Harper nodded at Hebe because she understood that way of thinking. “Exactly, and why are we so sure that mermaids aren’t real when there is so much of the ocean that we haven’t seen? It seems like a dumb stance to me.” She added with a small shrug as it wasn’t as though they could know for certain. “I guess that is true. The system wants us to think that we can win so that we keep trying. But for the most part we are going to fail.” Harper added as she knew that it was impossible for everyone to win. It needed to be that way for society to continue to function the way that it currently was. “Adopting cats and living your best life isn’t the worst idea so you’ll be fine.” 

“OH, DEFINITELY. MERMAIDS ARE REAL. Maybe they live in the deepest part of the ocean. The part that us humans had never explored,” she quipped, nodding. Harper truly was an artist for having a wide imagination like her. “We can never win, so we might as well just live our lives and do what we want.” When she arrived to that conclusion. Hebe finally had the courage to run away from home, distancing herself from her controlling and overbearing parents. They already had an idea of what her life was going to be, but they never asked her what she wanted. “I know. I’ll be fine.” She chuckled in amusement imagining it. “What about you? Do you have anything in mind for your future?” she wondered.

          Was it selfish to steal her and have her all for himself for the weekend? Yes. Was he feeling bad for leaving kids with a babysitter? Also yes. But he couldn’t quite remember when was the last time they were alone - just the two of them. Will had booked them a nice little cabin just a little out of the city, up on a hill, overlooking the valley with the city being at their feet. The cabin had a romantic patio, where they could watch the fireworks from, and a hot tub.

          “I was told there are two baby goats living in the nearby farm and they like to sneak out and come chill here by this cabin. So, if you see them, don’t be alarmed,” he said with a small chuckle and closed the distance between them. His arms wrapped around her waist and he pulled her closer. “And also there are beautiful hiking trails and a watchtower, and so much more things to do. We could have a very active weekend, if you want to. Or we can just be lazy and enjoy each other’s company, make some pancakes or whatever you’re in the mood for,” he smiled and dipped down his head to give her a loving kiss.

DEMETER HAD IMMERSED HERSELF IN work. Her life had mostly revolved around her job and her kids. Things had changed with Will around. She had loosened up and learned how to have fun. He was slowly becoming a permanent fixture in her life. Or at least, she hoped he was. She never liked being vulnerable around people. However, he had a way of getting her guard down. It didn’t help how strongly attracted she was to him. 

        She had been hesitant to go on this little trip, but before she could even reason why she couldn’t, he already had everything sorted. It amazed her how he knew her well. The girls even encouraged her to go on this trip. He had hired a trustworthy sitter to look after them. “Baby goats. That’s cute. Don’t worry, they won’t scare me. I like animals.” They were surrounded by the lush greeneries. The cabin was perfect for a nature lover like herself. She smiled and looked up at him as he listed all the possible activities they could do. “Sounds like a plan.” The distance closed between them. She wrapped her arms around his neck, beaming at him. “We can settle on an activity, and then we can spend some time .  .  .  in bed.” She tilted her head up and met his lips, reveling in the loving kiss.

          Being on the run was a constant thing, one couldn’t take a break from it, there were no holidays or just a day off. Anya and Ares had to keep looking over their shoulders constantly. But finding a nice hiding spot out of everyone’s eyes did help a little. It was a cabin by a lake. Sure, there were more people living by it, Anya could see their houses in the far distance, but it was far enough to feel secluded.

          It was getting dark and Anya was gathering laundry, that she had hanged outside to dry, and putting it in a basket, when she noticed Ares` silhouette in the gazebo by the water. Instead of going inside to put the laundry down there, Anya went over to Ares, put the basket on a table and sat down next to him. She could hear some music and people laughing, talking and celebrating the Independence Day further near the lake, but those were faint sounds. “What was it that people say…” she wondered and looked at Ares, lips curving in a smile, “penny for your thoughts?”

ARES WAS USED TO LIVING this kind of life. Always on the run without a home. He had a target on his back, which only worsened when he failed a single mission to spare this woman he considered his best friend. A single mission that had gone wrong that he had to pay for. They couldn’t stay in one place for too long, ensuring they’d be untraceable. They always had to be sure. A single misstep could cost them their lives.

       He had just finished doing his job. Well, his regular job. He had to make a living. They needed the money for their necessities. Even though it was a holiday, he still had to do some work. The butcher shop had to be open for everyone to buy meat since it was a special occasion. It was packed with people, and with everything sold out quickly, he was able to clock out early. Despite that, it took him a while to get ‘home.’ He had gone to the city, which was an hour’s drive from the town, and bought some things to celebrate for the holiday. He earned enough to afford liquor. It was almost dark by the time he arrived. He watched as Anya did some chores, and went to the gazebo, sitting down by the body of water. He sensed her join him and glanced at her through his periphery. “Nothing much. Just thinking about the holiday,” he answered. “I bought us liquor and some meat we can grill.”

PERSONAL FEELINGS ASIDE, THEY’VE got a tricky mission to finish. Regardless of their history, it shouldn’t get in the way. Athena was competent with her job, rarely ever failing. However, there was a slight deterrence at the other’s presence. She never thought that they’d ever see each other again, let alone work together. The two of them had gone a long way back, until everything turned crap ( it was a bittersweet memory she didn’t want to look back on. ) For the finishing touch of her make-up, she swept the lipstick over her lips. Satisfied with the result, she turned to look at her partner, who seemed to be struggling in keeping their clothes in place. She took a step forward, and offered to do it for them. “Let me fix that for you.” Fingers daintily worked to pull at the zipper. Once she was finished, a look of satisfaction crossed her face. “We’re all set. It’s show-time. Buena suerte para nosotros.”
