru and Azrael}
In his moments of darkness, all that Azrael could be sure of was the pain that emanated from the deep wound across his chest. That, and the indistinct shouting around him as he was dragged from where he had fallen.
In truth, Azrael had not wanted to die today. The morning had been promising, and he was certain he’d finish the day with a bag of rupees in his hands and potentially a bottle of rum. Instead, the assignment he’d been given had turned out to be a set-up. It was impressive that he’d managed to do away with his attackers, but not without being wounded gravely. And to be honest, Azrael was rather ashamed he’d been bested by a band of humans lacking skill or training; he’d left himself to sleep rather than heal immediately as a sort of punishment to his ego.
Naturally, what was currently going on around him had not been a part of his plans. If he opened his eyes just enough to see, Azrael could just make out the indistinct shapes of three people carrying him, two positioned behind him to hoist him up by his arms and another lifting his legs.
They weren’t exactly doing the best job of it; one of the people holding up his arms was quite a bit weaker than their partner, and the difference in strength meant aggravating Azrael’s wounds. Oh dear, he thought to himself, but recognized his mouth moving and saw that he wasn’t quite in a decent enough state to keep his words in his head.
“What did he say?” one of the humans around him asked. Another responded, angrily at that, but in a language Azrael could not decipher. Was it dubhteanga? Best try it just in case, he thought. A sloppily-constructed sentence rolled from his tongue, along with bloodied spittle. Oops.
“Quick, to the Oracle!” another yelled, and there was a growing insistence in the way Azrael’s rescuers hastily dragged him along, jostling him quite badly. Azrael groaned in pain; whoever this Oracle was, he prayed to every deity he knew that they would not have to carry him.
Most of the people in the healing house had minor illnesses or wounds, making the Oracles work much easier. She had been able to send around her assistant with salves and bandages while she tended to those in greater need. The cold had brought with it some sickness that affected the lungs, painful and slow. As she worked she sang, soft, slow melodies that soothed the patient, letting them sleep deeply.
A commotion outside disturbed the patient she was now working with, a young girl. Nayru quickly settled her again, then rose as the door opened and a body was clumsily carried in. He did not look like any of the villagers, and was dressed as someone come from Hyrule would in these lands. What would bring a lone traveler this far north?
She quickly directed the men carrying him to an empty corner of the house, and went around and gathered up supplies. The man was in bad shape, she could see, and already looked close to death. The least she could do is bring him peace in his long sleep.
As she drew closer, and the men left, she could see he had a large gash across his chest that didn't look like any animal she had ever seen. Moving quickly, she pulled open his shirt, better exposing the wound. He had the darkest blood she had ever seen, and his skin looked sickly. Perhaps he had been out in the wilds for too long? She began cleaning at the wound, singing softly as she worked.
And So It Begins {Nayru and Azrael}
The Oracle rarely traveled this far afield. But the winter had been hard in these parts of her world, and they had need of hope and help. As her small entourage rode into the town of Pohjois Maa, a small wind kicked up, making her glad for the fur lined cloak she wore. Pulling the dark blue shroud around her closer, she looked back to her first assistant, who was already carrying their bags. The poor girl looked miserable. Nayru smiled encouragingly to her, and walked towards the main house. A large man came striding up to her, snapping off a quick bow upon meeting her. He clearly had been working in the woods his whole life, his skin was leathery and bore the wear of cold and sun.
"Oraakkeli, we are glad you've come to us. Your journey shall not be in vain,voi tähdet kiitos ja siunausta sinulle!" His eyes glowed with happiness mingled with worry, the look of a leader greeted with a better path for his people. He quickly told Nayru's guard and entourage where they would be staying, and the group left, leaving Lisholf (as she discovered his name was) and the Oracle alone.
"Herra Lisholf, the Mothers of the Sanctuary wish to help as much as they may, and in a few days time, a shipment of cloth and food will be coming. It may not be much, but there is enough to help. The hope to send more as they may." She smiled and gently touched his arm, "But for now you must tell me where I may begin a service, surely that is needed?"
"Kiitos! Kiitos jumalattaret! Oracle, this is more than we could have hoped for." He genuinely looked surprised and seemed for a moment to want to dance, but quickly regained control over himself. "But there are more urgent matter, Oracle. This way!"
He lead her through the small village, a collection of stone and wood houses, thatched roofs and furs, bonfires and smoking pits. The people looked sad and lost, and even the few fires that remained lit were small and fading. Lisholf came to a larger building and quickly opened the door, indicating she must enter quickly. He closed the door behind them, and made sure the fur that covered it was on securely.
Inside was a sorry sight. A few dozen people lay on the floor, in varying states of unwell. A group in one corner looked as though they had been in some sort of an accident in the woods, and other coughed and shuddered, some deep sickness in them.
Nayru pushed back her hood and cloak, and set about her work.

{Ooh, round two, I'm going to continue this thought
So, my idea is that Labrynna is the northern of the two OoS/OoA games, and as such is a bit chillier and maybe a little bleaker at times. As such, the people often make their meals to be filling, to keep (canning/jarring is very popular there), and to last. There is no real room for experimenting with spices, the most exotic flavoring they use on a regular basis is sea salt from the Zora. They don't have the ability to keep exotic foods very much, those are for special occasions, and are expensive. There is some fruit, but mostly "fall" fruits. Labrynnans will often have some sort of meat roasting all day once a week, and then have various solid dishes made from the leftovers for the rest of the week. They use most everything.}

{Hmmm...
Nayru likes simple, comfy, filling food. Something good and hearty, like soup or a kind of meat-and-potatoes dish. She likes breads, too, and the occasional treat. But she likes to stick with the basics. A well prepared, simple dish (like...well, meat and mashed taters or something) is better than a mediocre complex meal (like something you'd find in a fancy Hylian cafe), in her eyes. It's the heart that's in the meal, not the ingredients!}

[As Oracle, Nayru is fairly religious. In Labrynna, they do believe in the Golden Goddesses, I feel like that is fairly consistent throughout the worlds (except Termina, but that's a different story), but those are more like...faint deities, they exist, but are more of a formality. Most in Labrynna pray to the Kolme (or the Fates) instead. These three individuals (they appear differently to different people) are just as they sound. Most Temples and houses of worship are centered around the Kolme, but will have a small shrine dedicated to the goddesses as well.
As I was saying, though, Nayru is fairly religious. She isn't going into raptures and wailing about it all the time or something, but she does put a lot of stock into it. She prays fairly often, and tries to leave small offerings, either at real shrines, or makeshift ones, at least once a week.]

Your muse hitting mine in the face with a snowball
Nayru crouched behind a small bush, smoothing out the the ball of snow between her gloves. Patience was needed now, he could step into her line of fire soon enough...
*smack*
Nayru felt the first snowball hit her in the shoulder, and as she turned to retaliate, the second one landed square on her cheek. Losing her balance, she flopped over onto her side, laughing and wiping the snow out of her eyes.
The salesman came jogging over, laughing himself. "Are you okay? That looked like it hit you a little harder than it should have!" She responded by scooping up a handful of snow and dumping it on his head.
